Itinerary highlights

  • A whistle on a railway platform signals the start of a week on the trains discovering the cities that make up the Netherlands
  • Your accommodation in the Netherlands is beautiful. You’ll stay in places with a central location, sleek design and strong character.
  • Rotterdam with a local, Utrecht via the canals, Delft pottery, your tickets to major museums: it's all planned
  • Train travel, carbon absorption, our bespoke recommendations, on-site Concierge service: the extra Voyageurs touch
Of course, Amsterdam has its own selling points. This does not mean that the rest of the Netherlands should be overlooked - quite the opposite in fact. Other major Dutch cities also have canals running through them and are full of cyclists. These cities are determined to attract some of the spotlight that is more often than not focused on the capital. In Rotterdam, the remains of the bombings have given way to avant-garde architecture that appeals to people who love that style and intrigues those who are unfamiliar with it. Further inland, Utrecht has canals dug below street level, giving it a real Amsterdam feel. And it's quieter too! As for Leiden, it exudes the confidence of a city that boasts both a historic centre and proximity to the sea. Surrounded by these intimidating neighbours, Delft has managed to carve out a place for itself. Four hundred years after the birth of its pottery (Delftware) and the Delft-born painter Vermeer, the city remains an inspirational place. And even if you need to leave the city to admire Vermeer’s work, that's not a problem because the Mauritshuis in The Hague is only a ten-minute train ride away. The Hague, which is home to many European and governmental institutions, is even closer to the sea, but its castle and beautiful urban parks make it worth staying in the city. This is already a busy itinerary for your railway trip, but you could also add a stop in Gouda, for example. It's hard to resist the urge to extend the adventure when everything is so close together. Don't worry. There's no need to decide now. You can request your travel specialist to review the itinerary at any time, even once you're already there.br />

Your trip

Every place can be easily reached by train. The lines are direct and the journeys are short. With no worries about driving, parking or renting a car, you can relax and enjoy the journey. It's the best way to travel. What's more, once you've arrived at your destination, you'll travel in first class wherever possible. Only the best for your trip! This also applies to your accommodation, which is full of character and charm. Minimalist design in Rotterdam, cosy comfort in Utrecht, flamboyant baroque style in Leiden and historic charm in Delft. Of course, all of these are city centres. There is so much to see and no time to lose. And the canal is never far away, which makes it easier for you to explore. Your days are filled up just the right amount, with pre-booked activities so that you don't miss anything essential, including Rotterdam with an expert and Utrecht by private boat. And, of course, you have pre-booked tickets to some carefully selected museums, such as the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, the Royal Delft Museum, and the Mauritshuis. For the rest of the time, you can wander around as you please, with a few suggestions nonetheless for visits you can do on your own. These recommendations are based on our personal experience in the area. Also, if necessary, our Concierge at your destination can help you with ideas.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Upon arrival, stay for one night right in the city centre at a hotel with an understated aesthetic. With Japanese and Scandinavian influences, minimalism sets the tone, from the size of the rooms to the furnishings and the colours of the interiors, all in natural, subtle shades. A grand staircase leads to the three floors above where there are ten or so rooms. The cafe on the ground floor is the perfect place to fuel up before heading out to explore the city.
In your itinerary - Rotterdam with a local. As the gateway to Europe and the region’s biggest port, Rotterdam is a strategic hub. It’s hardly surprising, then, that only a tiny part of the city survived the ravages of the Second World War. Extensive reconstruction has given the city what some consider a futuristic feel. Others just think it's slightly strange. To make sense of it all, there's nothing better than strolling around to explore it with a local.

Already planned - The Boijmans Van Beuningen Art Depot (you already have your tickets in hand).  Boijmans Van Beuningen is a concept in itself. At the outset, a somewhat bold idea: to make all the works kept in the museum’s storerooms accessible to the public. More than 151,000 pieces are on display here, in a setting that alone is worth the detour. Designed by the local agency MVRDV, the unusual six-storey building arranged around a central atrium is covered with 1,664 reflective glass panels, giving it a unique look as the seasons change.
Must see -  the Kinderdijk Windmills. Surrounded by the Lek River to the north and the Noord to the west, Kinderdijk is the very definition of a ”polder” - a place where people have wrestled with the elements. While the inhabitants built drainage systems as early as the 13th century, the structure at the heart of today’s visit - the drainage mills - was not erected until 1740. Even today, there are no fewer than 19 windmills here. This makes it the largest and best-preserved group in the country. To enhance your experience, you also have the option to take this tour by bicycle with a guide.
A short train ride to Utrecht (40 minutes) follows, where you’ll settle in for two nights on a typically Dutch square that immediately immerses you in the entertainment so characteristic of the city centre.

