Itinerary highlights

  • Beautiful stormy lights, blossoming flowers and large-scale animal migrations - an unforgettable off-season experience
  • Spend the night in the vast desert of Nxai Pan National Park and sleep among the winding stretches of water of the Okavango Delta
  • Meet giraffes and go on safaris on foot, by 4x4 and by canoe… it’s all planned out
  • Carbon absoption, mobile app, air taxi, Concierge service: the extra Voyageurs touch
Botswana - a vast, sparsely populated country that has set aside nearly one fifth of its territory for wildlife - is rarely crowded. The rules of extremely exclusive tourism, set by a responsible and committed government, are strict: No more than one traveller per 50 km² (19 square miles) of bush, desert, marsh, riverside forest or floodplain. Just imagine venturing to Botswana outside the peak tourist season. You will discover regions that are virtually devoid of people, vast expanses of unspoilt nature inhabited by incredible wild animals. This off-season, which runs from January to April during summer in the Southern Hemisphere, is poetically called the “green season”. It takes its name from the providential rains that fall - only occasionally, rest assured - on the usually hyper-arid lands of the Kalahari Desert. Watered once a year, the country is reborn from its ashes. The vegetation bursts forth in emerald bouquets. It is an unreal phenomenon, with the ground being carpeted with flowers. Birds take over the branches and the winding stretches of water of the Okavango Delta. Drawn to the water, the source of life, millions of zebras and wildebeest cross both the vast Nxai Pan salt desert and its neighbours, the Makgadikgadi Pans - the spectacle of this massive migration is unlike any other in the world. Daytime hours are hot, so you’ll likely want to make the most of the shade in the tents at your bush camps. In the evening, thunder rumbles in the distance, the crimson sunset lights up the metallic blue-grey clouds, and nature becomes incredibly photogenic…

Your Trip

This trip is full of contrasts, alternating between endless desert horizons and lush vegetation, with submerged areas that are teeming with life. Upon arrival, you’ll recover from a long night’s flight by spending your first night by the river, about 12 km (7.5 miles) from Maun, the gateway to Botswana. The view of the river from your comfortable tent is a promise of what awaits you on this trip. The next day, a short flight in an air taxi will take you to the middle of nowhere, in the heart of the vast, arid and salty expanse that was once a lake. Sleeping arrangements are in an intimate camp, ideally located in Nxai Pan National Park. With its dazzling chalky whiteness dotted with palm trees and ancient baobabs, during the green season it offers a spectacle that very few have the chance to witness: the great animal migration. On foot or in a 4x4, you will cross the endless plains of these marvellous lands, accompanied by experienced rangers. Then you will head north to the evocatively named delta, which looks like something straight out of an African tale: the Okavango Delta. A world apart from the Pans, this extremely fertile flooded region is made up of islands and islets, and countless stretches of water. During the green season, we promise you memorable shots of it all. In the evening around the fire, you’ll unwind and reflect on the day’s emotions. Your camp, emblematic of Botswana, is set up among the trees and blends perfectly into its surroundings. For three nights, you’ll soak up the smells, sounds and sensations that are so unique to the bush before returning to reality. Everywhere you go, you rely on nature to fill your days. In Maun, you will meet the giraffes in the reserve where you are staying, and in the Pans and the Okavango Delta, several safaris are organised every day - on foot, in a 4x4 or on the water. And for anything we can’t anticipate - be they sudden wishes or minor setbacks - you will have the contact details of our Concierge at your disposal throughout your trip.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Night on board, arrival the next day.

On arrival, personalised welcome at the airport by our local representative and transfer to your lodge. Settle in for one night at an intimate lodge set within a private reserve on the banks of the Thamalakane River, home to giraffes, zebras, ostriches and kudu. Your tent, raised on a wooden platform, opens onto a private terrace. At dusk, the setting sun blazes across the river and sky - a sight even more remarkable when clouds fill the sky. Snug and sheltered under your tent, you can sense that the African adventure is about to begin. It's a fantastic stopover, a chance to breathe before venturing deeper into Botswana’s wild landscapes.
In your itinerary - Giraffe observation walk. The reserve where your lodge is located is also lucky enough to be the permanent home of a group of about 20 giraffes, making sightings relatively easy, especially when they come to feed near the water. You are accompanied by expert naturalist guides, whose knowledge of these fascinating animals adds depth to the experience.

