The “guay” in “Uruguay” means “great” in Spanish. Yes, but that’s in Spain. Here, when we like something, we say it’s bárbaro. A word that could definitely be used to describe this road trip through one of the most generous micro-countries in South America. Not at all showy, Uruguay still manages to attract the entire elite of the continent - and beyond - to its beaches every year. But far from glitz and pretentiousness, the country has fostered a stylish, boho vibe embracing hippies and wealthy alike. Living in flip-flops tends to bring people together. Your must-see introduction is the capital city of Montevideo. Its certain charm and appeal is no doubt thanks to its eclectic architecture, laid-back attitude and compact size -which are pretty representative of the nation as a whole. It’s an introduction to many things, including maté, the invigorating drink that unites the nation, and beef, worthy of the finest hotels, enjoyed without fuss at market stalls. From there, head straight to Colonia del Sacramento, the oldest city in the country, set on the banks of the Río de la Plata. Portuguese settlers left their mark here, and over time, Uruguayans have shaped it into what it is today: a charming little gem where the salty air is imbued with a sense of history and calm. It takes just under an hour to reach Carmelo - in a larger country, it would be called a neighbouring town. We continue to follow the Río north to a region characterised by its love for the land and the wine that is produced here so ardently. Next, it’s time to head to Pueblo Eden, literally “paradise village”, which takes us slightly away from the coast and closer to serenity. Life in these rural lands flows at a “tranquilo” pace dictated by nature. But already, the playa is beckoning; and why resist its call, when such a beautiful coastline is just a stone’s throw away? Spend the final days of the trip in José Ignacioa, a charming fishing village turned upmarket seaside resort. Away from the buzz and glamour of Punta del Este, here you’ll be immersed in charm, wandering on the golden sand of endless beaches with your gaze on the sunset over the water…

Your Accommodation

It's not just a place to lay your head! For us, on a trip like this, accommodation is just as important as everything else. We have therefore selected accommodation full of character in unique locations that make all the difference. The refined elegance of your palatial hotel in Montevideo evokes the nostalgia and grandeur of a by-gone era. In Colonia del Sacramento, your cosy sanctuary is tucked away in the heart of the historic district, with a view of the Río. In Carmelo, an intimate lodge among the vineyards awaits. At Pueblo Eden, you’ll stay out in the countryside, in a haven within a vineyard, offering independence and sweeping rural views. Finally, in José Ignacio, we have selected a trendy, contemporary waterfront setting, incorporating art in a natural way. In each place, attentive service and swimming pools (including a private one in Pueblo Eden) invite you to unwind - or rinse off the salt. You are always as close as possible to nature, whether countryside, vineyards, or riverbanks - and as far from others as you can be.

Your Trip

With (very) reasonable distances and good quality roads, Uruguay is crying out for a road trip. Throughout your journey, you’ll have a hire vehicle, so you can explore as you wish. Add to that our mobile app with GPS and personalised recommendations, and you’re all set. To ensure you make the most of every stop on your journey, we have already added a few highlights to your itinerary: in Montevideo, a private tour of the Old Town; in Colonia, a guided tour with an introduction to mate and a dinner reservation at one of the city’s top restaurants. Of course, you can add other activities, tastings and excursions to your schedule. For this purpose, and to handle any concerns, you’ll have the contact details of our on-site Concierge.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Night spent on the plane, arrival the next day.

On arrival, take a private transfer and settle in for two nights in a magnificent building listed as a national heritage site, overlooking the bay of Montevideo. With its Haussmann-style chateau appearance, it is, in a way, the “palace” of Uruguay. And it’s easy to see why: it blends the nostalgia of early 20th-century Montevideo with the French art of living, with elegance and impeccable service as its guiding principles. The rooms and suites are very comfortable and fully equipped. You can relax in the pool and have fun at the casino.
On your itinerary - A private tour of Montevideo’s must-see attractions. Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, is also its main port. It faces the impressive estuary of the Río de la Plata, a river that flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Considerably less sprawling and bustling than its Argentine neighbour, Montevideo offers travellers a walkable environment on a manageable scale. A gentle way of life lived in a tranquil atmosphere make it appealing, with its long avenues, parks that are ideal for strolling, and eclectic architecture, including Art Nouveau and colonial era. Accompanied by a guide, you discover all this, starting with the cathedral, the Torres García and Gurvich museums, the Citadel Gate and Constitution Square. Not to mention the Mercado del Puerto, a former warehouse now transformed into a market for local products. Since 1960, it has been bustling with small restaurants and parrillas, art galleries, and craft shops. It offers an unrivalled selection of meats in a lively, entertainment-filled atmosphere. The dishes are usually cooked in front of customers, then served at the counters. So don’t hesitate to test the local specialities and customs for yourself at one of the market’s most traditional restaurants - as an option.

Things to see and do - Stroll along the port; wander around Plaza Independencia and Avenida 18 de Julio; admire the dizzying eclecticism of Palacio Salvo; visit Fortaleza del Cerro, a former military fort; and stroll through the botanical garden in Prado Park.
Optional - Enjoy dinner and a show in an exclusive club, showcasing Uruguayan culture through local dances and music.

Pick up your rental car and drive to Colonia del Sacramento (2 hours and 30 minutes away), following the Río de la Plata. Enjoy a two-night stay at an exclusive hotel in a prime location in the historic city, on the riverbank. A handful of rooms for customised service, with plenty of space and natural light. The stone walls blend beautifully with the omnipresent white and the pared-back contemporary décor. It’s charming. Special mention for the views over the río, breakfast on the terrace, and dinner at sunset.

