Itinerary highlights

  • A culinary and sensory journey to the heart of the Cretan terroir, between the sea, the mountains and the hinterland
  • Your picturesque, intimate accommodation, in harmony with its surroundings - and its renowned restaurants
  • A gourmet stroll in Chania; a tour of olive oil production; multiple tastings: it's all planned!
  • Carbon absorption, private guides, our recommendations, Concierge service, restaurant reservations: the extra Voyageurs touch
Dip your finger in olive oil, your lips in wine, your feet in turquoise water; in short, immerse yourself in the Cretan way of life: what a delicious idea that can easily be made into a trip. A road trip, to be exact, but not one that swallows up the miles in one go, but rather one that takes the time to digest the information and appreciate the scenery. It takes the form of a large feast in three stages, during which you can sample all the facets of the island's terroir. We start in the west, in the mountains covered with scrubland, chestnut trees and ancient olive trees - almost every village claims to have the oldest specimen on the island! On the horizon, the sea sparkles under the generous sun, which has contributed to the fertility of the land and the richness of the terroir for centuries. Next, we head north to a sheltered green valley where orchards and vineyards rub shoulders with Minoan palaces and ancient cities. Our last stop is in the south of the island, on the slopes of the Asterousia mountain range, a land of vineyards and olive groves. The entire trip takes you through fields and farms where the basic ingredients of Cretan cuisine are grown, a cuisine renowned for being both one of the best in the world and also one of the simplest. QED (that which was to be demonstrated). You will sit down at the tables of many taverns, both rustic and sophisticated; you will have spontaneous picnics; you will taste oils, dakos (bread), graviera and myzithra (cheeses), khokhlioi snails, skioufichta (pasta) and kaltsounia (small cream cakes); you will sip raki and local wines. You will take full advantage of the islanders’ philoxenia (sense of hospitality). You will fall asleep on the sand and walk in the cool morning air to the nearby monastery. And you will pray to Hermes to preserve all this.

Your accommodation, ambassadors of Cretan agritourism.

More than just hotels, your accommodation will be small hamlets of luminous stone where the owners' love for traditional Cretan architecture and hospitality is evident. They are also projects in their own right, which take their natural environment into account, blend in discreetly and do their utmost to preserve it. Finally, they offer meals as well as accommodation, with the contents of the dishes being treated with the utmost care - and often sourced from the vegetable garden or a neighbouring farm. Everywhere you look, there are lovely spots to curl up for a while - hammocks, terraces, small shaded areas, poolside. Finally, even if you are staying inland, the sea is never far away and you can always decide on a whim to go for a dip.

Your trip

Direct flights, a reliable rental car (suitable for the small roads of the hinterland), a satnav and, above all, the time you need to experience, savour, retrace your steps and take a detour - the recipe is well mastered. To guide you on a daily basis, there is a mobile app full of restaurants to try. In addition to the activities organised by your hosts to bring you into contact with local life, we have added two delightful highlights to your itinerary, for which you will be accompanied by guides: a gourmet walk in Chania and a tour of the green gold of Crete - olive oil - in a village near Rethymno. The rest is up to you. And if any minor setbacks or sudden desires arise along the way, you can count on the assistance of our on-site Concierge.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Upon arrival, pick up your rental car and drive to the mountains in the west of the island. On the last few miles, a track winds its way through oleanders, scrubland, olive trees and numerous chestnut trees, leading you to a dry stone village that is perfectly integrated into its surroundings at an altitude of 500 metres. You will stay for three nights in one of the stone and wood houses built on the ruins of old farmhouses, preserving the architectural characteristics of the region. Outside, there are countless intimate corners where you can read, meditate or even take a nap in a hammock. The tavern, which is very well known in the area, serves the best the island has to offer, with a bold and skilful twist. In the evening, as daylight fades, candlelight takes over, making the place even more magical.

From the perch on which your accommodation is built, it is easy to assess your playground. North-western Crete is a rugged region, yet the horizon offers glimpses of sparkling sea and delightful sandy beaches. Tourism has so far snubbed these harsh but fertile lands. This relative isolation works in the area's favour as it remains unspoilt and offers pristine landscapes.
See and do - Hike along the surrounding peaks; walk on the pink sand of Elafonissi beach; sway gently in a hammock; learn the secrets of Cretan cuisine from the hotel chef; dive into the crystal-clear waters of Kedrodasos.
Optional - Day trip and lunch in the heart of the hinterland.

On your itinerary - Private gourmet tour of Chania.. Chania is not only the gateway to the island, but it is also a warm and lively city. Accompanied by a guide, you’ll wander through the pedestrian streets lined with historic sites and colourful shops. During your tour, you can stop to chat and sample some local specialities, including loukoumades (small honey-coated doughnuts), bougatsa (a pastry made with filo pastry, cream and semolina) or olives, herbs and spices.
Optional - Private picnic by the sea.

