Itinerary highlights

  • A “short” trip that's not so short, to a land at the end of the world that is nevertheless easily accessible
  • Waterfalls and green hills, puffins and penguins: an archipelago with magnificent nature
  • Guided exploration of the island of Mykines; the unique experience of Heimablídni... it's all planned!
  • Direct flights, rental car and customised GPS app, Concierge service: travel with Voyageurs
They float mysteriously between Norway, Scotland and Iceland. Between the somewhat clichéd image we have of rural Scandinavia and the complete unknown. The Faroe Islands. It’s difficult to know what to expect. Greenery? We’d be right. Mist, perhaps? Often. Rarely will you encounter such raw, unspoiled beauty, present absolutely everywhere. To familiarise yourself with these volcanic islands, simply follow the thousands of sheep that roam, wool blowing in the wind, across Streymoy, Vágar, Sandoy, Eysturoy, Bordoy and the other islands. Islands linked together by ferries and land routes. Islands that resemble each other without becoming tiresome, each displaying a unique feature for tourists to admire: a fjord, an old whaling station, a waterfall, a grassy plain undulating in the breeze to stunning cliffs where small hamlets with thatched roofs sit casually. Sharing is a tradition, known as Heimablídni. The Faroese Islands are generous and can easily be explored in a few days, without rushing. Two nights on the island of Vágar, then two more in Tórshavn, on the island of Streymoy, are enough to get a feel for the place. This is where you can experience Scandinavian crime fiction in its purest form. The investigation, full of twists and turns, takes those conducting it on the trail of Vikings, puffins, fishermen and the Faroese people, who are renowned for their hospitality.

Your trip

We now know that a change of scenery is not proportional to the number of miles travelled. The Faroe Islands, which can be reached by direct and fast flights, are perhaps one of the most powerful illustrations of this. Once there, a rental car and a GPS app give tourists the freedom they need to explore these wild lands at their own pace and to hop from one island to another, if they wish. Your accommodation, perfectly integrated into its surroundings and not rustic in the slightest, guarantees constant contact with nature. On the island of Vágar, you will stay in a discreet wooden cottage with a traditional grass roof. Inside, you'll find wood, a fully equipped kitchen and comfortable seating, a delightful invitation to recharge your batteries before walking to one of the archipelago's landmarks: the Múlafossur waterfall. In the capital, Tórshavn, you will reconnect with the sea, which is separated from the hotel only by a pretty garden. The sea view changes with the moods of the weather and the light. You can admire it from the comfort of the cosy interiors with their elegant parquet flooring and furniture, the perfect setting for enjoying afternoon tea. Although the walks alone set the pace for the days, we have made a point of organising a few outings for you. First of all, we have set aside some time for you to explore Mykines Island, a paradise for guillemots, fulmars and other little auks, with an experienced guide. Secondly, we have organised for you to spend an evening with generous Faroese hosts - the famous Heimablídni - under the banner of exchange. Many other experiences can be added to your itinerary. To do so, or to deal with any unforeseen circumstances, you will have the contact details of our on-site Concierge. Along with your travel specialist, they can also tailor your trip to your wishes as it unfolds.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Direct flight to the Faroe Islands. Upon arrival, pick up your rental car and drive to Vágar, where you will stay for two nights. Your hotel consists of a few discreet wooden cottages. Topped with traditional grass roofs, they almost disappear into their surroundings, yet still have all modern comforts. Inside, there is more wood, a fully equipped kitchen and soft seating, perfect for recharging your batteries. After a quick rest, set out on foot to discover some of the natural wonders of the wild Faroe Islands, along with the birds, sheep and Highland cows, your enthusiastic neighbours.

You have a full day to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Vágar at your own pace. Enough time to appreciate the spectacular fjords, rugged coastline and majestic mountains. Be sure to visit Trælanípa, Gásadalur and Trøllkonufingur, Lake Sørvágsvatn and the small village of Bøur. The picture perfect Múlafossur Waterfall is also a must see.
With a guide, you then head to Mykines, a small island famous for its bird colonies. This westernmost island is home to thousands of seabirds. Puffins, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars and gannets all live peacefully alongside nearly a thousand sheep. You can see why these remarkable winged creatures chose this island as their home. Nature here is incredibly well preserved, creating an equally rich and fragile ecosystem. You instinctively know not to disturb anything.
Optional extra -Boat trip around Vágar.

Drive to Streymoy. Along the way, explore the Golden Circle at your own pace, and, in the north of the island, the village of Saksun, a secluded hamlet surrounded by dramatic mountains covered with a carpet of vivid green. Pass by Hvalvík too, the oldest whaling station in the Faroes. Then drive to the northernmost village of Gjógv. The natural harbour, which forms a narrow gorge, is framed by high cliffs, and has a magnificent view of the Risin og Kellingin ("the Giant and the Witch") sea stacks. The village cafe couldn’t be more local, and you can enjoy a homemade lunch there before heading to Tórshavn, where you stay for two nights. There are many good things about your accommodation, but the best one is the view. You’ll see what we mean. The hotel sits right on the sea, separated only by a garden from the water. Many of the rooms look out onto the seascape, which constantly shifts with the changing weather and light. Your stay here will be comfortable, in cosy and bright interiors, featuring shades of white and blue, directly inspired by the fjord. It’s a long way from the kitsch often found in seaside homes. Beautiful parquet floors, elegant furniture and warm wood come together here in perfect harmony. After a walk in the fresh air, take refuge in the adjoining cafe to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea.

Tórshavn is a picturesque old town on the coast with an abundance of traditional colourful houses, cobbled streets, old churches and grass-roofed buildings. One of the smallest capitals in the world, its attractions are a good way to learn about the archipelago’s history. Tinganes, the seat of the Faroese Parliament, dates back to the Vikings and is still in use today. The Nordic House is an architectural gem and a popular cultural centre. The National Museum of the Faroe Islands, and the cathedral are also worth visiting.
Not to be missed - The village of Kirkjubøur, just a few kilometres from Tórshavn, was once the religious and cultural centre of the Faroes. It is home to the oldest wooden house in Europe and the oldest wooden church in the archipelago, opened in 1250 and still in use today. Near the ruins of St Magnus Cathedral, which dates from the 14th century, a runestone from the Viking Age was discovered in 1832. Kirkjubøur is also in a stunning location with sweeping views of the sea and the neighbouring islands.
On your schedule for the evening - Dinner with locals, or Heimablídni, , which literally means "home hospitality". Locals welcome you into their homes for a traditional Faroese home-cooked meal. You can chat together, share a slice of life and get a true sense of Faroese culture.

Drive to the airport, return the rental car and direct flight home.
