100% customisable travel idea
Peru - Lima - Cusco - Machu Picchu - Lake Titicaca
100% customisable for you
Private transfer and two nights' accommodation in the Barranco district. The Belle Epoque mansion has been restored to its former glory, giving the hotel a touch of chic. The beautiful volumes have been preserved and bay windows and teatinas let in plenty of light. This, combined with the white walls, creates the perfect setting for the art collection. The rooms exude the same atmosphere, softened by the dark brown flooring and grey bedheads. They are comfortable, of course, but also have a certain something about them that is utterly charming. The cosy dining room and lounge are unmistakably European in style. Oscar Velarde's cuisine skilfully combines local ingredients, often sourced from the chef's own farm, with Mediterranean inspiration, so it’s a great introduction to Peruvian gastronomy.
Already on your itinerary - Private tour of Barranco. A guide will take you on a tour of one of the capital's most prominent neighbourhoods. Artists, designers and gallery owners have turned it into a bohemian meeting place for aesthetes. It must be said that these streets also have a lot of nostalgic and flowery charm that is enhanced by the regular passage of the old tramway. In the shops, craftsmanship and design go hand in hand, reminding you that while design is the beauty of the factory, craftsmanship is the design of the workshop. The neighbourhood's beaches have retained the aura of their high-class clientele at the turn of the 20th century. In the evening, we have reserved a table for you at the Central restaurant. This is Virgilio Martinez's restaurant, where each dish aims to express the coherence of the Peruvian ecosystem. This has propelled Lima's gastronomy to the top of international rankings. Your taxi has also been reserved.
Optional - Private cooking class with a chef.
Private transfer to the airport, then flight to Cuzco. Private transfer to Urubamba. Stay for three nights in a flower-filled garden. The bungalows are built in a vernacular style, decorated inside and out in warm tones of orange, purple, pink and red. In the high valleys, people like colourful surroundings. Great attention to detail has gone into the design of the very comfortable rooms, which have a pleasant bathroom. In the common areas, there is handcrafted furniture, leather armchairs and wool. Every corner features attractive decorative touches. In the dining room, impeccably laid tables serve up stunning Andean cuisine. The spa practitioners professionally administer a full range of treatments which, with the help of the swimming pool, ensure that the altitude and sightseeing do not get the better of travellers' fitness levels.
Already planned - The Boleto Turístico General. Unmissable! This ten-day ticket gives access to a whole series of museums and sites in Cuzco and the Sacred Valley. On your itinerary: Sacsayhuaman Fortress, Qenko Sanctuary, Puca Pucara Fortress, Tambomachay Sacred Site, Tipon Inca Agricultural Terraces, Chinchero Village, Regional History Museum, Contemporary Art Museum, etc.
Optional - Tasting lunch on the terraces of Moray, at Virgilio Martinez's Mil Centro restaurant.
On your itinerary - Local markets bring everyone together in a riot of bright colours, with the highland Indians recognisable by their red ponchos. You set off on your tour by car, with a driver and a guide. Starting with Pisaq: market (fresh cheese, chicken, herbs, bread, cabbage, guinea pigs, corn and potatoes of all kinds), centuries-old agricultural terraces and Inca citadel. At the other end of the valley, the fortified site of Ollantaytambo is a magnificently preserved example of Inca urban planning.
Optional - Relaxing day at the spa.
Already on your itinerary - Transfer to Ollantaytambo station and panoramic train to Aguas Calientes / Machu Picchu Pueblo. Then, in the shuttle bus that follows the winding road, you prepare yourselves for the shock. Because Machu Picchu, the citadel of Pachacutec, is such an astonishing feat of engineering that it leaves you speechless. The beauty of the mountains, the scale of the design, the logistics and engineering required to build it, and the vigour and ingenuity demonstrated by the Incas here are beyond comprehension. Amazement, in the strongest sense of the word! To go beyond a simple sense of wonder and gain a deeper understanding of its majesty, a private guide accompanies the visit. Then, transfer to the station and panoramic train to Cuzco Poroy.
Stay for two nights at Plaza de las Nazarenas, in a beautiful 16th-century residence. Behind the white façade with green window frames, the courtyard and its arcades and galleries is enchanting in itself. The interior designers have succeeded in striking a balance between Andean baroque and cottage style. The touch of colonial decor adds to the comfort and contributes to the pleasure of staying here. The rooms allow you to turn around, even twirl, and the bathrooms too, whose marble matches that of the fireplaces. In the kitchen, the chef and his team prepare traditional, refined and tasty cuisine. The massage service adds well-being to the good life.
On your itinerary - Cuzco, capital of Tahuantinsuyu, the Inca empire. Accompanied by a private guide, visit the Catedral de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen, which dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, and the Temple of the Sun, Qoricancha, on whose foundations the Santo Domingo convent has stood since the 16th century. You can also visit the sacred site of Qenqo, which is four miles (six kilometres) north-east of Cuzco, and Puca Pucara, the red fortress, which is a military structure that was part of the capital's defence system. In the distance, the snow-capped peaks of Ausangate glisten in the clear air. Then, to complete the tour, visit Tambomachay, the Inca baths (whose function is uncertain, but which feature elaborate hydraulic systems) and Sacsayhuaman (this triple zigzag wall forming the head of a puma is a tour de force as the assembly of the monoliths is a feat of cyclopean precision).
Private transfer to the station and boarding the Titicaca train. The luxury and comfort of the facilities make this journey a unique experience, a journey within a journey. Outside, it is not the proverbial cows watching the train go by, but vicuñas or llamas. On the long plains with sparse vegetation, flocks of flamingos go about perpetuating their species. To ensure passengers are comfortable, there is an open-air observation car and two Pullman-style dining cars from the 1920s, served by elite teams. Accompanied by talented musicians, you watch Urcos - a legendary place - La Raya, the highest point of the journey, and finally Juliaca pass before your eyes, before reaching Puno just after tea time.
Upon arrival, private transfer and stay for two nights about 19 miles (30 km) from the port, in a lodge with clean lines that looks as if it were designed by a Danish designer. The 18 rooms open onto Lake Titicaca. The lake is an integral part of the stay, with its presence, its shimmering horizontality, its sounds, its changing colours and its inhabitants - the hotel works with the Indian communities in a commitment to the sustainable development of the local economy. At the helm of the kitchen, chef Maria Fé Garcia has put the Altiplano on every foodie's list of places to visit. Life and architecture here are governed by the rule of balance.
Many outdoor activities are organised from the hotel, such as kayaking or canoeing on the lake, nature walks, mountain biking, trekking, and more. But there are also visits to the weavers of Copamaya, for example, or to the chullpas (pre-Inca tomb towers) of Sillustani on Lake Umayo, and to the San Pedro Martir church in Juli. Or to the artificial islands of the Uros Titinos, which are made of layers of reeds (totora) and a famous feature of Titicaca. Some are still inhabited and traditional totora reed boats come and go, transporting tourists as well as regular residents. Or to Taquile, the island where the men knit and the women weave (and whose textile art has been listed by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity).
Private transfer to Juliaca airport and return flight, via Lima.
