Technically it is France, yet setting off for a trip to New Caledonia, you couldn’t be further from Europe. A few surface signs remain, the flag, the framed portrait of the President, but French Caledonia has certainly soaked up the sun. Its translucent lagoons overflow with light, its nature is vivid, its melodious language sings. You arrive as “Zoreilles”, newly landed mainlanders, generally recognisable by our paler complexion, a telltale sign of a climate far less pleasant than here!

Travel to New Caledonia by region

Grande Terre

A true little country in itself, Grande Terre may be a single island, but it is undeniably plural. On either side of its mountain range, different climates, landscapes and atmospheres unfold… Sometimes, you even feel as if you are no longer in New Caledonia! For example, when facing the stockmen, those cowboys of a surprising Caledonian Wild West, in the black rock valleys of the east, or at the colourful stalls of the Noumea market. But travelling to Grande Terre also means enjoying the pleasure of ticking off certain boxes: crystal-clear lagoons, tropical forests and idyllic beaches. And above all, soaking up the gentle way of life at the ends of the earth.

Isle of Pines

If earthly paradise exists, it looks just like this little piece of land in the south of New Caledonia, as alike as two drops of lagoon water. A journey to the Isle of Pines leaves a lasting impression on the traveller. First, with its slender columnar pines – like bursts of green fireworks against an azure sky. With its beaches and bays, surely among the most aesthetic in the world.

Lifou Island

Travelling on Lifou Island means exploring the largest of the Loyalty Islands. An archipelago within the archipelago that reveals itself through its beaches and bays. Inside this ancient coral atoll lies a vast plain overrun by forest. To the north and south, cliffs punctuated with caves run down to the sea, while to the east and west, several paradise beaches stretch out. An island of light with untamed charm and fiercely protected traditions.

Ouvéa Island

The northernmost atoll of the Loyalty Islands archipelago is undoubtedly one of the jewels of the Pacific. UNESCO made no mistake in listing its crystal-clear waters as a World Heritage site. A journey to Ouvéa Island, a slender strip of land bordered by white sand, fulfils every promise of a tropical postcard, from the cliffs of Lékiny to the villages inhabited by Polynesian and Melanesian people.
