Off the coast of Ecuador After Quito, the Galápagos from island to island

Ecuador - Quito - Galápagos

The Galápagos myth

From $6900 to $8800 per person for 12 days Price depends on departure city, season, accomodation types and selected activities

Itinerary highlights

  • Stop over on three Galápagos Islands, play explorer in the wild, and encounter giant tortoises
  • To begin with, spend a few days in beautiful Quito, colonial and baroque, decrypted by a private guide
  • Already planned on the archipelago: a day of diving around Isabela, the lava tunnels of Cabo Rosa and a bike ride
  • Carbon absorption, private transfers, on-site Concierge service, mobile app and our recommendations: the extra Voyageurs touch.
A thousand kilometres (620 miles) off the Ecuadorian coast, the Galápagos belong both to our imagination (the famous tortoise, the iguanas…) and to our intellect (Darwin understood certain things there about the world as it is). Nature reveals itself here on a grand scale - generous and multifaceted. And there’s no need to give up everything to enjoy it; all it takes is a little moderation and discretion. Miraculously protected by their isolation, the Galápagos teach adaptation of species and, in this sense, speak of the future. The gateway to this archipelago - elevated to celebrity status by Commander Cousteau - is ajar for you, for the duration of your journey. First stop: San Cristóbal, the island capital. You connect with the pristine beauty of the place: its craters and lava tunnels, trees and birds. The interpretation centre introduces us to the history, climate and current issues of the archipelago. A short hop by plane (what a view!) takes you to Isabela, the largest of the islands. Here, exploration continues from the ocean - boating, snorkelling, and discovering lava tunnels where many bird colonies live. To finish, head for Santa Cruz by boat. On the island, visitors greet the giant tortoises of the El Chato reserve and the exceptionally rich marine life - colourful fish, as well as tintorera sharks and manta rays - that live nearby, around the wild scatterlings of Santa Fé. Just a short distance away, Seymour Island is the realm of frigatebirds and the famous blue-footed boobies.

Quito as a prelude

Before meeting these wonderful people and experiencing with our own eyes this purest vision of earthly paradise, a few days of acclimatisation are planned in Quito, one of the best-preserved colonial capitals in South America. But also the highest perched and the first to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At an altitude of 2,850 metres (9,350 feet), on the slopes of the Pichincha Volcano, it stretches for kilometres or miles in an impressive panorama. The summit of the Pichincha cable car (4,000 m or 13,123 ft) opens onto snow-capped volcanoes, skyscrapers, and the historical centre with its colourful walls and uneven rooftops. From the Andes to the Pacific, Ecuador reveals itself in contrasts.

Your journey

On landing in Quito, a vehicle takes you to your first hotel. Rooms are located in the historical centre, within an intimate setting; the ideal location for strolling through the winding streets and squares dotted with Baroque churches. A private guide accompanies you and shares the secrets of the city - their city - with you. A thousand kilometres (620 miles) from there, you then fly to the Galápagos for a three-part exploration. From one island to another, you sometimes travel by air, sometimes by sea, and, once there, private transfers take over. The pace is carefully planned, with a balance between guided tours and independent exploration. Your island accommodation combines preferential locations with comfort and a pleasant atmosphere. You now have the contact details of our concierge on site, who is available at any time to guide you and respond to any last-minute wishes.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

When you arrive, you have a private transfer to the historic centre where you’ll stay two nights in a colonial house dating from 1925. Completely restored by artists from the renowned Escuela Quiteña, it is filled with light. The owners have created three bedrooms around a lovely inner courtyard, where it’s very pleasant to sit and have a drink or read after exploring the city. The interiors are understated and elegant, with light tones set off by beautiful parquet flooring and wooden furniture. On the rooftop, a small area to relax has been set up, offering unbeatable views of the city.

