Itinerary highlights

  • Get stuck in and embark on a foodie journey through southern Sweden: a tempting and restorative adventure
  • An elegant cottage, restaurant-hotel, farm beside an art centre, a treetop nest in the forest: your accommodations are intimate and discreet, whispered among insiders
  • Your tables and meals are reserved throughout, along with moments of relaxation and exploration - it’s all taken care of
  • Direct flights, carbon absorption, concierge service, personalised recommendations: the extra Voyageurs touch.
In the collective imagination, Sweden is associated with dense forests threaded with lakes, where a few rickety jetties stretch out, mooring kayaks and wood-fired saunas. A postcard image that may evoke Dalarna or Lapland first, but which is also very much alive further south, in Skåne and Småland. In fact, Småland's slogan is “Sweden for real” - an appealing promise. The southern reaches of this vast region borrow a milder climate from Central Europe; brightly coloured beach huts and technicolour sunsets from the North Sea; and the very low-salinity waters and holiday traditions from the Baltic Sea. Majestic deer and dense forests are very much present, alongside cattle, orchards and vineyards. All of this provides local chefs with a remarkable palette of ingredients, which they sometimes prepare in the purest, most respectful way possible, and at other times combine to create surprise and maybe a touch of magic. From tempting food halls to fragrant cafés, from rustic tables to Michelin-starred gems, from committed farms to casual food stalls, Swedish cuisine is far more varied, accessible and surprising than one might expect.

Your trip

For once, it is via neighbouring Denmark that you reach Skåne. The striking Øresund Bridge rises from the artificial island of Peberholm and crosses the Baltic Sea, with Copenhagen receding in the rear-view mirror, before delivering you into Sweden and Malmö. First half-timbered houses, first sea air, first culinary explorations - then you take the road to the opposite side of Skåne. At the edge of harbour villages with cobbled lanes and charming little squares lined with timber-framed houses, the Scanian countryside stretches out with its miles of sandy beaches and gently rolling landscapes. Not far from Löderup and Simrishamn, you savour Sweden at its most rooted, both in spirit and on the plate. The properties that host you draw deeply on land, sea and seasons, always with the utmost respect for produce, to offer their guests memorable moments suspended in time - as well as deeply restorative nights. Venturing further inland, towards Knislinge, you'll encounter a Swedish outlier. A multi-faceted estate combining hotel, restaurant, historic château, organic dairy farm and an art centre adjoining a sculpture park. Quite the programme! Further north still, Småland becomes the setting for a very different experience, immersive and hushed. Near Holsbybrunn, your final retreat quite literally lifts you above it all. Perched among the trees, fire crackling in the stove and steam rising from your mug, you contemplate the majestic forest, replaying the pleasures of the journey. We wanted those pleasures to be many; selecting intimate accommodation and adding key experiences to your itinerary, as well as booking tables or meals at our favourite restaurants. For anything we cannot plan ahead - sudden ideas or minor setbacks - you have the contact details of our local concierge. Available at any time, and working closely with your travel specialist, they can adjust your trip even when you're already there. Salmon, of course, in all its forms - especially marinated (gravlax), served with a mustard-and-dill sauce (hovmästarsås) or baked into a pudding (laxpudding); herring, marinated (sill), spiced or fermented (surströmming); the shrimp sandwich (räksmörgås), which is actually a slice of rye bread topped with hard-boiled egg, lettuce, tomato and cucumber, served with dill cream and fish roe; smörgås in the broader sense, generous open sandwiches piled high with toppings - while smörgåsbord refers to a hot-and-cold buffet, often excellent value, featuring many Swedish specialities (fish roe, meatballs, sausages, cheeses, and more); and vegetarian variations featuring beetroot, asparagus or wild mushrooms, especially chanterelles and porcini; game, almost always served with sauce; forest fruits - lingonberries, cranberries, blueberries, redcurrants and other untranslatable berries - to be picked straight from the bush or enjoyed in sauces, jams or juices, hot or cold; a freshly baked kanelbullar (cinnamon and cardamom bun); and coffee - or rather the coffee break, the traditional fika, a ritual that everyone is happy to join.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

