Upon arrival in Bilbao, settle in for two nights at a hotel just a short walk from the Guggenheim Museum, the emblem of the city. Its architecture draws inspiration from the works of Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida - a unique style that is expressed through shapes, materials, colours and details. You’ll soon be struck by the vast hall and the glass lifts, which offer a lovely view.
Already planned: your entry tickets for the Guggenheim Museum. While the exhibitions change regularly, some works remain on permanent display. The museum’s collection is among the leading institutions of contemporary art. You can admire works by Jeff Koons, Yves Klein, Eduardo Chillida, Louise Bourgeois and many others - enough to spark the curiosity of adults and children alike.
Not to be missed - Ribera Market. This is among the largest food markets in Europe. Its proximity to the historic centre makes visiting easy. You step into an Art Deco-style building where stalls and pintxo bars are lined up. The main restaurant offers a wide selection of tapas and Basque specialities, such as kokotxas (hake cheeks with garlic and olive oil) and txipirones (cuttlefish served with ink sauce).
Drive to Llanes, in Asturias. Stay for two nights in a comfortable apartment, spacious enough for the whole family. Its balcony overlooks the Mijares valley, with the Sierra del Cuera in the background. The swimming pool offers the perfect setting for a refreshing swim - ideal at the end of the day. To extend the experience, head to the restaurant, which skilfully serves dishes that blend tradition and modernity.
In your itinerary: fishing in Llanes port. The whole family playfully dives into the maritime origins of Llanes with a private guide. You will discover how fishing works in the region and how fish are sold at the markets. To conclude this activity, the children are invited to take part in a hands-on workshop.
Drive to Pontevedra, nestled at the end of the estuary of the same name. Stay for two nights in a new, spacious and elegant apartment. You’ll quickly feel at home here, before diving into the sun-drenched swimming pool.
Things to see and do - Enjoy the absence of vehicles inside the village; admire the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor and the old town; count the Gothic houses along the narrow streets; spend a day visiting the nearby megalithic monuments or the nearby beaches…
Optional extra - Arousa Island by bike.
Cross the border and continue along the road to Porto. Stay for three nights in a modern-design apartment. The interiors are dominated by blue, reminiscent of the azulejos. Make the most of the mild temperatures on the balcony. The fitted kitchen lets you make yourself at home. Its central location is another advantage: you are just a short walk away from the main heritage sites.
Optional extra - Porto’s historic centre by bike.
In your itinerary - Porto in the footsteps of a local. Accompanied by a local who knows the city like the back of their hand, you set off on foot to explore Porto’s popular and contemporary sides, as you so desire. The meeting happens naturally and nothing is planned in advance - the walk is improvised according to everyone’s preferences. A delightful way to live like a family from Porto - all together!
Already planned - your tickets for the Lello Bookshop. This is described as one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world and is said to have even inspired the author of Harry Potter. A true local institution, the bookstore was founded in 1906. Inside, the neo-Gothic architecture features a magnificent glass roof that echoes an impressive carved wooden staircase. And the shelves reach up to the ceiling!
Drive to Sabrosa and stay for two nights in the heart of a vast vineyard - a true invitation to experience the Douro art of living. Inside the walls, different styles mix with natural materials like stone and wood. The whole place exudes incredible charm, and you feel perfectly at ease there.
In your itinerary - a private cruise on the Douro in a rabelo boat. The rabelo, a boat used for river transport, carried wine barrels from the upstream wine regions to the production cities: Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The walk lets you enjoy different viewpoints over Pinhão, the surrounding vineyards and their quintas. The route takes you through one of the most beautiful stretches of the river, hidden from the coastal roads, all the way to Quinta da Romaneira.
Optional extra - The Douro through the ages.
Return to the Spanish side: drive to Salamanca and settle in for two nights in a former convent turned charming hotel. It enjoys a privileged location in the heart of the historic centre. The spacious, very comfortable rooms overlook the cathedral, the “Patio de los Olivas” - the olive patio - or the cloister. A special mention is merited for the attentive welcome and the quality of the breakfast, served in the garden on fine days.
Things to see and do - Compare the architecture of the new and old cathedrals; meet up at the Plaza Mayor; picture yourself as a student at one of the oldest universities in Europe; photograph the Casa de las Conchas, a house covered in shells; wander through the Art Nouveau and Art Deco museum; sample the local chorizo and wine…
Optional extra - Salamanca by bike, in private.
Drive to Burgos and check in for a final night in the historic centre. The building housing the hotel stands against a bell tower. The rooms show a discreet elegance. The much-appreciated hotel restaurant highlights traditional Spanish cuisine.
The artistic heritage of this stop along the Way of St James is considerable. It is immediately obvious even on the shortest walk in the city. Don’t forget to step inside Saint Mary’s Cathedral to admire the interior of this monumental Gothic masterpiece.
Make the return journey in your own vehicle.
