It is named after an imaginary line that divides the world in two. Yet everything you experience during a trip to Ecuador is as real as it comes. From the perfect cone of the immense Cotopaxi volcano to the golden sands of Pacific coast, from the colonial heritage of Quito to the vibrant wildlife of the Amazon, Ecuador is quite literally elevated, but also deeply grounded. You face a nature that is raw and generous here, that gives and asks for nothing in return. And then there are the Galápagos – a dream archipelago where volcanic landscapes meet extraordinary marine life. Ecuador is a world in itself.

Travel to Ecuador by region

Ecuadorian Amazon

This equatorial forest, which in South America stretches over 6 million km² (2.3 million square miles) and 9 countries including Ecuador, represents more than half of the planet’s tropical forests; its ecosystem is extremely rich and varied. During your stay in the Amazon, you will travel by canoe on the Napo River, in the heart of the humid forest. Walking tours, encounters with indigenous communities, discovery of local wildlife and flora. The lodges are set along the river and sometimes on isolated islands whose outlines sometimes vanish in the morning mist. Comfortable and well blended into their surroundings, the Amazonian lodges are deeply committed to an eco-friendly and ethnically-sensitive approach.

Galápagos Islands

The “enchanted islands” are located 1,000 km (620 miles) off the Pacific coast of Ecuador and were discovered in 1535. It was with the visit of the English naturalist Charles Darwin, and his theory of the “evolution of species”, which he formulated following his research on these islands, that the world would come to know the Galapagos. These comprise 19 islands and around 40 islets that remained untouched by humans until the 16th century. Who hasn’t dreamt of going to see the legendary iguanas, blue- or red-footed boobies, frigatebirds, albatrosses and giant tortoises. A trip to the Galapagos Islands can extend a journey in Ecuador, or be a journey in itself, staying from island to island.

The Sierra & the Andes

Ecuador has the largest number of active volcanoes and some of the highest in the world, such as Cotopaxi (5,897 metres or 19,347 feet) and Chimborazo (6,310 metres or 20,564 feet). A trip to the Sierra involves high altitudes – Quito is situated at 2,850 metres (9,350 feet), and in Cotopaxi National Park, you’ll climb up to 4,000 metres (13,120 feet). A pleasant stay in the historical heart of Quito, which forms a major architectural ensemble. Baroque is elevated here in the stone of its hundreds of churches and palaces. Thanks to its unique latitude, 0°0'00'', it is possible to observe all the constellations in the sky from there. You must get lost in the indigenous market of Otavalo and spend some time in Cuenca, a beautiful colonial city especially renowned for making “paja toquilla” hats, commonly known as Panama hats.