High-speed train journey between Copenhagen and Malmö.
Not to be missed at lunchtime - The covered markets often set the pace of a city. This is the case with Saluhall, a former 19th-century warehouse bought by a local family and fully renovated to become the gourmet heart of the neighbourhood. Here, you can shop or enjoy an on-the-go bite - fish from the island of Ven, Korean street food, wood-fired pizzas, fresh goat’s milk yoghurt or cardamom buns with connoisseur-level coffee. It’s a great way to get started!
You’ll then settle in for the night near the train station. The hotel is housed in an impressive modern building on the waterfront, halfway between the historic city and modern Malmö - both are a pleasure to explore. Below, you’ll find the harbour and the ocean. The rooms feature an elegant, pared-back Scandinavian design and large floor-to-ceiling windows. On the rooftop, the Japanese-inspiration restaurant is a favourite with locals. This is also where the generous breakfast is served, best enjoyed on the terrace in fine weather while taking in the view.
In the evening - Your table is reserved at one of our favourite spots in Malmö.

Optional - Malmö with a private guide.
You’ll pick up your rental car and drive towards the southeast of Scania. On the way, you can stop in Ystad, a charming little port town with cobbled streets, delightful squares, sun-kissed terraces and pretty pastel-coloured half-timbered medieval houses. At the edge of the village, the Scanian countryside stretches out with its kilometres of sandy beaches and rolling landscapes.
You’ll spend the night at an accommodation deeply connected to the land - or rather, to its land.  You’ll feel right at home here in the cottage-on-the-farm vibe. On the long dining room table, you’ll find a rustic bouquet and a few traditional pastries, still warm. Through the large windows, you’ll see the lush countryside all around. Delicacy lies in the details and the ever-present natural elements. The rooms in this former school building have been thoughtfully designed and furnished with the highest quality materials. In the evening, under the veranda or in the garden, guests happily enjoy a few nostalgic treats: wood-fired pizza and delicious homemade ice cream.

You’ll spend a few more hours at the accommodation and its bucolic surroundings before setting off again to quickly reach the coast and the small village of  Simrishamn.  Facing the Baltic, it is centred around a pleasant marina that comes alive in the warmer months, and a small town centre reminiscent of Ystad or Lund, with its half-timbered houses and other colourful homes with their flower borders. The atmosphere is peaceful; people wander from café terraces to pretty boutiques.
You’ll settle in for the night at an exceptionally refined accommodation, both in terms of the rooms and what’s on your plate - and what a setting! Nestled on a small hill overlooking the sea and surrounded by fields, the place describes itself as “a restaurant with rooms”. The establishment stands out for its meticulous décor, attention to detail and professionalism. The few rooms and suites are spread over two floors and overlook the fields or the pretty kitchen garden, with the sea in the distance. They feature a sleek design and state-of-the-art amenities, without sacrificing comfort. Breakfast is by appointment only, and for good reason: it is served at the table and showcases local produce and regional specialities. In the evening, the two restaurant tables stand out for their creativity, carefully prepared dishes, and well-balanced flavours. Please note: while the Michelin-starred restaurant is often fully booked, its annex is far from just a consolation prize. It’s a truly unique experience.
Already included - your three-course dinner in the bistro annex of your accommodation, with 100% local and seasonal cuisine.
Optional - Dinner at the two Michelin-starred restaurant, offering an experience based on seasonal cuisine rooted in Scandinavian traditions, along with local flora and fauna.

After a breakfast in the same culinary spirit as last night’s dinner - a real treat - we’ll head north, gradually leaving the coast behind to venture deeper into the Scanian countryside. - Worth seeing along the way - Kivik and its orchards.  On the Scanian east coast, as you approach Kivik, apple orchards stretch for kilometres around. The small charming coastal village is also known for its delicately sweet cider. Just outside the village, the country’s first fruit farm, Kiviks Musteri (1888), welcomes visitors to its cider house (Äpplets Hus, the Apple House) and its lush gardens filled with apples and pears - more than 70 varieties showing every shade of red and green. A café is set up outdoors during fine weather, while the craft shop also serves as a grocery store where locals come to stock up on cider, juice, jams and other treats.
Not far from Knislinge, you’ll settle in for the night at a multi-purpose estate. On site: a hotel, a restaurant, a historic (private) château, a farm (one of the largest organic dairy farms in Northern Europe) and an art centre adjoining a sculpture park. That's quite a programme! All the rooms are grouped together in the same building, which also has a lovely living room. The interiors are sleek and well-kept - you’ll feel at ease straight away.
Already planned - Your dinner at the restaurant of the estate, which showcases produce from the neighbouring farm, vegetables from local growers, and harvests from the forest.
Optional - Flavours of the farm.