Transfer to Nxai Pan National Park, your first taste of safari. Check in for three nights at a wonderfully intimate camp: just six tents make up this minimalist camp, yet it provides everything you need for an unforgettable safari experience. Each tent provides a comfortable bedroom on a wooden platform, with en-suite bathroom and a small terrace for extending the wildlife viewing beyond the game drives. Two communal tents house the open-kitchen restaurant and a lounge for quiet moments between activities. Safaris are led by experienced rangers who combine careful attention to safety with an extraordinary ability to spot a flick of a tail, the edge of an ear or the faint imprint of a paw. Thanks to them, you discover a park that is home to species typical of both delta and desert ecosystems. Birdwatching excursions and visits to the famous Baines’ Baobabs are also possible.

This shimmering salt desert was formed by the drying up of a vast lake. Nxai Pan National Park, together with Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, covers around 995 sq miles (2,578 km²). Known for hosting some of the largest herds of wildebeest and zebra during the lush green season (outside the southern winter), Nxai Pan is also famed for its millennia-old baobabs, commonly known as Baines’ Baobabs after Thomas Baines, the British artist and adventurer who travelled through southern Africa and Australia in the 19th century.
In your itinerary - Each day is organised with the camp’s rangers according to your wishes: safaris - on foot or by 4x4 - of course, but also outings to observe birds or to visit the Baines’ Baobabs, as well as night drives. Mornings start early to avoid the worst of the heat. After a hearty brunch, the pace slows for a nap, a swim or time with a book in the lounge. Later, a snack or high tea restores energy before you head out again on safari, returning only as night falls. Evenings are for sharing impressions and favourite photos over dinner or around the campfire.

Transfer and flight to Maun. On the airstrip, a small bush plane is waiting to take off again and fly low over the delta’s winding channels towards your camp, sometimes landing en route to drop off other travellers before taking to the skies once more. It's always an enjoyable experience, especially when skimming close over herds of giraffe or elephant. More than just a transfer, this flight over the Okavango Delta is the best way to appreciate the topography of this vast watery expanse and one of the planet’s rarest ecosystems.
Check in for three nights at a traditional-style camp, an emblem of Botswana. Set in the heart of the delta’s wetlands within a private reserve, it blends seamlessly into its surroundings. Your tent is a charming cocoon built on stilts among the trees. Featuring precious woods, leather, porcelain, rugs and large mirrors, the décor skilfully balances historical charm with high-end comfort. The lodge overlooks floodplains where animals come to drink. As hippos, hyenas and elephants cool off in the water, you can do the same in the small swimming pool with a view. In the evening, before dinner, you can watch the setting sun reflected in the waterholes - which give the impression they're on fire. Later, everyone gathers around the campfire on the terrace to try to put into words what the day has held.

This region is one of the best preserved in Africa and is listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The labyrinth of channels, waterways and lagoons is a world unto itself. The light has a soft, velvety quality, sounds carry far, and the vegetation bursts into vivid colour here and there. Water sustains dense and diverse array of life: birds, reptiles and mammals, large and small, abound. In the green season, the light is warm and beautiful, life is everywhere, and birdlife is particularly rich.
In your itinerary - Daily safaris on foot, by 4x4, by boat or by mokoro canoe. These four complementary approaches to safari are all possible in this extraordinary meeting point of land and water.
Optional - Helicopter flight over the Okavango Delta.

From the window of the small bush plane carrying you to Maun airport, at the gateway to the delta, you can take a final look at this unforgettable corner of the world - a magical place that very few people will ever have the chance to experience. In Maun, you board your international flight home. Night on board, arrival the next day.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Fly Over the Delta by Helicopter

From your camp in the Okavango Delta, you’ll take off in a helicopter and fly at low altitudes over both the stretches of water and the bush. The sensation you get from this small, lightweight aircraft, with no side doors and fully glazed at the front, is positively dizzying. The wind rushes into the cabin as you lean over a family of giraffes, so close you could almost touch them. Depending on the animals you encounter, the pilot will gain or lose altitude, making for an exhilarating experience. Halfway through, you’ll land on a small, deserted islet. Pop the cork and toast your journey with champagne, lost in this wild natural setting.
Optional - Approx. 45-min scenic flight.
