Ephemeral camp, icebergs and midnight sun A summer at the edge of Greenland

While everyone can accord whatever meaning they wish to the idea of a change of scenery - and, depending on their preferences, associate it with certain destinations rather than others - here is a change of scenery that should appeal to everyone. Because this extraordinary journey does not “simply” take you to Greenland - it leads you into the depths of Greenland, where nothing resembles what you know. But before that, we spend a little time in Copenhagen to get into the Nordic style and embrace the codes of hygge, the Danish art of well-being which, despite the change of scenery, will accompany you throughout your journey. An example of this can be found in Nuuk, the Greenlandic capital, which you reach in no time by plane. Despite its isolation in the heart of the fjords, this city reveals an increasingly vibrant cultural, culinary and artistic life. Here, you gently immerse yourself in the national culture, beautifully embodied by the tradition of kaffemik - coffee as a pretext for a warm gathering, often in large groups, to celebrate life’s major milestones. However, Greenland cannot be summed up by the city; in fact, it is quite the opposite. It is time to go and listen to the country’s wild heartbeat. There’s no need to cross it entirely to do so; less than two hours by zodiac are enough to take you away from any form of civilisation. Disembark in the heart of the world’s second largest fjord system. This is where, nestled against the oldest mountains in the world, the tipis of an ephemeral camp are set up - only to be taken down again at the end of the summer. Here you experience “glamping” in the truest sense of the word: a breathtaking natural environment, light facilities that disturb it as little as possible, and all the comfort you need so you won’t miss being in a hotel. You wake up each morning facing icebergs floating on the water, ready to explore a landscape trodden only by a privileged few. With a maximum of around ten guests, each experience at the camp is customised, thanks in particular to the invaluable presence of knowledgeable guides and hosts. They will take you to explore nearby villages or the surrounding area by boat or kayak, on foot, fish with your bare hands, and pick mushrooms, herbs, and wild berries. You can also enjoy the “invigorating” experience of Arctic swimming. A sauna, hot tub or reading bring the day to a gentle close. Then, after dinner, huddle around the campfire, waiting in vain for the sun to set. The midnight night sun is no myth.

Your camp in Greenland

In the heart of Greenland’s wilderness, a small tipi camp is set up each June. Only about ten guests at a time enjoy a glamping experience here, where uniqueness lies both in the raw, incredibly pristine environment of this part of Greenland and in the high level of comfort. Your spacious tent (22 m² [237 sq ft]), truly has little (if anything) to envy in a hotel room: XXL bed, thick duvets, heated blankets… There’s even hot water in the private bathroom! At the end of the day, after amazing Arctic wanderings, you return to your cosy tipi and its soft rugs, read a book facing the fjord, or head to the sauna or hot tub to experience that unique sensation of having a warm body and a cold nose at the same time. At mealtimes, guests take a seat under a large tent where a chef prepares a new menu every day. Disconnection here is meant both literally and figuratively: there are few or no other people, and there is also little or no phone signal or internet access. 

Your journey

Finding yourself at the end of the world is not always… the end of the world. In this case, all it takes is a quick (and direct) flight to Copenhagen and another to Nuuk. You don’t do it all in one go; you take the time to (re)discover the Danish capital, to fall for its celebrated design, atmosphere and cuisine. Especially as you stay in the central and lively Vesterbro district, from where it is easy to explore the city. Your hotel is urban, elegant, and crowned with a delightful rooftop - perfect for the end of the day. The one in Nuuk is more classic but perfectly equipped, and guarantees superb views of the fjord. And you spend the last night of your trip in a comfortable and functional hotel close to the airport. Your itinerary features activities in tune with each environment: the very local experience of a kaffemik at the home of a Nuuk resident, and all sorts of explorations departing from your temporary camp - kayaking or boating excursions, foraging, swimming in a dry suit, hiking, bare-handed fishing… As for anything we cannot anticipate - minor setbacks or sudden wishes - you can rely on the assistance of our Concierge throughout your trip.
