100% customisable travel idea
Chile - Santiago - Bolivia - Uyuni - Atacama - Valparaiso
100% customisable for you
Night on board, arrival the next day.
Private transfer to central Santiago.
In your itinerary - Santiago like a local. Don’t be fooled by the sometimes austere look of Santiago’s city centre. The atmosphere couldn't be more different - just as the locals push a painful past aside with a huge dose of celebration and energy. You’ll see this first-hand as you explore with a knowledgeable guide, passionate about Latin America and Chile, who shares cultural and historical insights. It’s an informal walk, with an itinerary you shape together: wander around Plaza de la Ciudadanía, the colonial centre, or in the lively Providencia neighbourhood; step inside La Chascona, Pablo Neruda’s former home; try several empanada spots; or simply pause at a café terrace to chat about local life. In any event, don’t hesitate to ask questions and gather valuable advice for the rest of your stay.
Settle in for the night at a hotel in the popular Bellavista district, in the heart of the capital. Built in 1929, this former family residence bears witness to a rich past and is listed as part of the city’s historic heritage. The owners have preserved elements of the original architecture, including stained glass, a bronze counter, chequerboard floors and marble staircases. Elsewhere in the property, you'll find designer lighting and fashionable furniture, resulting in a contemporary feel with a design-hotel vibe. Chilean artists have contributed successfully to the graphic décor. Guest rooms are a bit more understated and, above all, very comfortable.
Private transfer to the airport and flight to Calama. Another private transfer to San Pedro de Atacama and a four-night stay at a welcoming hotel with an adobe-brick façade - the terracotta-coloured earth characteristic of desert dwellings. This warm terracotta hue, combined with exposed stone, blends beautifully into the surrounding landscape. The rooms are modern and understated. Elsewhere, the hotel shows more personality, using baskets and wooden or wicker furniture. All spaces open onto the outdoors. At the end of the day, relax by the pool or enjoy a drink on one of the shaded terraces.
The Atacama Desert is among the world’s most absolute; the dryness of the air makes the sky exceptionally clear. San Pedro feels like an oasis. Its adobe-brick church is one of the country’s oldest (17th century). Over the four days, visit the Museo Arqueológico R.P. Gustavo Le Paige, which offers a very complete portrait of the ingenious Atacama civilisation. The pre-Columbian sites of Quitor and Tulor naturally complement the museum.
Already included - Begin by sharing a friendly conversation - and a drink - with your dedicated guide who knows the area like the back of their hand. They’ll take time to introduce you to the desert, advise on what not to miss, answer all your questions and share key information so you can explore this wild expanse with complete peace of mind.
You have three days to enjoy the Atacama’s wonders, a world of silence nestled in the heart of the Andes. With your hire car, explore independently and at your own pace. The desert promises many awe-inspiring sights, but of all them, the Valle de la Luna is not to be missed. The lunar-like landscape features strange rock formations and dunes, sculpted by thousands of years of erosion by water and wind. You can also hike the Guatin gorges in the cactus valley to reach Puritama Hot Springs, at an altitude of over 11,000 feet (3,400 metres). Known for centuries, they owe their benefits to the naturally hot water rich in minerals. You can easily reach the eight pools via the walkways.
We recommend visiting the high-altitude lagoons on the salt flats in the Los Flamencos National Reserve, south of Socaire, at an altitude of 14,764 feet (4,500 metres). Laguna Chaxa, in particular, is home to a large colony of flamingos, while at Laguna Cejar - where you can swim - the high salt concentration has the same effect on the body as the Dead Sea. You’ll also be amazed by the geothermal phenomena here: the Tatio geysers - one of the world's largest geothermal fields, stretching over nearly 12 square miles (30 km²). Visitors weave their way between dozens of steam fumaroles shooting high into the sky. El Tatio also features around a hundred naturally hot springs and mud volcanoes, making for an impressive spectacle. In the midst of this extraordinary natural beauty, you can also visit Machuca, a herders’ village that has kept its soul. Once night falls, take advantage of the clear sky to stargaze with no light pollution at all. You're accompanied by a team of scientists who share their telescopes and binoculars to help you unravel the mysteries of certain celestial bodies. Between spotting constellations, you can relax and sip a hot drink, taking in the privilege of being in this special place.
See & do - Head north towards Salar de Aguas Calientes, 96 miles (154 km) from San Pedro at an altitude of 13,780 feet (4,200 metres). It's a truly magical place where the striking whiteness of the ground contrasts with the multicoloured hills. Not far from Paso de Sico, at the Argentine border, Piedras Rojas is known for its blazing red stones, coloured by the accumulation of iron oxide. Along the way, you'll also pass the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, where you may be lucky enough to spot flamingos, as well as vicuñas, rheas and foxes.
Optional - A private ascent of Cerro Toco on foot.
At the end of the day, return the rental car.
