Itinerary highlights

  • Take to the skies in a Cessna over Africa’s great plains and experience an exclusive side of Tanzania in Katavi and Mahale parks.
  • Overlooking the water, opening onto the plains or set on the sand: your lodges are ideally located for observation in comfort.
  • Tarangire with a driver-guide, two safaris per day in Katavi, encounters with chimpanzees in Mahale: already included.
  • Direct flights, carbon absorption, welcome at the airport, Concierge: the extra Voyageurs touch
Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara: there’s no denying it, northern Tanzania draws some remarkable visitors. The east of the country is just as enticing, attracting travellers with the pristine sands of Zanzibar." The downside is that tourists have caught on and now arrive in large numbers, ready to be amazed. All the more reason to embark on a different kind of westward rush towards the untouched lands of Katavi and Mahale. Tucked away in the western side of the country, far from the usual tourist routes, these national parks still preserve some of their old-world charm. Wild lands that drew explorers and inspired writers. This was where British doctor David Livingstone died after a life of adventures on the African continent which made him a Victorian legend. The American novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs, is said to have drawn his inspiration from the lush vegetation of the Mahale Mountains i when creating the iconic character Tarzan, an English aristocrat raised by great apes. A century later, these western kingdoms remain fiercely protected and welcome only a few hundred privileged visitors each year. Touch down in style at the foot of Kilimanjaro and transfer to Arusha. We take advantage of being in the north-east to travel 150 km to Tarangire National Park with its savannah and baobab forests and herds of elephants by the dozen. Here, dawn always lives up to its promise. We wouldn’t miss the spectacle of animals awakening in this setting or anything. The landscape transforms from a bluish haze to shades of pink and orange, sparklingly brilliant until the sun sets. You hold your breath, listen for every sound, interpret every crack. Your first safaris always hold a special place and a unique thrill. With each new sighting - lion, cheetah, giraffe or wild dog - a thrill runs through the group. Once these codes have been mastered, and as if completing a rite of passage, you take to the skies in a Cessna. Flight over a cuckoo’s nest . Experience the thrill of landing on a dirt airstrip. We are so far west of East Africa that we are almost at its centre. “At the heart of things”, as others might say. Katavi National Park sits nestled in a branch of the Rift Valley. Over the course of a single year, between the rainy season and the dry season, the site changes completely. The plain stirs and fades, only to fill with water once again. All the animals respond to this call: just follow the river to find crocodiles and hippos frolicking, and zebras, buffalo and antelopes drinking. So close, yet just far enough to warrant another trip in a single-engine plane, Mahale Mountains National Park, on the shores of Lake Manyara, spans the mountains that share its name. The tropical forests that cover their slopes have a mirage-like quality. The canopy rings with the cries of hundreds of chimpanzees. The species - the second most closely related to humans - was wise to settle here. Observers follow them for longer or shorter stretches, depending on where these playful primates roam. You approach them on tiptoe, heart pounding, taking care not to startle them.

