Canary Island duo Tenerife and Lush and Little-known La Gomera

Spain - Canary Islands - Tenerife - La Gomera

Two gems in the Canary Islands

From $2800 to $3600 per person for 11 days Price depends on departure city, season, accomodation types and selected activities

Itinerary highlights

  • Combining the gentle charm and diversity of Tenerife with the unspoiled island of La Gomera, travelling by car with GPS to explore at your own pace
  • Your varied accommodation - quinta, parador, hotel - all charming and well located, and the support of your local on site contact person
  • The natural pools in Garachico, the magnificent parks of Teide and Garajonay, and the two private hikes already in your itinerary
  • Direct flights, carbon absorption, concierge service, personalised recommendations: the extra Voyageurs touch.
This Canary Island duo starts in Tenerife, a remarkable microcosm of the archipelago’s landscapes. Relax for a few days on the "large island", staying in the heart of Garachico, a small, peaceful village where people come in search of the tranquillity of the pueblos of yesteryear, and the unspoilt coastline. Get to know the landscape dotted with forests and volcanoes, the desert scenery and small authentic fishing villages. The beaches are either white or black sand, while the petrified lava flows echo the natural pools. Pure and natural: this sums up La Gomera, one of the smallest Canary Islands and the second stop-off on this journey. More sinuous than its sister Tenerife, and more rural too, it remains protected from the influx of visitors, no doubt due to its small number of beaches. It is still a natural treasure that is well worth the detour. Wonderfully peaceful, wild flora and fauna of remarkable beauty can be seen here. Enjoy hikes through the verdant Garajonay National Park in the shade of millennia-old, dense forests, along ravines that plunge towards the sea, in valleys covered with green palm trees, and on the shores of black sand beaches with crystal-clear waters. The island makes you prone to daydreaming too, especially when you learn that it was from here that Christopher Columbus set sail across the Atlantic in 1492. And to top it all off, it is on this small island that you will find the best cuisine in the Canary Islands.

Your journey

Just a few hours on a direct flight for a complete change of scenery. You head straight to the north of Tenerife: to meet our on site Concierge, the most Canarian of women, who is passionate about the archipelago and gladly shares her top recommendations, her favourite walks, and all the essential tips to enjoy these two islands to the full. Ferries connect the islands, so you can take your rental car on board. Far from impersonal resorts, your accommodation has been chosen both for its discreetness and its location. In Tenerife, you stay at a charming quinta not far from natural volcanic pools, then at a beautiful hotel right in the centre of La Laguna, the colourful jewel of the archipelago. Between the two, on La Gomera, you find refuge in a small traditional parador overlooking the port of San Sebastian, undoubtedly the most beautiful balcony facing nearby Mount Teide. Several highlights are already on your itinerary : an initial hike through Teide National Park, the highest point in both the archipelago and Spain and a second a hike in the northern part of La Gomera. And, in between, an introduction to silbo, the whistled language still occasionally used by the inhabitants of La Gomera. You are free to add other activities to your itinerary, depending on the season and what you want to do. Together with your travel specialist, our on site concierge can even change your trip once you are there.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Upon arrival, collect your rental car and drive northwest across the island to Garachico. Stay for five nights in the heart of the village, facing the church, in one of the town’s most beautiful houses. The former residence of a marquess that has been restored with respect for its history and a love of stone, it is arranged around a pretty tree-lined patio with a marble fountain. The property also has a rooftop terrace with a stunning view of the sea and mountains, and several intimate little corners where you can unwind.

Already planned - Meeting with France, our on-site Concierge at your hotel. This is an opportunity for her to give you an overview of the island and the archipelago - the weather, distances, road quality, recommended itineraries, landscapes, history, geology, hiking trails, and more. An encounter that also lets you share a slice of life, discuss daily life in the Canaries, and pick up plenty of advice for the rest of your journey.
Overlooking the Atlantic, the small fishing village of Garachico was once the island’s main port. Peaceful, it has incredible charm with its churches, convents, elegant mansions, leafy patios, beaches and coves. Everything was rebuilt after the 1706 eruption, which completely destroyed the town.
Things to do and experience - Take a night-time stroll through the cobbled streets of Garachico; swim in one of the natural volcanic pools near the village; visit La Orotava for its rich architectural heritage spanning more than 500 years; wander through a banana plantation; relax on the beaches and switch between white and black sand; in the evening, enjoy the catch of the day, puchero (Canarian stew) and island wines on a terrace…

In your itinerary - A short hike in Teide National Park. Its landscape is dominated by Spain’s highest volcano, Mount Teide, which last erupted in 1798. The volcanic cones and lava flows create an extraordinary palette of colours and shapes, and foster exceptional floral diversity. The park is also the natural habitat of several species of reptiles (such as the Gallotia galloti lizard) and many birds - Egyptian vulture, Eurasian sparrowhawk, buzzard, and red kite.
Also planned - exploration of the Cueva del Viento. More than just a cave, this is the fifth longest network of volcanic tubes (or lava tunnels) in the world: 18 km (11 miles). Formed 27,000 years ago, the cave stands out for its unique landforms. The underground wildlife is also abundant here: 190 common species, mostly invertebrates. The tour combines volcanological, geological, environmental and historic commentary, and an underground descent in natural darkness and silence.
Optional extra - Kayaking along the Los Gigantes cliffs at the end of the day.