Private transfer to Hito Cajón, the mountain pass marking the Chile-Bolivia border, then continue to the Uyuni salt flats. There's no signal here, no houses in the distance - just a vast desert landscape, snow-capped mountains, and incredible colours. This is one of South America’s most beautiful landscapes and the largest salt flat in the world, perched at an altitude of 12,000 feet (3,650 metres), spanning 4,087 square miles (10,582 km²), with 64 billion tonnes of salt and significant lithium reserves. The salt crunches underfoot, dazzles in the sun, and makes you question everything you thought you'd experienced so far. Walking on the horizontal is dizzying.
Overnight stay on the edge of the salar. Blending seamlessly into its surroundings, your hotel was the first in the region to be built entirely from salt - or rather, from salt bricks. The result is striking and very appealing. Common areas and guest rooms have also been renovated with elegance and a strong focus on comfort. Guests can also enjoy specialist treatments at the on-site spa and an indoor pool surrounded by windows - the perfect spot to admire the sun setting over the salar. The restaurant serves simple but enjoyable cuisine, with a Bolivian mountain fusion twist.
Over the next three days, you can make use of a vehicle with dedicated driver to explore this fascinating place.
Travel by private vehicle across this incredible white expanse. Along the way, if you wish, you can stop in the village of Colchani to visit a small craft market and see how salt from the salt flat is dried, refined and bagged using traditional methods. After all, the salar is an ancient inland sea. It even has an island: Incahuasi Hill (House of the Inca), where giant candelabra cacti break the salar’s abstract effect - and one of them is over 28 feet (8 m) tall. It’s like another planet.
At the end of the day, settle in for the night in an arid, hypnotic landscape, at a unique mountain refuge built from volcanic stone, in perfect harmony with its surroundings. The property is rustic but has a bar and restaurant. This is a chance to truly experience the Andean spirit, especially when the heating is switched off at midnight and you’re snug under thick blankets.
Today, we're heading to the Paseo del León, a canyon carved out with many rock shelters. The bright green of the enormous clumps of yareta - a woody plant that forms curious cushion shapes - stands out against the mineral ochre and beige. Along the way, you’ll pass the Jewels of the Andes: lagunas (small lakes) with striking colours perched between 4,000 and 4,200 metres above sea level. We’ll then continue towards the Siloli Desert, a fascinating lunar landscape whose colours shift with the daylight. A real treat for photography lovers! You’ll spend the night in a hotel-village where the cottages cluster together to withstand the winds. Their stone walls blend modestly into the rocky landscape, where jarava ichu grass grows like a beard. Once again, the setting is rustic, but the palpable presence of the great surrounding nature softens it. Next, you’ll be quickly revived by a generous dinner enjoyed in the warmly heated restaurant. As ambassadors of an absolutely stunning region - but one that must be earned - the staff go out of their way to look after you.
Cross the border again at Hito Cajón and spend the night in San Pedro de Atacama. This time, stay in an intimate lodge built from local materials - earth and wood - assembled by hand. The result is beautiful and at one with the rural setting, planted with native trees, maize fields and sunflowers. In the distance, the majestic Andes rise, along with Licancabur Volcano.
Private transfer to Calama airport and flight to Santiago. Another private transfer to Valparaíso and a two-night stay in an elegant early-20th-century house. Behind its handsome royal-blue classical façade, a dozen comfortable rooms sit feature eclectic décor and well-judged arty touches. Interiors are modern throughout, with high ceilings and plenty of natural light. The furnishings come from a variety of places: carved wooden doors brought from the UK, rugs from the Middle East, Latin American religious sculptures, a Buddha and contemporary art. The result is a property with a harmonious feel that also extends to the charming shaded garden. From the top-floor terrace, guests enjoy views over Valparaíso and the port that has attracted sailors, artists and intellectuals alike.
Set like an amphitheatre on vast hills - the cerros - framing a lovely bay open to the Pacific, “Valpo” is like an open-air museum. Before the Panama Canal existed, every ship stopped here - at least those that survived the perilous Cape Horn crossing. It's a legendary city inhabited by sailors and whalers, attracting poets, writers and artists galore. It's not hard to see why when you take in the thousands of small, colourful houses clad in corrugated metal, seemingly stacked one on top of another. Their walls, covered in frescoes and paintings, make for wonderful walks through a charmingly disordered maze of irregular lanes. Climb to the heights on the historic ascensores, funiculars, the first of which was built in 1883 on Cerro Concepción.
. In your itinerary - A private cooking workshop with a Chilean chef. Your host knows exactly what they're talking about. The secret to a successful dish is, above all, good ingredients. The day begins with a trip to the market visit to buy the fresh produce that will form the basis of lunch. Back in the kitchen, you prepare a pisco sour - the national cocktail - and a full menu (starter-main-dessert), following the chef’s guidance as they share their culinary secrets, before you sit down to enjoy your meal.
Private transfer to Santiago airport and international return flight. Night on board, arrival the next day.