Your journey to the heart of Africa

This journey takes you to remote lands. In fact you will need a Cessna to take you there. And for the plane to take off, it must be full. Clearly, this itinerary is all about adventure. This means a few precautions are in order. You can count on us for that. You will arrive in the country on a direct international flight, withassistance on arrival. The rest of the journey is just as seamless, as your private vehicles and other internal transfers are already booked. Just hop on board! In Tarangire Park, a driver-guide takes the lead, or rather, drives the 4x4. The vehicle is as comfortable as can be, kept cool, with a selection of drinks to quench your thirst. At every stop, the rangers escorting you know their stuff. They always deliver, and sometimes exceed expectations when it comes to wildlife spotting. There is no shortage of opportunities, with two safaris per day in Tarangire and Katavi parks. In Mahale, you have the privilege of joining small teams for chimpanzee trekkingYour lodges follow the same philosophy - maximising opportunities for wildlife encounters, and moments of wonder - thanks to their carefully chosen locations. They can be perched above the water (the grail of safari) in Tarangire, opening onto the Katisunga plains in Katavi, or set on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, just steps from the park entrance in Mahale. Finally, throughout your adventure, you benefit from full range of Voyageurs du Monde services: concierge service, 24/7 assistance, and a GPS-assisted app. Tanzania is extraordinary, and this journey promises to be just as remarkable.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Meet and greet upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and assistance with your transfer. Transfer by private vehicle with driver to your hotel in Arusha, the third largest city in Tanzania. Stay one night on a 20-hectare coffee plantation in accommodation with views of Mount Meru. There are 30 bungalows, which are quite spacious, feature a wood decor, and are beautifully maintained. The public areas include extremely well-tended gardens, with a charming swimming pool at the centre. Further on, a fire pit provides the ideal ambiance for guests to share stories of past and future adventures. In the kitchen, the chef prepares delicious meals, and breakfast is served with live entertainment provided by a few mischievous monkeys.

Meet your driver-guide who will accompany you for the next three days, and set off for Tarangire National Park. Stay for two nights in a semi-permanent camp overlooking the river - a dream spot for wildlife watching. Set in the shade of centuries-old baobab trees, the tents feature a simple yet comfortable style. And what a view! Reclined on your rattan sun lounger, you can see elephants, Mount Meru and perhaps even Kilimanjaro from the comfort of your terrace. The rest of the camp overlooks the vast plains of the national park, Lake Manyara, the Great Rift Valley and Ngorongoro. The stay is therefore panoramic. Enjoy lingering in the cosy public lounge, crowned with a charming thatched roof, built high up and open to the four winds.
Already included - first safari in Tarangire. The exceptional setting comprises the savannah dotted with termite mounds, acacias and baobabs. At the heart of it all is the river that gave the park its name. It forms an oasis of life during the dry season, inevitably attracting a wonderful variety of animals. The main trail runs alongside the waterway and crosses the property from north to south. Animals come down here to cool off during the day, then return to the hills in the evening. You know where to go.

On the itinerary - a second day safari. Located on the migration route of many animals, Tarangire National Park can guarantee that visitors won’t leave without seeing any animals and experiencing the associated emotions. Your driver-guide is also a great help with this. So, what's on the agenda? Look out for tree-climbing lions, plains zebras, Masai giraffes, impalas, blue wildebeest, beisa oryx, cheetahs, wild dogs, Waller’s gazelles, kudus, buffalo, bushpigs, Cape elands, waterbucks… and elephants of course! Tarangire is home to one of the largest colonies in the world. As for birdlife, there are no fewer than 550 different species, including hoopoes, kingfishers, ostriches, marabou storks, vultures and masked lovebirds. Two safaris in a day will be needed to take it all in. The first one starts at dawn and finishes before lunch. Then enjoy a short break before setting off again in the late afternoon.

Return journey to Arusha, return your hire vehicle, then take a 3.5-hour flight aboard a small Cessna plane, to Katavi. The shadow of the single-engine plane glides over the plains below. The silhouette of the elephant, so impressive yesterday, is now just a dot on the ground - the adventure can begin (again)! Far, far from the crowded trails, Katavi National Park ensures a more authentic safari experience in Tanzanian regions that have kept much of their untamed character.
Stay for two nights in the park. Set on an elevation, your lodge offers breathtaking views over the Katisunga Plains. At the centre of the property stands the main lodge: a lovely semi-open wooden structure topped with a large thatched roof. Similarly roofed, and erected on wooden decking are ten tents, each with their own washroom and outdoor area. Meals are served on the spacious panoramic terrace, accompanied by South African wines or the famous Tanzanian beer. The quality of the dishes is remarkable, given the site's remote location. The two daily safaris (one in the morning and the other at the end of the day) inevitably set the pace of the stay. On return, you are welcomed like royalty with a refreshing towel and fresh fruit juice. Animal encounters don’t end when you step out of the 4x4 - wildlife actively patrols the area around the lodge: at dinner, a giraffe stretches its neck to nibble on a tree; at night, the heavy footsteps of an elephant echo through the darkness; in the early morning, an impala frolics in the dew.

