Colonial Cities

Departure from La Paz, you will travel through the colonial cities of Bolivia. Sucre, a provincial capital and very scenic colonial city that has preserved most of its 16th-century buildings, and Potosi, with its exceptionally rich colonial heritage, a former imperial city during the reign of Charles V. You can visit a still-operating mine at Cerro Rico, Maria del Carmen. Every Sunday, the indigenous market of Tarabuco is held. The locals sometimes play the charango there, and you will come across indigenous women in very colourful costumes, with their many skirts and bowler hats. The men’s hat is reminiscent of the conquistador helmet.

La Paz & surroundings

La Paz is unique in that it is built on a 1 km (0.6 miles) elevation difference, ranging from 3,200 to 4,200 metres (10,498 - 13,779 feet) above sea level. There’s no point hiding it: nothing here is quite the same as anywhere else. A particular fervour regularly grips this indigenous land, which is constantly stirring to assert its rights. To make the most of your stay in La Paz, start with the old colonial city, its squares and palaces, then take a stroll through its indigenous markets. On the way to Lake Titicaca, the pre-Inca site of Tiahuanaco and its Puerta del Sol are absolute must-sees. In the heart of Lake Titicaca, Copacabana is an important pilgrimage centre in Bolivia, where the “Virgen Morena de Copacabana” is venerated. You can even have your car blessed there on Sundays…

Salar de Uyuni

In the far south of Bolivia lies a breathtaking landscape: an immense salt flat 45 metres thick and covering 12,000 km² (4,633 square miles), at an altitude of 4,000 metres (13,123 feet) – the Uyuni Salt Flat. These white deserts, dotted with giant cacti, shimmer with unreal colours. A unique spectacle of 200°C geysers, blazing lagoons and deep blue skies. Your journey across the Uyuni Salt Flat will offer you unique sensations, mirages and optical illusions, all created by the radiation and other surprising phenomena. The South Lipez region is made up of virgin islands and deserts sheltering giant cacti and unusual blooms. A succession of natural landscapes and whimsical shapes, it captivates and enchants the visitor.
