  • Two places where the best of Nepalese hospitality is expressed: beautiful, delicious, inspiring
  • Kathmandu in the footsteps of a local, Bhaktapur, the Bodnath stupa, Ayurvedic treatments: it's all planned!
  • Mobile app, Wi-Fi, our recommendations, on-site Concierge: travel with Voyageurs
The monuments of the Kathmandu Valley - listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites - mark the different stages of the trip: the audience halls of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, the Hindu and Buddhist complexes of Bodnath, Pashupatinath and Changu Narayan. Nepalese art reveals all its facets and inspiration here. To admire it, we explore Kathmandu and its surroundings. Then, we go to catch our breath in the gentle hills of Dulikhel: meditation, yoga, rest, walks. And a magnificent view of the mountains. The two parts of the trip balance each other out because, ultimately, they are part of the same worldview. With that, there is the contemporary country, which is everywhere and has some pleasant surprises in store. Firstly, the Nepalese people, who have their own unique take on globalisation. It can be surprising at times, but it shows a certain discernment. Then there are the excellent material conditions of the stay. A sense of hospitality that cannot be put into words, despite the ways it has sometimes been misused. Your beautiful hotels illustrate this understanding of the way things are. Nepal is no longer the closed country that Sylvain Lévi knew - even if the pillar of Manadeva, whose inscription he deciphered, still stands in the temple of Changu Narayan - nor is it the country of hippies or the preserve of trekkers alone: it views the contemporary hustle and bustle with caution and benevolence. This makes it a real asset.

Your trip

First, two splendid hotels. The first, in Kathmandu, pays masterful homage to traditional Nepalese architecture and the valley's artisans, sculptors, modellers and weavers. A high-class setting, with facilities that meet contemporary standards. There is no break in atmosphere between your home and the charms of the city. In Dulikhel, your second accommodation makes the spectacle of nature a dynamic element of decoration. Here too, comfort and service are of an excellent standard, but with a more sophisticated country feel. Kathmandu is to do with the arts, Dulikhel with the elements. In both cases, you can enjoy delicious Himalayan slow food. To travel from one stop to the next and explore the surrounding area, private cars with drivers are available for short, safe journeys. To highlight the differences, numerous visits have been planned in Kathmandu (including a memorable ‘like a local experience), while daily pampering is enough to emphasise the serenity that reigns during your stay in the hills of Dulikhel. All the outings listed in your itinerary are accompanied by a private guide. And if you change your mind or something unexpected happens on the trip, you will have the contact details of our on-site Concierge service at your disposal.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Night on board, arrival the next day.

Meet and greet and assistance in English. Transfer. Stay for three nights in the Battisputali neighbourhood. The hotel reflects its founder’s attachment to traditional Newari architecture. The pink brick buildings are surrounded by a large garden. The facades feature elaborately carved wooden frames and galleries, and decorative terracotta carvings. This feels nothing like some ad hoc reconstruction, but traditional heritage confidently reinterpreted. Inside, the furniture, fabrics and embroidery all reflect the same spirit of skilled craftsmanship. The different shades of the floor tiles form a shimmering ochre palette. The rooms are airy and comfortable and beautifully arranged. There are three restaurants offering different cuisines. One serves dishes from the Kathmandu Valley, another features Japanese food, and the third specialises in international classics. The property’s two organic farms supply the kitchens with top-quality ingredients. There's an outdoor pool, gym, yoga studio and sauna to keep your body fit. Inspired by Ayurvedic practices, Buddhist medicine, and ancient Himalayan rituals, the spa has a deeper approach to wellness.

In your itinerary - Kathmandu like a local. Today, nothing is planned. You will meet with one of our friends from Kathmandu, have a quick chat about what type of things you’re interested in and take it from there. The aim is to give you a true feel of Nepal, whatever that means to you. Be they locals from Langtang, anthropologists or fashion addicts, your guides know the country and the city inside out. They can take you from the most well-known to the most hidden parts of the capital, depending on what you prefer. Along the way, of course, you will encounter plenty of unexpected surprises. It's also a great way to pick up tips for the rest of your trip and your own explorations. The guides are all experienced enough to be able to act on your whims. And don’t forget to relax. Because, perhaps above all, this is all about meeting someone new, as much as it is about getting to know the city. Let’s just say that one depends on the other. And that's how it should be.

