The American West
100% customisable for you
On arrival, pick up your rental car and settle in for three nights at a modern hotel in the heart of Westwood. The warm atmosphere and original decor are the work of renowned designer Cheryl Rowley. A truly appealing first venue!
In Los Angeles, everything challenges your habits: the sheer scale, the impossibility of exploring it on foot - greater Los Angeles stretches along beaches that run for more than 62 miles (100 km). The beauty of the city is rooted in its geography: a coastal plain, hills at the foot of which you find Hollywood - its boulevard running along the hills - and Beverly Hills, then the ocean… All of this is bathed in warm sunshine for much of the year.
Optional - Your tickets to Universal Studios; a private surf lesson at Venice Beach.
From one legend to another, only one road will take you there. A journey that takes about five hours, with potential stops in Barstow on the legendary Route 66 or the ghost town of Calico. After crossing the Mojave Desert, the first casinos and neon lights come into view on the horizon. Settle in for a two-night stay in a hotel rooted in the extravagance of Las Vegas, right in the heart of the Strip. With its mall packed with shops, vast swimming pools and spacious rooms, it meets the needs of contemporary travellers to a tee.
Founded by a brilliant gangster, Las Vegas is undoubtedly the only city in the world built entirely on illusion. You soon get caught up in it. Here, the main activity between mall-hopping sessions is strolling along the famous Strip, moving from one hotel to another, watching the endless parade of a diverse crowd, each person vying for elegance or eccentricity.
Optional - Tickets to Cirque du Soleil’s KÀ.
Drive to Mount Carmel, at the entrance to Zion National Park (3 hours away).
Worth seeing along the way - Valley of Fire State Park, the oldest state park in Nevada, takes its name from the fiery colours that cover its rock formations. It also features arches, stone columns and domes with sometimes unusual shapes. At the entrance to St. George, Snow Canyon State Park offers breathtaking scenery: black stretches of lava flows give the place a unique atmosphere.
Settle in for two nights in a comfortable hotel: wooden bungalows are scattered across a lush green meadow, contrasting with the surrounding ochre rocks.
Famous for its deep canyons carved by the Virgin River and its tributaries, Zion is a lush park where towering mountains, sandstone cliffs, narrow canyons, forests of maples and cottonwoods, and arches reach towards the sky. People love to enjoy the beneficial coolness of the Virgin River there.
Scheduled - A hike with your feet in the water in the Narrows, one of the narrowest sections of the Virgin River - a real adventure! You reach the departure point by taking the shuttles, which play commentary so you can learn more about the Park’s history, geology, wildlife and plant life. Because of the slippery terrain, rocks and current, suitable equipment rental is included so you can enjoy the experience in the best conditions. You can choose a hike of any length to suit your abilities, turning back whenever you wish to retrace your steps.
We take the scenic road that winds between the rocks and seems to ripple beneath the cliffs towards Bryce Canyon National Park, admired for its blazing panoramas and hundreds of hoodoos. Continue driving to Page and check in for the night at a comfortable hotel overlooking Lake Powell, the largest artificial lake in the United States. 186 miles (300 km) long, with 96 canyons and 1,961 miles (3,155 km) of coastline, it is one of the American West’s iconic symbols.
Drive towards Monument Valley (about 3 hours away), passing through the Hopi and Navajo reservations. As the miles, or kilometres roll by, monoliths and buttes in orange hues appear in the distance, in a setting straight out of the westerns from our childhood. Stay for the night in one of the Park’s only hotels, a former trading post established in the 1920s, which appears in many westerns - and for good reason: its first owner, Harry Goulding, introduced Monument Valley to John Ford to attract visitors to this remote desert area. Thus, in 1939, the director presented Stagecoach to the public, with John Wayne in the leading role.
Optional - Monument Valley with a private guide.
Already planned - Antelope Canyon, on foot. This is one of the most photographed places in the American West, and for good reason: this narrow gorge carved by erosion and wind is almost surreal. A unique experience that, all the same, should be shared with the crowd who come to admire this site of natural beauty. This tour with a guide will delight both children and adults.
Drive to the Grand Canyon, an exceptional geological phenomenon, and one of the most impressive sights on the planet. You approach the 275 mile (443 kilometre) long and 19 mile (30 kilometre) wide fault on foot - a glass platform lets visitors safely step up to the edge of the precipice - its vastness is astonishing. Settle in for the night in Tusayan. Your accommodation consists of small buildings scattered among the pines of the Coconino Plateau, arranged in the classic motel style typical of the US Route. But as soon as you enter the lobby, and thanks to its level of amenities, you realise that this is the high-end version of its kind.
Optional - A helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon, undoubtedly the best way to appreciate the sheer scale of the place.
Drive to Phoenix. The pine forests gradually give way to stretches of cacti and the desert landscapes typical of Arizona.
A must-see along the way - Sedona sits in the heart of “red rock country”, surrounded by immense red and gold pillars, gigantic mesas, buttes and mineral columns. The city owes its growth to these striking landforms - in the past, they inspired Western screenwriters, and today they draw a New Age community seeking mystical energy and spiritual well-being. Jerome, a ghost town of the Far West, is also well worth a visit.
In Phoenix, spend the night at a family resort with large swimming pools. Guaranteed sunshine and a gentle end to your trip in an exceptional setting.
Drive to Los Angeles airport and return the rental car. International return flight. Night spent on the plane, arrival the next day.