In the morning, drive to the port of Los Cristianos and take a 1-hour ferry crossing to reach La Gomera, in the west of the Canary Islands. A quick route takes you up to the hills of San Sebastián, then you settle in for three nights in an establishment that combines authenticity, charm and comfort. This traditional Parador boasts many advantages, as it overlooks the harbour and reveals unimpeded views of Mount Teide on the neighbouring island. Its restaurant is also among the most renowned in La Gomera. You can enjoy the flower-filled garden or, depending on the weather, the swimming pool overlooking the ocean before sitting down to sample the local cuisine.
In your itinerary - In the afternoon, you have a meeting at the hotel with our local guide. They give you an overview of the island, discuss your itinerary, and offer some useful advice and recommendations. At the end of this information session, a silbo teacher introduces you to the basics of this whistled language, which the island’s inhabitants still use to communicate from one village to another.

In your itinerary - Exploration of the north of La Gomera. La Gomera is full of charming places: volcanic mountains, villages with traditional architecture, iconic buildings linked to Christopher Columbus and vast expanses of forest. You begin exploring its northern part on foot, from Hermigua to Abrante, passing through the prettiest village on the island, Agulo - nicknamed “the heart of La Gomera”. Next comes the Juego de Bolas National Park interpretation centre. During the day, you explore both must-see sites and places off the beaten path, all while enjoying the ever-present nature. Lunch is planned at a restaurant known for its wood-fired cuisine.
Optional extra - A day between land and sea; hiking and a boat trip.

Return crossing to Tenerife, then drive to San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Stay for two nights in the historic centre, at a beautiful and especially comfortable hotel. The establishment skilfully blends old-world charm with contemporary elegance. Vintage furniture and printed wallpaper add a retro touch. The room features a palette of earthy colours, accented with touches of blue. You feel at ease in these spacious and comfortable areas, such as the entrance hall, the rooftop terrace with its panoramic view and large swimming pool that takes pride of place, or the garden. In the restaurant, guests savour traditional Canarian cuisine, often reimagined in innovative ways.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna - more commonly known as La Laguna - is undoubtedly the most iconic city on Tenerife. Its colourful façades, cobbled streets, typical old buildings and historic monuments have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. In addition to its natural beauty, La Laguna is home to the oldest university in the Canary Islands and offers a lively, family-friendly atmosphere at all hours of the day… and night.
Not to be missed: the botanical garden of Puerto de la Cruz.
Founded at the end of the 18th century by order of King Carlos III of Spain, the Jardín Botánico was originally intended to gather tropical plant species - mainly from the Spanish colonies - in Tenerife, in order to acclimatise them before their transport to Europe - especially to the royal gardens of Madrid, such as those at the Palace of Aranjuez. Also known as the Jardín de Acclimatación, or Acclimatisation Garden, this green haven now covers 20,000 m² (4.9 acres) of tropical gardens and includes a section dedicated to the scientific study of the Canary Islands’ endemic flora. A true institution, El Botánico (as it is affectionately called) is listed as a “Site of Cultural Interest” in the “Historic Gardens” category. You’ll appreciate the exceptional diversity of trees and plants along the shaded paths, as well as the peaceful atmosphere.
Optional extra - Hike in the Anaga mountains.

Drive to the airport, return the rental car, and take your direct international flight home.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

The cliffs of Los Gigantes by kayak

Skimming the waters of the Atlantic, at the foot of 600 metres (1,970 feet) of spectacularly illuminated volcanic cliffs, in the late afternoon: a unique experience on the southwest coast of Tenerife. Beside the Los Gigantes cliffs, to be more precise. These high cliffs are dotted with natural coves sculpted by the famous barrancos (large ravines) opening into the sea. A striking and memorable spectacle to be enjoyed in the company of a local specialist.

A day on the land and sea on La Gomera

La Gomera is among the smallest islands in the archipelago, after El Hierro. Since 2011, it has been designated a "Biosphere Reserve" due to the quality of its terrestrial and marine ecosystems. At its centre lies a national park that protects a rich and diverse array of flora and fauna - including species that have already disappeared elsewhere in the world. The island reveals its treasures on a boat trip designed to explore the wild coastline and marine wildlife (with its many whales), departing from the small port of Valle Gran Rey. This is followed by a hike through the laurel forest in the Garajonay National Park.

Hiking in the Anaga Massif

For this three-hour hike, you follow a private guide and explore one of the most beautiful laurel forests in the archipelago. You learn all about the laurisilva, the unique ecosystem shared by the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. This lush vegetation thrives thanks to the moisture brought by the mists generated by the cool trade winds. It consists of a relict forest formed in the Tertiary era that survived the great ice ages.
