Itinerary highlights

  • From Munich to Salzburg, via Garmisch and Tyrol, journey through iconic Alpine regions.
  • Drive through glorious landscapes, then take in the panorama from your room’s balcony.
  • Spa treatment, electric bikes, Innsbruck funicular, a popular tour of Salzburg - it's all planned!
  • Train or plane, mobile app & GPS, our recommendations, Concierge service, the Voyageurs' service
More than two countries, experience the Alpine environment. From Munich, which is easily accessible by train or plane (or even with your own car if you wish), there are excellent connections to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is overlooked by the Zugspitze at 2,962 metres (9,718 feet), the highest peak in the country. Home to Maria Riesch and Felix Neureuther, among others, the resort has truly earned its place in German skiing. It is also pleasant in every season and boasts a fine artistic heritage. Louis II built a royal chalet there, das Königshaus am Schachen, and Neuschwanstein Castle is not far away, on the other side of the Ammergebirge. You may not be very familiar with Alpbach in Tyrol. But it is one of the most beautiful villages in Austria, if not the most beautiful. You’ll stay a valley straight out of a dream, where the locals have skilfully embraced the modern world without disturbing the Alpine ideal. And then there is Salzbourg, which does not live off of the memory of Mozart alone. Where the plains meet the mountains, on the banks of the Salzach river, it has enjoyed an advantageous position since at least the Neolithic era and built up a first-rate heritage. Always lively, it also captivates with its dynamism, elegance and an art of living that is more than just marketing. You feel at ease there, and when you leave, all you want is to return. Which makes it the perfect way to end a charming itinerary.

Your journey

To travel over hills and vales, the car is still the best solution. A vehicle has therefore been reserved for you, allowing you to travel comfortably between your stop-offs and, once on site, giving you greater freedom of movement. Because there is so much to see, and just as much to do. And if you wished to set off behind the wheel of your own car, that would be entirely possible. As for hotels, there are two aspects to the chalet: modern in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, traditional in Alpbach. But twice the cosy atmosphere that Alpine homes hold the secret to. Then you get a dose of urban charm in Salzburg. We have added a few appointments to your agenda. You can begin with a spa treatment at your hotel in Garmisch. Your well-being is part of the journey. There’s also a ticket for the spectacular Innsbruck funicular railway. In Alpbach, hiking is made easy with electric bicycles and picnic baskets. Tyrol awaits! Finally, a private guide makes the wonders of Salzburg familiar and accessible. This is designed to help you get started, and then your explorations will organise themselves. And if an unexpected whim or setback arises along the way, you have the contact details of our on-site Concierge service.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Pick up your car rental and head to Garmisch, where you’ll spend three nights up in the hills. Park nearby, then take the cable car to your hotel in a spacious contemporary chalet with breathtaking mountain views from the bay windows, terraces and balcony. The interior layout and decor are bright, crisp, modern - and comfortable too. In your own private residence, you’ll be living in the lap of luxury. The estate’s well-designed wellness area is the ideal place to take some time to recharge. Would you like a thorough fitness assessment? Certified practitioners offer a holistic assessment. Meanwhile, the restaurants serve simple yet delicious cuisine made from local ingredients.

When the Roman road Via Claudia Augusta passed through here, houses sprang up along its sides, marking the beginnings of what would become Partenkirchen. Today, Ludwigstrasse still follows the route of the ancient road. In Garmisch, the old Saint Martin Church preserves remarkable wall paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries, including a larger-than-life figure of Saint Christopher. The new Saint Martin Church, built in 1730-1734, features Rococo decor that reflects the evolving artistic tastes of the time. The ruins of Werdenfels Castle recall the harsh era of witch trials. And in the Olympic Park, the towering ski jump soars upwards like a steeple. Just south of the resort, lies the magnificent landscape of the Wetterstein Mountains, including the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak. It’s also where you’ll find the Schachen Chalet, built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria between 1869 and 1872. This Swiss-inspired villa with a theatrical aesthetic, is built from arolla pine.
Already included - a spa treatment at the hotel. A pleasant experience in a pleasant setting!

You can continue the tour of Ludwig II’s extravagances at Neuschwanstein Castle, near Füssen. This edifice was commissioned by the king, designed by architect Eduard Riedel, and decorated by Christian Jank. Beyond its undisputed grandeur, what is striking about the building today is its modernity, combining romantic eclecticism with historicism and state-of-the-art technology. In fact, he was so far ahead of his time in re-imaging medieval architecture for the industrial age, he inspired Herbert Ryman to create Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle in 1954. Today, Neuschwanstein Castle still speaks to us. Below, you can see Hohenschwangau Castle, with origins dating back to the 14th century, although it was completely redesigned in the troubadour style in the 19th century. While less ambitious than the edifice above, it was still a departure point for Louis II. Also heading upwards, a cogwheel train from Garmisch or a cable car from Eibsee take you to the summit of the Zugspitze.

Already included in your itinerary - the Hungerburgbahn. Passing through Innsbruck is the ideal opportunity to take the new funicular connecting the city centre with the Hungerburg district, 860 metres (2,820 feet) above sea level and surrounded by nature. The four funicular stations were designed by deconstructivist architect Zaha Hadid. She also designed the Bergisel ski jump, south of Innsbruck.
Continue on to Alpbach, in the Kitzbühel Alps. Stay for three nights in a large, traditional-style chalet with wooden balconies offering views of the mountains. Inside, there are wood and other beautiful natural materials throughout, in shades of brown, beige, ecru and grey. The ambiance is a pleasing balance between contemporary simplicity and Alpine warmth. The apartment includes a bedroom, living and dining area, fully equipped kitchen and spotless bathroom. Premium comfort is guaranteed, with access to a sauna included.

This village was not connected to the road network until 1926. It has been recognised for its pure air, beautiful architecture and vibrant floral displays - balconies overflow with geraniums, and even the cemetery resembles a garden. Here, Tyrol is superlative. Summer is for hiking, while winter is for skiing. These conditions lead to a simple life, close to nature. In the surrounding valley, farmers continue to earn their living from the land (you can learn about the lives of their predecessors at Vorder-Unterberg Farm Museum, built in the 17th century).
Already included - half-day electric bike hire with a picnic hamper. Once you’re in the saddle, set off without worrying about hills or slopes. And the picnic will replace the calories you’ve burned along the way. This is intended to be a leisurely ride, not a cycle race!

Drive to Salzburg and stay two nights in the Old Town. Behind the hotel, there is a very pretty garden - a delightful hideaway on sunny days. The interior decor is a blend of light classicism and relaxed design in a pleasing palette of colours: blue, mauve and rust, set against plenty of white. The technical features are faultless, so you can slip right in and feel happy to be here. Breakfast and a bar are available on site and a few steps through the pedestrian zone will take you to a restaurant. For an invigorating session in the sauna or hammam, or for a morning yoga class, you don’t even need to leave the hotel.

Already included - Private guided tour of Salzburg and Mozart's Birthplace Although guide books are provided, spending three hours with our local guide, who knows the city and language inside out, promises you a more meaningful visit. From the Capuchin Monastery (built from 1596 and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to Red Bull Hangar 7 (where businessman Dietrich Mateschitz’s collection of aircraft and cars is on display) - not forgetting Mozart’s Birthplace (Getreidegasse 9) and Holy Trinity Church (designed by Fischer von Erlach and built 1694-1702) - this is an itinerary infused with Austrian spirit.

Drive back to Munich and return the hire car. Return trip.