Not to be missed - The sculpture park of the estate. To say the least, you wouldn’t expect to find such a place in the middle of the Swedish countryside. Initiated by Marika Wachtmeister in 1987, the park features more than 70 contemporary art works - sculptures as well as visual and sound installations - created by renowned international artists such as Yoko Ono and Marina Abramovic, which are scattered throughout the beech forest surrounding the castle.
Continuing north, you’ll leave the bucolic landscapes of Skåne behind and head towards the dense forests and sparkling lakes of Småland. The roads wind through beautiful landscapes and sometimes lead to farmland or picturesque small towns, such as Holsbybrunn. You’ll spend two nights in a new, exceptional haven - family-run, with meaningful plans and a spirit of sharing. The cabins are perched in the trees. They are discreet and well-kept, with wood stoves and panoramic windows. The main building was constructed with wood damaged in the 2014 Västmanland fire; guests are warmly welcomed here on arrival and come here for their meals. And the restaurant is an integral part of the experience, both for the cosy atmosphere of the main dining room and for the homemade cuisine inspired by the forest and local produce. On sunny days, guests are happy to settle at the outdoor tables to extend their immersion in nature.
Already included - your two dinners at the refuge’s restaurant.

On the dining table, there are flowers from the garden, cheese from the farm and grandmother’s plum jam. The day begins under the best possible conditions. It can continue into the surrounding forest, by foot or by electric bike, alone or with a guide, to soak up the stories of these trees and the people who once lived there. You can also reach the calm waters of nearby Lake Vâgen. A natural haven, perfect for disconnecting and feeling free, to be explored by boat or kayak. You can extend your culinary experience by joining an outdoors cooking workshop, perhaps centred around the delicious kanelbullar, a cinnamon bun enjoyed at any time of day, often with coffee during the traditional fika.
Scheduled - In any case, we have already booked a private Nordic bath session for you in theforest.  Relax, boost your blood circulation, or care for your skin: the Nordic bath offers many benefits.

Head due west to reach Göteborg. You’ll return the rental car at the airport, then take a direct flight back.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Malmö in private

Malmö is the spearhead of a dynamic and prosperous province, Skåne. This welcoming city proudly showcases its multicultural identity as a symbol of cross-border diversity. While Sweden’s third-largest city shines with creative boldness, it does not forget its roots, proudly displaying streets lined with medieval houses and its Renaissance castle, the oldest in Scandinavia. It's also a green, forward-looking city, with a university renowned for its environmental research and the sustainable waterfront district of Västra Hamnen.

Flavours from the farm

The estate hosting you near Knislinge combines two activities: a farm and a forestry operation, both run sustainably and organically, certified and focused on the production of milk, beef, fodder, arable crops and root vegetables. The farm is even one of the earliest organic milk producers in Northern Europe. In the company of the owner or the manager, you tour the estate, discuss organic farming practices and enjoy a tasting of cheeses made from milk produced on site.

With a few extra days…

Copenhagen - Between the Danish capital and southern Sweden, there is just one bridge (and what a bridge). Before crossing it, we strongly recommend spending a few days in Copenhagen. The city resonates across all creative fields - urban planning, fashion, fine arts, design and cuisine - making it one of Europe’s most stimulating capitals. It's a colourful, food-focused introduction that sets the tone for the rest of this pleasure-driven journey.
Gothenburg - Like in Copenhagen, Scandinavian cuisine remains the guiding thread for your stay. Swedish Gothenburg fishes in the same waters and contributes wholeheartedly to the renewal. Experience a lively, youthful, dynamic and industrious port - yet also proud of its heritage. Stops along the way - cafés, food trucks, shops and galleries - set the pace for your stay. Evenings are easily spent in the company of Gothenburg’s new creative generation, at the counter of a natural wine bar or in a fashionable microbrewery.
