The “enchanted islands” are located 1,000 km (620 miles) off the Pacific coast of Ecuador and were discovered in 1535. It was with the visit of the English naturalist Charles Darwin, and his theory of the “evolution of species”, which he formulated following his research on these islands, that the world would come to know the Galapagos. These comprise 19 islands and around 40 islets that remained untouched by humans until the 16th century. Who hasn’t dreamt of going to see the legendary iguanas, blue- or red-footed boobies, frigatebirds, albatrosses and giant tortoises. A trip to the Galapagos Islands can extend a journey in Ecuador, or be a journey in itself, staying from island to island.