Included - Private tour of the colonial capital. Quito Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has changed so very little that at times you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time to the era of the Royal Audience. The checkerboard layout is preserved, with vibrant colours brightening up the rows of single-storey houses, adorned with Spanish balconies and interspersed here and there with imposing civil and religious buildings. Examples include the cathedral, Carondelet Palace and the Church of San Francisco, which houses the Virgin of Quito, venerated throughout the northern Andes. As for the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús (Church of the Society of Jesus, 1605-1765), it shows who held influence at the time - those able to employ the best artists from the Quito School. Along the way, make sure you taste the local drink, canelazo: a hot blend of aguardiente (alcoholic spirit), cane sugar, water and cinnamon.

You have a private transfer to the airport and flight to San Cristóbal Island, gateway to the Galápagos Islands. Another private transfer to your accommodation for two nights in a white villa overlooking the port and the bay. This simple, unpretentious yet comfortable property has large picture windows throughout to let in lots of light. Guests especially appreciate the warm welcome from the owner and the terrace, which is ideal for relaxation and contemplation.

The capital island of the Galápagos, San Cristóbal, is the most eastern isle in the archipelago and home to a large colony of sea lions. Near Playa Mann, the interpretation centre traces the geological and natural history of the island group. With its beaches, secret coves and hiking trails, San Cristóbal lends itself beautifully to walking. So, put on a pair of comfortable shoes and set out to explore wherever you wish!
Optional -Snorkelling at the Leon Dormido Rock (or Kicker Rock); a full day with a private guide for an in-depth exploration of the island.

You have a private transfer to the airport, then a flight to Isabela. Every image of this memorable hop over untouched lands of unreal beauty is etched into our memory. Once on the island, you have a private transfer to your hotel for three nights, which combines simplicity, comfort and a pleasant atmosphere. Set on the edge of a beautiful sandy beach, it extends into a large garden planted with palm trees, flowers and native plants. At lunchtime, head up to the top floor of the building for a beautiful view of the ocean from the restaurant. Afterwards, unwind with a short siesta in one of the hammocks.
Already included - Isabela with a local guide . Follow in the footsteps of a local resident for an intimate discovery of Isabela along the water. Nothing is really planned in advance; your guide for the day will accommodate your wishes, interests and whatever’s happening at the time. Along the way, they will share valuable information about the archipelago and some well-kept secrets of Isabela.

Included - Full day sailing around the Cabo Rosa lava tunnels. Many colonies of birds nest here, such as masked boobies, blue-footed boobies and pelicans, as well as sea lions. The landscapes, shaped by the sudden cooling of lava flows as they meet the sea, are breathtaking. After cruising through this living picture, put on your mask and snorkel to slip beneath the surface and encounter the underwater wildlife.

At your disposal - bicycles for the day. Cycling is the perfect way to discover Isabela on your own. Several trails cross the island, alternating between paved paths and dirt or sand tracks. They are well-marked and lead to villages or beaches, crossing paths with a multitude of animals and spectacular scenery along the way. Why not stop off at the breeding and conservation centre for the island’s endemic giant tortoises?
Optional -Private hike around Sierra Negra and Chico volcanoes.

You have a private transfer to the port and a sail over to Santa Cruz Island. Another private transfer takes you to your final accommodation, where you’ll stay for three nights. Your hotel has many appealing features, starting with the bright, spacious bedrooms; some open onto a balcony with views of the bay. From the property’s façade to its public areas, everything is understated and elegant, with the freshness of white and the charm of wood. The swimming pool offers the perfect escape during the hottest part of the day, and the jacuzzi is perfect for relaxing later on, in the afternoon or evening.

Included - North Seymour Island. Located north of Baltra Island, this islet is named after the British Royal Navy officer, George Francis Seymour. It’s a small, uninhabited volcanic island, covered with dry vegetation - opuntia (prickly pear cactus) thrive here. Land iguanas, blue-footed boobies and frigatebirds nest here by the hundred. Back on Santa Crux, Las Bachas on the north coast is one of the most remarkable sites in the archipelago for its rich wildlife, both on land and in the sea. Appreciate it fully throughout the day with your passionate guide, not only on foot, but also in the water, as a snorkelling session is planned.

