Itinerary highlights

  • Transitioning from one Nordic world to another, from the wild and timeless scenery of the Faroe Islands to the cosmopolitan energy of Copenhagen.
  • The locavore (and gourmet) wind that shapes your journey, with trendy restaurants, new Scandinavian cuisine and local products.
  • Exploring the Faroese Golden Circle and the island of Vágar in private, experiencing Copenhagen as a local, the spas… it’s all arranged!
  • Direct flights, private transfers, guides, Concierge service: the extra Voyageurs du Monde touch.
It feels like Scotland, it feels like Ireland, it feels like Iceland. A little less so like Denmark. Yet the Atlantic archipelago of the Faroe Islands belongs to the Danish Crown - eighteen islands of a raw beauty, on which there are more sheep than humans. Nature, entire and rugged, is a companion in both life and travel here. Impetuous, it is often the one to set the agenda. People adapt, moved by the beauty of this green carpet covering almost everything, the mystique of the wind’s song as it rushes through the gorges, and the ingenuousness of the colourful houses with grassy roofs. And when the thick fog, or kjaftsvart í mjorka, lifts to let a ray of sunshine through, it shines on these small lands - Strymoy,Streymoy, Eysturoy, Vágar and the others - their fjords, lakes, waterfalls and villages, with a light that is clearer than anywhere else. It is inspiring: to the artists and craftsfolk who exhibit in the world’s smallest capital, Tórshavn, with their thoughtful creations; and to the chefs, too, attracting Michelin stars and visitors with discerning palates. On reflection, the Faroe Islands are beyond compare.

Copenhagen as an epilogue

Going from the Faroe Islands to Copenhagen is a big leap in terms of context and fashion. The Danish capital, though still on a human scale and ever devoted to herring fishing, has caught the fever for design, street art, and hygge. It stretches along its canals and polychrome facades, with a cosmopolitan atmosphere, trendy boutiques, and restaurants that, for several years now, have been working wonders with what grows, grazes and swims in the surrounding area. The Designmuseum and Christiansborg Palace, the creative Meatpacking District and the trendy Nørrebro, the monarchy and the alternative community of Christiania: Danish eclecticism has many virtues, both aesthetic and cultural.

Your journey

Scandinavia (including the islands) is just a quick and direct flightaway. You land on the island of Vágar; all that remains is to reach the Faroese capital, your home base, from where you will easily set out to explore the rest of the archipelago. The journey - like all your other journeys - is made easier by private transfer. Perched on the city’s heights, your modern hotel plays with illusions among the verdant hills thanks to a skilfully crafted grass roof, a local speciality. Located on the sea side, your room opens onto superb panoramic views that change over the course of the day. In the restaurant, the tasting menu brings a great deal of talent and a little of each island in the archipelago to your plate. Brilliant. Afternoon tea, sauna and massages complete the experience. An art-inspired hotel. You are also well served in Copenhagen’s former central post office, a 1912 building cleverly transformed into a hotel and one of the few in the city to have a swimming pool. The Crown does not have the monopoly on privilege. On site, in addition to a faultlessly comfortable room, the rooftop, zero-waste kitchen and spa help you recharge both body and mind between outings. Some highlights must simply not be missed and are already on your itinerary: in the Faroe Islands, a day spent exploring the villages of Saksun and Gjógv offers the opportunity to discover the local Golden Circle; another is dedicated to the gorgeous island of Vágar. In Copenhagen, you wander the city in the company of a local who adapts to your wishes. Your spa access is arranged at every location so you can make the sauna part of your daily routine. As for the new Nordic cuisine, (re)discover it in one of the trendy restaurants in the Danish capital, where we have reserved you a table. Additional reservations, tours, and meetings can be arranged by our on-site Concierge. In collaboration with your travel specialist, they can indeed adjust your journey according to your wishes, even as it unfolds.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Upon arrival, private transfer to Tórshavn and stay for four nights at a hotel perched on the hillside above the capital. The modern building blends surprisingly well into its natural surroundings thanks to a grass covered roof that looks just like part of the rolling green hills. The facade overlooking the city and the sea below is fully glazed. Your room on this side of the hotel looks out onto superb views that change as the day goes on. Inside, it is contemporary, bright, and simple in style, with exposed concrete, natural colours and modern furnishings. The hotel's sophisticated restaurant works wonders with local and seasonal ingredients. The tasting menu is a wonderful indication of the talent at work in the kitchen. All the dishes are presented creatively like true works of art. You can also soak up the warm atmosphere of the cafe and enjoy a light meal or a 21st-century take on afternoon tea. Unless you’re already at the spa that is, having a massage, or detoxing in the sauna.

