Nearby, Urho Kekkonen National Park - the second largest protected park in Finland - is home to an impressive range of landscapes: primary forests, heaths and gorges, along with marshes and mountains covered in a thick blanket of snow. A vast expanse of untouched landscapes to explore at your own pace, on snowshoes or during some leisurely cross-country skiing - two of the most popular Nordic activities in Lapland. Snow sports enthusiasts can cover longer distances by snowmobile, enjoying incomparable thrills. Increasingly popular, fat biking is also perfectly suited to the wild expanses of Lapland, especially as there are so many trails. A different mount and new sensations as the sure, steady steps of Finnish horses sink into the silence of the snow. When it turns to ice and covers the white lakes with a thick layer of frost, patient fishers practice the ancestral Native American techniques of ice fishing. Another must: learning to handle a sled, to fully appreciate the majestic silence of the snowy plains, with only the sound of the sled gliding along and the breath of the Huskies.
