This journey follows a straight line from Luang Prabang to Vientiane, passing through Vang Vieng, north of the Nam Ngum Dam. So we’re going from the old capital to the new one. Between the two, paddy fields form a timeless, peaceful link. In Luang Prabang, discover the mighty Mekong River. Rising in the Himalayas, it has shaped history, culture and economy along its course. Luang Prabang is the old capital of Lan Xang Hom Khao (Land of a Million Elephants and the White Parasol). This Lao kingdom, founded under Khmer influence, existed from the 14th to 18th century and remains a cultural touchstone and a showcase of brilliant architecture. It is now a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend three fascinating days here before setting out to experience the green embrace of the forest. Then take the railway south. Around Vang Vieng, the shimmering fields framed by bunds, the buffalo, white herons and slow boats all point to the heartland of rice country. During the day, cycle through the countryside and climb karst hills; in the evening, relax, drink in hand, listening to the frogs singing. The people you meet will introduce you to the agricultural world and its sanctuaries. Like everywhere else, farmers are much better informed about the ways of the world than you might imagine. Finally, in the country's nerve centre, Vientiane, you’ll be charmed by the variety of its architecture and its horizontal, leafy, airy aspect. The city seems to embrace its role as Laos’s gateway to globalisation without any haste or frenzy. This is likely thanks to its Buddhist culture. And certainly thanks to the Mekong River. You’ll have time to become attuned to the city, amidst its temples and motorbikes.

Your Trip

In Laos, the train is an attraction both inside and out. It’s practically guaranteed that you won’t get bored during the journey, whether you look out of the window or around you. The Luang Prabang-Vang Vieng and Vang Vieng-Vientiane connections are not pointless gaps in the trip; they are activities in their own right. You’ll be comfortable too, as you’ll be travelling in a soft seat. And, unlike airports, train stations are located in city centres. So you lose less time on transfers and reach your hotel more quickly. We have selected quality properties for you that combine the spirit of Laos with high-end comfort. The settings are not pretentious, but are appropriate and adapted to the circumstances. The aim is to avoid any abrupt disruptions in the ambiance between day and night, as you pass from the general to the particular. And we never want you to feel anonymous. So that’s the idea. The excursions we have included in your itinerary also invite you to get closer to the real Laos. Visit an organic farm, cycle through the countryside, or take in Vientiane Like a Local. If you would also like to try your hand at traditional silk weaving, get close to elephants, or go on a hot air balloon ride over the Vang Vieng area, simply let us know. And if you have any concerns or last-minute requests along the way, you’ll have the contact details of our on site Concierge to assist you.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Night on board, arrival the next day.

Transfer. Stay for three nights in a quiet spot just a few minutes’ walk from the centre. Lao-inspired pavilions are scattered through a generous garden where vegetation is abundant and releases plenty of oxygen around the paths and water features. The rooms, overlooking a lotus pond, balance contemporary design with traditional architecture. Lao home-style cooking is served beneath the dining room awning. After a full day of sightseeing, the pool and spa beckon. Before long, you’ll fall into an easy rhythm.

Today, you explore at your own pace. The former royal capital, once Vientiane’s rival, is quietly reconnecting with the splendour of its past. The country’s reopening to travellers and the attention of institutions such as UNESCO have provided momentum. The challenge has been to balance outside interest with domestic priorities - something that is gradually being achieved. Buildings and monuments have been restored, including those from the French Protectorate period, which the Lao have chosen to integrate into their national heritage. The overall effect is very appealing. The atmosphere shifts from street to street, yet something gentle and harmonious remains everywhere. Nothing rises high enough to diminish the mountain backdrop. It's a city on a human scale, where nature still finds its place. A deeply religious city where Buddhism and its temples set the tone. At dawn, bronze bells wake the monks, who soon set out for the tak bat, the alms-giving ritual. A new day begins.
Optional - Visit to Pak Ou caves; introduction to weaving.

In your itinerary - Organic rice fields and the Kuang Sy waterfalls. A full day in the countryside. At an organic farm cultivating essential Oryza sativa, you begin with a tour of the paddies, then step barefoot into the mud to plough behind a water buffalo - one of humanity’s great civilising gestures. You then transplant seedlings and follow each stage that leads to the woven basket in which the rice is steamed - before tasting the result. On the way back, stop at the celebrated Kuang Sy waterfalls, south of Luang Prabang. Nestled in lush greenery where light and shadow play, several cascades tumble down; at the bottom, the water gathers in a series of natural pools where you can swim all year round. The tour is accompanied by a private guide.

A final chance to savour Luang Prabang’s charms before heading around 9 miles (15 km) out of town to the banks of the Nam Khan River. The river’s presence works its gentle magic - both dynamic and serene. Forest sounds carry clearly across the water. Light flickers. Sensations are heightened. Overnight stay on the edge of the jungle in a superb Lao-style property of brick and wood, galleries and carved balustrades, ponds and pavilions. Nothing is missing - not even vintage European furniture. The rooms are completely comfortable. The restaurant contributes to the atmosphere with precise, confident cooking. There’s a lovely pool for a swim - and a hot tub.
Optional - Meet the elephants.

