100% customisable travel idea
Sweden - Stockholm - Dalarna
100% customisable for you
As soon as you arrive at the airport, you’ll board the Arlanda Express to reach the centre of Stockholm. You’ll stay for four nights in the Norrmalm district, the most vibrant area of the capital. Your hotel is a place of contrasts, where the urban concrete of the lobby meets the natural wood of the bar. You’ll find an outdoor spirit in the heart of the city. A huge hammock and swinging chairs invite you to relax, while bikes, longboards and kayaks are available to explore the city differently or to escape the urban hustle and bustle. In your room: bedside tables shaped like logs, hanging lamps and a cosy window nook - perfect for a good read. The restaurant - focused on wood-fired flavours - offers creative interpretations of international cuisine, while the bar invites guests to sip cocktails that showcase honey, freshly pressed fruit and local spirits.
Scheduled - Stockholm by bicycle. With a guide, the whole family will get on their bikes to set off and explore the city. Stockholm brings ever more futuristic urban design to the heart of omnipresent nature. The Swedish capital, nestled between the calm waters of Lake Mälaren and the waves of the Baltic Sea, spreads across no fewer than 14 islands, linked by 57 bridges. Cycling lets you move quickly from one place to another and stop at important sites along the way. On your itinerary: the historic district of Gamla Stan with its colourful houses and narrow streets; Södermalm (Söder to locals) - trendy, alternative and artistic; and finally the island of Kungsholmen, a residential area home to the city hall, where it’s easy to mingle with locals in parks and outdoors cinemas.
Already in your pocket - Your ferry tickets to reach the island of Grinda. Just under two hours by boat, this island, edged with rocks and hidden little beaches, where dense pine forests spread around charming red wooden houses, conjures up postcard-perfect Sweden. An ideal destination to recharge on a day trip and, why not, enjoy a refreshing summer swim! The youngest are often the most daring when it comes to this.
Optional - The Stockholm archipelago by kayak.
To experience - Free day on Djurgården island. Once reserved as a hunting ground for the elite by King Erik XIV, the island has gradually opened to the public. Today, it is the greenest part of the city and a popular family destination, home to many attractions such as the Skansen outdoors museum, the ABBA Museum, the Vasa Museum - which houses the famous 17th-century warship that tragically sank on its maiden voyage - and Gröna Lund, all surrounded by the Royal National City Park.
Already arranged - Your tickets for the Skansen outdoor museum. Here, you’ll immerse yourself in Sweden’s living history by discovering how Swedes once lived in tune with the seasons - through their customs, traditions, work and festivities. The museum features traditional buildings from across the country - some of the oldest date back to the 14th century - gardens, a rose garden and even the Stockholm Zoo. A captivating journey through centuries of history delights visitors of all ages.
Optional - Walking safari to meet Scandinavia’s iconic wildlife.
You’ll pick up your vehicle, then drive to Falun.
Scheduled - The Falun Copper Museum and Mine. After discovering the impressive quarry, wearing helmets and raincoats, the whole group descends 67 metres (220 feet) underground for an immersive exploration of the galleries, vast halls and deep shafts that bear witness to the lives of miners in the 17th century.
Next, you’ll continue on to Tällberg, on the shore of Lake Siljan. You’ll spend three nights in accommodation with walls painted in Falun red. A charming romantic living area, a rustic dining room and cosy bedrooms create a very welcoming setting. The rooms may be adorned with printed fabrics in shades of white, ivory and pink; or feature more subdued tones of grey and blue. They are all perfectly comfortable. A fireplace brings the incomparable atmosphere of a wood fire to some of them. The chef is a master and offers a contemporary, brilliant take on Swedish cuisine. The spa and sauna encourage physical and mental relaxation for guests. Billiards and darts test your dexterity.
All Swedes know Tällberg, a typical village in Dalarna, one of Sweden’s most tradition-rich regions. Set on a gentle slope leading down to the lake, it consists of wooden houses surrounded by vegetable gardens and orchards. These evoke times past and a life in harmony with nature. Times that could also be harsh and demanding. However, walking here now feels like being inside a Carl Larsson watercolour. The reddish hues of sunset linger in the memory. In the mood for a beach? Rättvik, for example, lies a little northeast of Tällberg. And at the end of June, Midsommar, the summer solstice (usually between 19 and 25 June), is celebrated here with joyful dancing around large flower-adorned maypoles.
Scheduled - “Waffle hike”. You’ll meet up with Lotta, a botany and nature enthusiast, for a fun and tasty hike through the forest. For four hours, she’ll take you off the beaten path. Take the time to appreciate the majestic trees and connect with the nature around you. Halfway through, everyone will take a break under a natural shelter, with delicious waffles cooked over a campfire you have lit yourself. This experience is enriched with valuable information about the surrounding flora, along with games and challenges outdoors, offering a moment to share that is as educational as it is entertaining for children and adults.
You won’t want to miss - Village of Nusnäs, birthplace of the Dala horse, the painted wooden horse that has become the emblem of Dalarna. Each piece is meticulously hand-carved from a single block of wood, then decorated with traditional floral motifs inspired by old folk paintings. The tradition of making these horses endures in this charming village, preserving an age-old artisanal heritage. The Nils Olsson workshop welcomes visitors, who can join in painting their own horse and leave with an authentic Swedish souvenir.
You won’t want to miss - Naturum Dalarna, a visitor centre perched atop Björkberget mountain in the village of Siljansnäs, just 15 km (9 miles) northwest of Leksand. From up there, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the surroundings and captivating exhibition on the nature of Dalarna. You can learn about the fascinating history of Lake Siljan, created by a meteorite impact.
Also worth seeing - the village of Mora, where the home of artist Anders Zorn has been turned into a museum. Well, not so changed after all: it has not changed much since the death in 1920 of the painter of water and women. The Viking hall, where he used to welcome friends and acquaintances, still has an imposing look. And his paintings have a strength that blends well with the county’s landscapes.
You’ll drive to Stockholm airport, return the vehicle, then fly home.