Drive to the north of the island. On the way, be sure to stop near the village of Fournes, at the foot of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), to stretch your legs along the paths of the superb botanical garden. Here, there are nearly 20 hectares of fruit trees from all over the world, as well as vines and medicinal plants. The presence of a lake attracts water birds. You may also come across peacocks strutting along the paths as if they owned the place. There is an excellent tavern on site that transforms vegetables, fresh herbs and fruit into delicious traditional Cretan dishes that can be enjoyed while taking in the exceptional view.
Stay for three nights in the heart of an estate where five pretty stone houses that are divided into apartments welcome guests on the hillside, facing the sea. The surroundings consist of olive trees, orchards and vineyards as far as the eye can see. This hamlet is filled with the sweet scent of the terroir, olive oil and orange blossom. Grape harvesting, olive picking, bread baking, cooking... Timeless farm work still occupies everyday life, and yours too if you wish.
Optional - A day in the footsteps of a shepherd.

Surrounded by thousands of fragrant trees, you’ll enjoy a special location between the valley, the mountains and the sea, which can be seen just a few miles away. The surrounding area is full of historical curiosities, such as Zominthos and its great Minoan palace, the archaeological remains of the ancient city of Eleftherna and the Arkadi Monastery. There is enough to keep you busy for the day.
Optional - Visit to a vineyard, tastings and cooking workshop.

On your itinerary - A private tour to discover the secrets of olive oil.. Head to a village near Rethymno to unravel the mysteries of the Mediterranean's green gold: olive oil. Here you will learn all about the history of the olive tree and its fruit, from prehistoric times to the present day. It is a retrospective accompanied by several oils and a 100% local feast of mezzes, cheese and traditional bread.
See and do - In Rethymno, stroll around admiring the Venetian fortress, loggia and port, Egyptian lighthouse and Ottoman mosques, and watch the masters of filo pastry at work in their workshop and perhaps leave with some delicious pastries under your arm.

Head south to the island and stay for two nights in a hamlet of traditional stone houses. It is an isolated location in direct contact with nature. Here, you are far from the crowds and close to the real things. In the centre of the hamlet, the village square serves as a place to rest and socialise. And when the air cools, the fireplace and wood stove take over. The farm and vegetable garden supply the restaurant's kitchen, so the menu changes according to the seasons and harvests. The comfortable and well-equipped rooms are decorated in a charming rustic style.

Dominated by the 1,236-metre Mount Kofinas, you’ll find yourself on the slopes of the Asterousia massif, which is a wonderful balcony facing the intense blue of the Libyan Sea. The isolation of this region makes it a unique place on the island, where time seems to have slowed down. A national refuge during Turkish rule and a hippie haven in the 1970s, the surrounding area attracted lovers of discreet authenticity from very early on. Even religious figures left beautiful frescoes in the sanctuaries of the area.
See and do -
The archaeological sites of Phaistos and Agia Triada; take a cooking class at the hotel restaurant; participate in farm life; take a trip to the beach, less than two miles (three kilometres) away; relax by the pool.
Optional - Visit a vineyard and taste vintages with a private sommelier.

Drive to Heraklion, return the vehicle and take a direct international flight back.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

A private day trip and lunch in the countryside

Accompanied by a guide, you will explore the Cretan countryside and discover the local culture, traditions and way of life in the villages. Along the way, you will visit a museum dedicated to olive oil, housed in a former factory; a monastery with a three-century-old oil mill; as well as lush green forests, streams and beautiful old stones warmed by the sun. The day ends with a cooking workshop on a working farm, where produce from the vegetable garden is used to prepare dishes that you will then enjoy.

On the slopes of Mount Ida, you will spend a day living the life of a shepherd and his flock. The day begins at a traditional mountain hut where sheep are sheared and milked, cheese is made and raki is distilled, depending on the season. You will help the shepherd with his daily tasks, including gathering herbs that will be used to prepare lunch, which will include cheese and wine.

With a few extra days... Heraklion

By adding two nights to the trip, you can visit the archaeological site of Knossos near Heraklion, home to one of the most important Minoan palaces, whose columns, frescoes and friezes give an idea of the splendour of the building, whose golden age dates back more than 3,000 years. You can also take the opportunity to extend the wine route you started earlier and explore other vineyards.

With a few extra days… Naxos

White villages that reflect the Aegean sun, citrus orchards, old churches, vineyards, small ports where caiques dance, patient donkeys, castles and beaches caressed by crystal-clear waters, Naxos is the jewel of the Cyclades. In the town, the Venetian kastro and the Gate of Apollo are noble reminders of a long and eventful history. The ancient civilisations of the Cyclades and Mycenae provided most of the collections in the archaeological museum. If you go for a walk in the coastal plain and the hills, you will find agricultural landscapes where lemon trees fill the air with their fragrance. Vines are the least you would expect on an island where Dionysus is the patron god. You can get everywhere by bike or scooter. On the way back, you can drink ouzo while watching the sun cast its red and gold hues over the sea... You'll be surprised you're not Greek...