Transfer to the station, then take the train to Vang Vieng. Another transfer and two-night stay on the banks of the Nam Song River. Proximity to water always exerts a certain magic. Add to that striking views of near and distant karst formations. Here - as in Halong Bay or Ninh Binh - erosion has shaped a distinctive landscape art. Colonial-inspired buildings are set within a large garden around a swimming pool. Inside, expect bright spaces and elegant simplicity. Well-equipped, comfortable rooms draw subtle inspiration from Laos’s various ethnic groups. Tables laid along the first-floor gallery offer sweeping views to accompany your meals. In the kitchen, the national repertoire of - or lam (meat), mok pa (fish), jeow ha yaang (rice), and more - sits alongside international dishes - tilapia ceviche, flank steak with shallots, burgers. The spa and massage centre provide a decidedly groovy wellbeing hub.

In your itinerary - Cycling in the countryside. Nature provides both the setting - and what a setting! - and the targets of this mountain-bike day, accompanied by a private guide. A landscape of limestone pinnacles, mineral folds, rice paddies and forests asserts itself with sumptuous clarity. As you pedal, you notice wooden footbridges that seem to lead nowhere, surrounded by lotus ponds, or the white-and-gold tombs of Buddhist cemeteries. The urge to continue never fades. A visit to one of the region’s many karst caves is a highlight - an interior theatre of beige limestone formations that invites both reverie and geological curiosity. The mountain’s intimacy.
Optional - Vang Vieng from the air.

Transfer to the station, then take the train to Vientiane. Transfer. Two-night stay near Wat Ong Teu. The building’s ocean-liner style is softened by decorative details that subtly remind you that you are in the Lao capital - elegant without lapsing into folklore. Rooms are beautifully proportioned and offer refined comfort, with fine materials, harmonious décor and atmosphere. The modern touch is perfectly judged. Naturally, there’s a restaurant on site serving the national cuisine with both pride and precision. The spa is especially welcome at this stage of the trip - a chance to unwind from your adventures here and prepare for the journey home.

In your itinerary - Vientiane like a local. Meet a city insider adopted by Laos. Language skills, passion, culture and lived experience are all placed at your disposal. After a quick discussion about preferences and tastes, you set off together. The aim is to get as close as possible to daily life and to engage with it through its most authentic points of access. Some will want to mingle shoulder to shoulder with locals; others may prefer a little distance; while others will move between the two. You might try some sticky rice balls, klao niaw; listen to the sound of the khene mouth organ; try Bolovens cafe; watch a muay lao training session; sniff out a bargain at the Morning Market... Anything is possible. Or almost.

Transfer to the airport and return flight. Night on board, arrival the next day.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Luang Prabang - Visit the Pak Ou Caves

Devotees have populated these natural caves with hundreds of Buddha statues. To get there, take a boat along the Mekong, combining the pleasure of a river sail with the splendid scenery of limestone hills and wild forests. At the point where the Ou River meets the Mekong, the first cave looks a bit like a cavity at the base of a tall cliff. It is reached by stairs. On the way back, stop on a sandbank for cocktails and appetisers at sunset. The time of day gives the natural surroundings a new, magnetic dimension.
Optional

Luang Prabang - Introduction to Weaving

A tuk-tuk will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the Ock Pop Tok (East meets West) Living Crafts Centre. The objective of this artisan social enterprise is to make Lao culture accessible through textiles and, in particular, the rich tradition of weaving. A workshop is delivered in English, beginning with an overview of the techniques and importance of silk weaving. Then comes the practical part: creating a piece of fabric under the guidance of a Lao teacher. Close attention and precision are required to achieve a decent result. You’ll feel a sense of satisfaction, perhaps even pride, to have accomplished it. Then take your precious fabric with you in the tuk-tuk back to your hotel.
Optional

Luang Prabang - Meet the Elephants

Arrive by kayak, a truly stimulating and participative way to explore one of the most beautiful sections of the Nam Khan River as you paddle through pure tropical romanticism. Disembark to receive a brief introduction to elephants. Although large, these pachyderms remain secretive. The estate continues the tradition of the mahout, a handler who rides and looks after the elephant. It’s a very special relationship and an essential part of Laos’s cultural heritage. The bullhook is banned here, along with any violence towards animals. Instead the animals are treated patiently over time. And given special treats. For example, you’ll see them getting a bath, and experience all this up close.
Optional

Vang Vieng From the Sky

The adventure begins at sunrise. As you climb into the basket, the burner has already started heating the air and your hot air balloon unfurls against the sky. And then, up you go! Leave the ground for a flight above shimmering paddy fields, meandering bronze waterways, and irregular, lumpy karst. This landscape, which is beautiful at ground level, becomes mesmerizing when you travel through it on the wind. And being there at dawn brings its own unique tones, adding the optimism of a new beginning. Let’s greet the new day with a glass of sparkling wine upon our return to the ground.