Included - morning safari. In southwest Tanzania, Katavi National Park lies on a high floodplain in a branch of the Great Rift Valley. Spread over 4,800 km² (1,853 square miles), this nature reserve rubs shoulders with the illustrious Lake Tanganyika and the Mahale Mountains. Once the dry season is over, the landscape is dotted with large bodies of water relished by hippos and crocodiles. Zebras, buffalo, giraffes and roan antelopes come to drink. Despite this abundance of wildlife, the park remains superbly preserved thanks to its remote location, making the safari experience all the more unique.
Also included - evening safari. As the sun sets on the horizon, a new cohort awakens. Animals emerge silently from their burrows, nests and dens. A flash of white reveals a zebra; a hornbill stirs in the branches. The warthog, meanwhile, scans its surroundings nervously. This is the leopard’s favourite time to hunt. If its tawny, rosette-speckled coat is visible, it’s because the leopard has decided so. Hyenas are generally not far away. The actors in this performance know their roles in a play that is performed every evening. As a spectator, you observe without intervening, naturally.

A quick Cessna flight takes you to Mahale Mountains National Park, set on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The peaks that gave the site its name tower over the water’s surface, the tallest among them (Nkungwe) reaching nearly 2,500 metres (8,200 feet). On the slopes of these peaks, lush tropical forests thrive. This is where a few hundred chimpanzees have settled. They are among the last of their species in Tanzania. However, the park’s wildlife is far from limited to this biological relative of ours; it includes many other ambassadors of the local fauna, on land and in the sea, that you will be eager to meet.
Your camp is erected on a lovely stretch of golden sand, with the dramatic mountain skyline behind. Raised on a platform and topped with a charming thatched roof, the tents are both spacious and comfortable, with first-class washing facilities. Everything you need is here, even things you might not expect in this beautiful but secluded part of the country, such as electricity 24/7, hot and cold water, and the internet. Each unit has its own terrace that opens onto the lake and beach. This is where guests meet for an aperitif around a welcoming fire with their feet in the sand. The restaurant is of high quality - how could it be otherwise, with staff who seem to have been handpicked for their outstanding professionalism and an unfailingly cheerful attitude? And while trekking with chimpanzees remains the highlight of the stay, there are plenty other activities to enjoy on site, such as relaxing on the sand, fishing, or heading out in a kayak or boat.

On your agenda - meeting with the chimpanzees. The ranger leads the way: their intimate knowledge of the terrain and its inhabitants allows them to locate the region’s star primates in this maze of vegetation that makes up their natural habitat. Come, quiet, look: the chimpanzees are here. They go about their day without worrying about visitors, as long as you remain discreet. Watch them feed, play, squabble, groom each other and laze around - just living their lives, basically. How curious it is to find yourself face to face with this primate whose gestures, expressions, and gaze so closely resemble humans (sharing 95% of our DNA).
Our suggestion for the rest of the day: swimming in Lake Tanganyika. The second largest of the African Great Lakes (almost 33,000 km² \ 12,700 square miles), Lake Tananyika is one of the few on the continent where you can swim. The water is calm, the temperature is very pleasant (around 25°C \ 77°F all year round), and there are even a few beaches along the shore. A few hours after meeting the chimpanzees, the activity feels all the more delightful for being unexpected.

A new flight aboard a single-engine tourist plane to return to Arusha (5 hours and 30 minutes). Upon arrival, private transfer to your original Tanzanian hotel, located 5 minutes from the domestic airport.
Arranged for you - your room available until your international flight in the evening.
A few hours later, private transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport (1 hour and 30 minutes) and direct international return flight. Night spent on the plane, arrival the next day.