First thing in the morning the hotel is silent. You slept well and the room was very comfortable. In the distance, the cathedral's famous  Dom Tower chimes every quarter of an hour, as if beckoning you to visit soon.
In your itinerary - Private canal cruise. The true stars of Utrecht are its canals, Oudegracht ("the old canal") and Nieuwegracht ("the new canal"). To really get a feel for them, nothing beats a trip out on the water. With a skipper to handle the boat, you’re free to relax and take in the view.
Optional extra - Guided tour of Utrecht.

Another train journey, this time to Leiden (50 minutes). Stay for two nights overlooking the canal. You cannot tell the hotel's age from the outside. It’s not polite to ask but its over 400 years old. The interiors with their gilding, chandeliers and ceiling mouldings, wood panelling, parquet floors and velvet curtains reflect this historical aspect. As for the paintings on the walls, they bring to mind the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century. The whole place exudes a baroque atmosphere. You might even start to feel like royalty, especially given the attentive service.
Optional extras - Guided tour of Leiden; private boat tour.

There’s no time to dawdle in Leiden, the city has a host of attractions. From the Gothic Hooglandse Kerk to the Burcht (one of the oldest fortresses in the Netherlands), and the Stadhuis (Town Hall), there is no shortage of historical landmarks. Exhilarating Leiden is the birthplace of both the great painter Rembrandt and the country’s first university. And with 28 kilometres (17 miles) of canals, it is surpassed only by the capital.
Things to see and do - Spend the afternoon in the city’s botanical garden, breathing in the scent of wild roses, marvelling at tropical orchids, and getting lost in the fern garden; head to Katwijk beach at sunset and watch the sun disappear over the North Sea.

Train to Delft, which is not far away (20 minutes). The city prides itself on being one of the oldest cities of the Netherlands and having once been the country's second largest city. This is evident in the city’s architecture, be it in the dizzying tower of the Nieuwe Kerk, which is an excellent viewpoint, or the leaning tower of the Oude Kerk.
Stay for two nights in the historic centre, in a property that is just as old. Behind the 17th-century walls, there was first an arsenal, then a warehouse belonging to the Dutch East India Company. Sitting at the tip of a peninsula, the red brick building looks out over the water. The beautiful spacious rooms and timber features are remnants of the building's original purpose. All this only adds to the atmosphere.
Our suggestion - The Royal Delft Factory and Museum, independently. Delftware, or Delft Blue, was renowned in the 17th century for the quality and workmanship of its pieces. Four hundred years later, only the Royal Delft factory is still in operation, enabling this art, which is a source of pride for the city, to continue to flourish. On this tour you go behind the scenes of the pottery factory. Beyond the museum area, you can watch the artisans at work, fully absorbed in the delicate task of painting by hand, which is what the company is renowned for.
Optional extra - Guided tour of Delft.

Spend the day in The Hague, which is just 10 minutes by train from Delft. This is an elegant and diverse city where European and government institutions stand alongside museums of classical and contemporary art. The city also has plenty of beaches, forests and beautiful urban parks too. It's all very promising!
Already booked - Your tickets for the Mauritshuis. This magnificent 17th century palace is home to the finest Dutch paintings from the Golden Age, the era of Rembrandt and Vermeer. Would you like to see Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt and
The Goldfinch by Fabritius? They are all hanging here. And, as an optional extra, you can explore the museum with private guide, so you don’t miss a thing.
Things to see and do - Admire the Binnenhof, the former residence of the Counts of Holland (13th and 14th centuries), reflected in the Hofvijver; stroll along the canals (again); hop on an orange tram before heading back to Delft, by train again.

Highlights - Vermeer’s Delft, independently. Johannes Vermeer, one of the greatest Dutch painters of the 17th century, was born, lived and died in Delft. It may come as a surprise, then, that none of his works are on display in the city. With only 37 paintings to his name, his work is quite rare. Fortunately, you can admire full size reproductions of his works such as Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Milkmaid, View of Delft and The Astronomer at the Vermeer Centre. Be sure to follow the Vermeer Cube Walk too, a route that takes you to the important places from the artist’s life.
After exploring Delft, head to the station and take the train back via Rotterdam.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

A private guide in each city

It would be a shame to go all that way and miss out on the city and its secrets, so treat yourself to the services of a local guide who has expert knowledge about your destination. Whether in Utrecht, Leiden or Delft, we have many passionate, tried and tested guides available. The icing on the cake: they speak your language, so you won't miss any of the explanations and will get answers to all your questions.

With a few extra days: Gouda

Located about 20 minutes by train from Rotterdam, Gouda has become world-famous for its round cheese. It is not surprising therefore that you can find the yellow, circular cheese throughout the city, especially on Thursday mornings when the weekly market takes over the square. However, Gouda has much more to offer than its star cheese. The town is home to a lovely historic centre, which has canals and charming narrow streets running through it. If you take the time to stop and explore, you will discover, among other things, the Saint-John church and its stained glass windows, the 15th-century town hall and, beyond the city centre, charming countryside where Holstein cows (the ones with spots) graze against a backdrop of windmills and green meadows.