In your itinerary - Pashupatinath Temple and Boudhanath Stupa. With its riverside location, cremations, sadhus, cows and atmosphere, Pashupatinath Temple is a bit like Benares. Its current Nepalese pagoda style dates from the 17th century. Lord Shiva is worshipped in the temple as Pashupati, the "Lord of Animals". The monumental Boudhanath Stupa dates from the 14th century. The stupa represents the five Buddhist elements with earth at the base, then water, fire, air, and ether, and the path to enlightenment. It was the inspiration for many of the Tibetan monasteries founded nearby. Southeast of Kathmandu, BhaktapurChangu Narayan temple, which has the oldest inscription in Nepal on a fifth century pillar. The temple is dedicated Vishnu, but Shiva, Ganesh, Kali and Krishna are also worshipped by the faithful. The richly decorated temple features classic Nepalese architecture, which differs from the usual pagoda and Shikhara styles.
Optional extra - Tour of a Thangka school.

Transfer to Dhulikhel. Stay for three nights on the hillside, a little to the east of the village. The atmosphere of the hotel is rather like a mountain retreat among the pines. The views of the immense Himalayan mountains are on display everywhere. The rooms overlook the mountains, as do the restaurant, the yoga studio, the meditation terraces and the infinity pool. This place is all about holistic healing and well-being. Enjoy the Nepalese luxury in your beautiful yet simple room where nothing is superfluous. The use of natural and local materials both inside and out have a positive calming effect. In-house Ayurvedic doctors are on hand for consultations. Ancient practices are available such as sound healing. And the spa has even more ways to nourish your soul. In the restaurant vegetarian food is on the menu interpreted in Japanese and international styles. Ingredients are selected with care the food is prepared with expert craftsmanship. The bar, with its fireplace and panoramic view of the eternal snows, truly deserves to be called an epicurean meditation retreat. Enjoy some hiking, try your hand at pottery or cookery to ground you in the present moment.
In your itinerary - During your stay in Dulikhel, you will receive various wellness treatments such as a relaxing massage; a medicinal herbal scrub; a shirodhara session (warm poured oil over your forehead); and a pada abhyanga session (leg, ankle and feet massage).

From the hotel, you have a clear view of the region’s landscape. Snow-capped peaks float in the distant blue, high hills are nearby, some covered in forest, others shaped by generations of farmers working the terraces. Beautiful Nepal is a vast country, best explored step by step. Walking tours are a great way to explore the surrounding area, but you need to make the difficult decision to actually leave the hotel and all its charms. Old Dulikhel, with its narrow lanes, temples and merchant houses, will spark your imagination. You might come across Tibetan herders who have come down from the high plateaus for Dashain, to celebrate Rama’s victory, merchants from India or pilgrims and more.
Optional extra - Meditation at Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery.

Transfer to Kathmandu airport and flight home.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Kathmandu - Visit to a thangka school

A thangka is a cotton or silk scroll painted with a religious motif: mystical symbols, often including the wheel of life, deities and eminent lamas. Varying in size, function and style, thangkas are an essential part of Himalayan art. Important monasteries have a tangka wall, and the display of the most significant of these paintings on it gives rise to veritable celebrations. As the school in Bhaktapur allows visits, we take the opportunity (accompanied by a private guide).
Optional - half-day

Dulikhel - Meditation at Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery

Located at the top of a hill in the village of Namobuddha, in Tamang country, this Tibetan Buddhist monastery was founded in 1978. Today, it is home to nearly 250 monks. The legend that explains its existence evokes the universal compassion of Buddha and his spirit of sacrifice. The establishment serves as a school and university for future monks. A 30-minute walk leads to the monastery itself. We arrive early in the morning, at the time of the puja, which is an offering of gratitude to Buddha. Visit the main chapel. Then your guide on the path to enlightenment will choose a spot in the garden to lead an introductory meditation session.
Optional - Half-day