On your schedule - Tórshavn  electric bike tour. Spend a few hours cycling through the streets of the world’s smallest capital, on a private tour with a guide, admiring its charming, colourful houses. Reyni, the old town, is a good place to learn about the town and the islands’ history, against a backdrop of cobbled streets, ancient churches and wooden buildings with grass roofs. Cycling for around 15 km (9 miles), you will see the main attractions and visit the most beautiful viewpoints in the area. At the end of your journey, step into one of the seafood restaurants for a typical Faroese lunch.
In the afternoon, head to your hotel’s spa (entry is included), a brand-new addition and one of the best in the Faroes. It has a swimming pool, a sauna, steam baths, ice baths and hot tubs. It’s a true sanctuary of peace and wellness, where guests can enjoy expert treatments and massages.

On your schedule - A day in the wild Golden Circle. Head to the north of the island with a guide. The first stop is the  village of Saksun, a secluded hamlet surrounded by dramatic mountains covered with a carpet of vivid green. Along the way, you pass Hvalvík, the oldest whaling station in the Faroes. Before crossing to the neighbouring island of Eysturoy, take a short detour to see the beautiful Fossá waterfall. Then drive to the northernmost village of Gjógv. The natural harbour, which forms a narrow gorge, is framed by high cliffs, and has a magnificent view of the Risin og Kellingin ("the Giant and the Witch") sea stacks. The village cafe couldn’t be more local, and you can enjoy a homemade lunch there before heading back to Tórshavn, passing by Slættaratindur, the highest point in the Faroe Islands (882 metres (2,887 feet) above sea level).

Still with your guide, you head to Vágar and its breathtaking landscapes. The spectacular fjords, the rugged coastline and the majestic mountains are stunning. Along the way, you visit Trælanípa, Gásadalur and Trollkonufingur, Lake Sørvágsvatn and the small village of Bøur. The picture perfect Múlafossur Waterfall is also a must see.
Optional extras - Helicopter flight over Vágar; dinner at one of the best restaurants in Tórshavn.

Private transfer to the airport and flight to Copenhagen, where you stay for three nights. Your hotel is housed in a historic building dating back to 1912, the former central post office of Copenhagen. Meticulously designed by London-based practice Universal Design Studio, the property now features sophisticated rooms and a wide range of amenities. It is one of the only hotels in the city with a swimming pool on the top floor. There is also a spa and a sauna, to restore both the body and the mind. As for dining options, take your pick from the Danish bakery, the wine bar or the Scandinavian brasserie. The chef embraces contemporary values such as zero waste and seasonal cooking.
On your schedule for the evening - Dinner in an excellent restaurant and wine bar in the centre of Copenhagen - your table is reserved.

On your schedule - Copenhagen with a local. Explore the city with a local who knows the Danish capital like the back of their hand, discovering it on foot and at your own pace. During this meandering stroll, immerse yourself in the urban atmosphere, find out about the Danish lifestyle, and chat about life in Copenhagen. On the way, you might come across the cool neighbourhoods of Vesterbro and Nansensgade, chic Frederiksberg, the creative Meatpacking District, alternative Christiania or The Lakes. All around are endless cycle paths, the gentle lapping of canals, designer boutiques and wonderful restaurants serving the best of Scandinavian cuisine, both new and traditional.
In the evening, head to your hotel’s spa, where a sustainably heated outdoor pool, a sauna and a bar with views of the city rooftops await you.

Things to see and do - Stroll along the Nyhavn quays or wander through the botanical garden, with its 19th century greenhouses - admire the street art in Christiania - explore the collections of the remarkable Designmuseum Danmark - admire the Parliament building at Christiansborg - shop for homewares in Vesterbro.

Transfer to the airport and return flight.