From the dock in Puerto Ayora, it’s just a few minutes by boat to Las Grietas - a saltwater channel ideal for swimming and snorkelling in complete tranquillity. To avoid busy times, it’s best to visit early in the morning. The path that runs alongside the water is lined with cacti and leads to Los Alemanes beach, then on to a salt flat. Along the way, there is a lovely view of the whole site. In the afternoon, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station to learn about ongoing research into the natural environment and its conservation. Then stop at Tortuga Bay to relax and observe the marine life. Or go for a walk in the highlands of Santa Cruz, among lava tunnels, forests and El Chato Ranch, a giant tortoise reserve.

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Guayaquil, then return international flight. Overnight flight, arrive the next day.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

The highlands of San Cristóbal, Puerto Chino beach and La Lobería

The least visited island of the archipelago (despite its status as the capital) still holds many secrets. Accompanied by a guide, you first reach El Junco Lagoon, a majestic lake set in the crater of an ancient volcano and encircled by lush vegetation. After visiting the breeding and conservation centre for the island’s endemic giant tortoises, enjoy lunch on the charming Puerto Chino beach. In the bay, surrounded by volcanic rocks and mangroves, Palo Santo trees with their divine scent also take root. Then we set off to encounter the largest sea lion colony in the archipelago, which has made its home on La Lobería beach. A spectacle as visual as it is auditory!

Snorkelling at the Leon Dormido Rock site

A few kilometres off the coast of San Cristóbal lie two massive rocky outcrops that plunge steeply into the ocean, separated by a channel about 15 metres (49 feet) wide. Between the peaks, multicoloured fish, rays, and hammerhead or whitetip sharks move about peacefully. Lunch is planned on board the yacht.

Hiking around the Sierra Negra volcanoes

This volcano features an impressive crater measuring 9 by 10 km (5.6 by 6.2 miles) in diameter, making it the second largest active crater in the world. You approach the volcano on foot from the entrance to the park, giving you the opportunity to enjoy stunning panoramic views of Isabela Island and its lush natural environment. An unexpected landscape after leaving the arid coastal region. As you continue along this path, the landscape shifts from black to red; lava flows lie side by side and form a hilly, magical trail. Finches, warblers and mockingbirds accompany this moonlit hike. Halfway through, depending on your wishes, you can opt for an easy walk along the Sierra Negra caldera or a more challenging hike leading to the domes of the Chico Volcano.

Bartolomé Island and Sombrero Chino Island

Bartolomé Island presents almost lunar landscapes swept by Pacific winds, unfolding in tuff cones, scoria formations, and black volcanic sand… Sombrero Chino, one of the smallest islets in the archipelago, takes on the appearance of a pointed hat and shelters, both on its land and in the waters of the channel connecting it to Santiago, an especially abundant and diverse array of wildlife. Among the creatures you may not have encountered yet during your journey are penguins and whitetip reef sharks, which can be seen while diving, as well as multicoloured crabs (Zayapa) on the rocks. You will set out to discover these two treasures in the best possible conditions, aboard a comfortable yacht equipped with a covered rooftop deck so you will not miss any of the spectacular views, and accompanied by a passionate nature guide. A chef is also present on board an

Santa Cruz by bicycle

Morning departure for the east of the island. Scheduled: exploration of the iconic lava tunnels and a bike ride through the lush Cerro Mesa Reserve, where you’ll encounter an array of residents, with giant tortoises topping the list. We climb at our own pace, soaking up the lush greenery, all the way to the highest point of the reserve, and then savour the reward: a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire archipelago, which allows us to better understand its geography. After a comforting picnic, the tour leader guides us towards the superb white sands of Garrapatero Beach. As the bay is sheltered from strong currents, you can swim or go snorkelling there, under the slightly curious gaze of pelicans and frigatebirds.