On your itinerary - Discover Colonia, the oldest city in the country, with a beautiful historical heritage rightfully recognised by UNESCO. A mix of solemnity and exclusivity, its urban landscape is a successful fusion of several architectural styles. Here, Portuguese, Spanish and post-colonial influences blend. This can all be discovered on a walk with a private guide who takes you to the port, the fort, past Spanish and Portuguese houses, through the city centre, and along the Rambla bordering the old town. Also planned for the visit is cultural immersion centred around maté, a common drink and an essential part of Uruguayan daily life. This presents the opportunity to learn about local techniques and practices, which differ from those of their Argentine neighbours.
For your evening plans -We have booked a table for you at a fine restaurant, close to the historic centre. The setting: a 1920s building, fully restored in the style of the era, showcasing beautiful antique pieces. Make yourself comfortable on the terrace or in the indoor lounge to enjoy dishes that put a new spin on traditional Uruguayan cuisine, prepared with produce from the organic garden.

Drive to Carmelo (an hour away) and settle in for two nights at the heart of a large wine estate playing many roles - lodge, farm, renowned restaurant and, of course, winery. Only five rooms welcome guests here, ensuring a gentle, exclusive atmosphere. Inside, the charm of the old combines with modern comfort. You are invited to feel at home, and it’s easy to do so. During the day, hop on a bike to explore the vineyards, swim a few refreshing laps in the pool, or sip a drink on your terrace. Not to be missed: the restaurant, set in the former grocery store, and a vino y queso (wine and cheese) tasting.

The local vineyard, planted by Spanish settlers, was for a long time limited to a single grape variety - Muscatel. But in the second half of the 19th century, the Basque Pascual Harriague introduced a new variety: tannat, originally from Madiran. To this day it remains the benchmark grape variety in Uruguay, where it thrives in fertile soils and abundant sunshine. Carmelo is the ideal base for visiting bodegas and learning more about Uruguayan wines and their history. Don’t hesitate to visit two or three vineyards in the region - family-run cellars or personal projects - each a different size, but all devoted to a love of wine.
Things to see and do - Paddle a canoe on the Río de la Plata; saddle up and ride through the area on horseback, gaucho style; try polo; or play a round on one of the many local golf courses.
Optional -- Take a private tour along the wine route.

Drive to Pueblo Eden (two hours away) and check in for two nights at a stylish hotel nestled in the heart of a 620-acre (250-hectare) vineyard. A few glass-enclosed cabins with green roofs are scattered here and there, blending seamlessly into the landscape. Each one offers panoramic views of the vineyards and has a small private pool. A minimalist style of light oak and dark stone is revealed inside. As a bonus: a restaurant that stays true to the farm-to-table spirit. A paradise in Eden.

Aided by the fact that there is very little car traffic, a peaceful atmosphere and a relaxed pace prevail in Pueblo Eden, a tiny town in the Maldonado department. You stroll at leisure along the dirt paths, in a lush, green countryside setting. However, its isolation has not prevented the village from excelling in cuisine that you taste at the very first opportunity.

Drive to José Ignacio (50 minutes away) and check in for three nights just steps from the beach, at a charming hotel displaying contemporary architecture and attentive service. The suites and bungalows feature trendy, arty decor that is very well done. Your comfortable suite has an ocean view, as does the restaurant. The pool is ideal for warming up before taking the plunge. A unique atmosphere prevails here, sparking an irresistible urge to extend your journey.

With its dirt roads, picturesque lighthouse and colourful boats, this former fishing village has become an upmarket resort. However, José Ignacio has more of a hippie-chic vibe than a flashy one. Seaside walks, meals facing the sunset, and relaxing on warm sand quickly become second nature. Take advantage of the peaceful atmosphere to clear your mind.
Things to see and do - Visit the Atchugarry Foundation, created by the eponymous sculptor to promote art in all of its forms; explore the surrounding countryside; admire the façades - some are among the most stylish on the coast.
Optional -A tour of José Ignacio with a private guide; a day trip to one of the country’s most beautiful natural sites, Cabo Polonio, and a visit to a traditional estancia.

Drive to Montevideo airport (2 hours and 15 minutes), return the car, and take your international flight home. Night spent on the plane, arrival the next day.

Montevideo - Lunch at Mercado del Puerto

To experience Uruguayan culture, there’s nothing like having lunch at Mercado del Puerto, a place with a unique atmosphere serving delightful small plates in an astonishingly welcoming though simple setting. From the menu, try a traditional parrillada: melted cheese, grilled beef steak and a typical dessert. Dishes are usually cooked in front of you and meant to be enjoyed right at the counter, just like a real Uruguayan.

Optional

Montevideo - Dinner and Show

After a fine dining experience, take your seat for a show that presents Uruguayan culture through its music and dance. Spend an evening away from it all, imbued with the rhythm of tango and more, in a plush, intimate, cabaret-style atmosphere. For a stress-free evening, private transfers to and from your hotel are already included.

Carmelo Wine Route

Carmelo is the wine region of Uruguay. Take this opportunity to explore the history of the national wine on a guided tour starting at the national monument “La Calera de las Huérfanas” - the birthplace of local wine-growing where the first Jesuits settled in the 18th century. Next, we visit two family-run bodegas of different sizes, including one of the oldest wineries in the country.
Optional

José Ignacio - Day Trip to Cabo Polonio

Less than two hours from José Ignacio, Cabo Polonio National Park is one of the most beautiful natural sites in Uruguay. Here, you can admire extraordinary landscapes, far from civilisation, and dazzling nature that invites you to enjoy its wild beaches. Climb to the top of the lighthouse to admire the view and watch a large population of sea lions before heading on to La Pedrera, La Aguada and La Paloma - neighbouring resorts - and to a traditional estancia (cattle ranch) that is home to many birds.
