Some places speak more deeply to the traveller's soul than others. The Equator and the Great Rift Valley are part of the mix. Kenya and this itinerary offer you a wide range of experiences. After landing in Nairobi, we head to Lake Nakuru in the Great Rift Valley (whose landscape was made famous by the Oscar-winning film Out of Africa). . African wildlife is present, and the scene is coming to life. The animals are astonishingly close. Sailing on Lake Nakuru is an unforgettable moment. Next, it will be Mount Kenya, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the highlight of the trip. The mountain’s stunning mineral slopes are cloaked in layers of majestic nature. The entire range is breathtakingly beautiful. Ol Pejeta and Lewa Downs are private reserves. They complement the major national parks, making Laikipia, in particular, the setting for a creative and diverse approach to the natural world. The traditional safari experience - Big Five and the like, specially equipped vehicle - is available here in excellent conditions, but other options let you explore with greater intimacy and a deeper understanding of the environment. This can be done on foot with hiking boots or on horseback This is a more participatory trip, so it’s no surprise that it appeals to younger generations.

Your trip

Three two-day stops give this trip a welcome balance and give you enough time to fully immerse yourself in each setting. The journeys are not too long, especially as there is plenty to see out of the window. Whether in a renovated cottage, charming farmhouse,or comfortable tent, you'll be well looked after. We have chosen your accommodations based on their location, relevance, the welcome extended to families, and that certain something that makes you feel you are in a special place. The swimming pools are a favourite with both adults and children. To travel from one stop to another, a car with a driver-guide is provided. And a short flight to round off the itinerary. The logistics are smooth and comfortable. The activities listed on your itinerary demonstrate that Kenya has far more to offer than classic safaris. While they are, of course, unmissable, hiking and horseback riding are an exhilarating complement. You experience either in the Lewa Downs savannah. Lake Nakuru, in turn, invites you to a water-based safari. As for the Ol Pejeta Reserve, it gives you the chance to observe huge rhinos, but also to address the delicate issue of their conservation. All of this can be experiences as a family, as long as the young are able to keep up. And if, along the way, an unexpected whim or a minor setback arises, you have the contact details of our on-site Concierge to assist you.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Night on board, arrival the next day.

Welcome and assistance with formalities. Meet your dedicated driver-guide and depart for Lake Nakuru National Park. Picnic lunch en route.
Optional, en route - Lake Naivasha and Crescent Island in private.
Check in for two nights on the park's southern edge. In a carefully tended garden, pretty thatched-roof cottages bloom. In front sits a smallporch. Guest rooms are comfortable and simply decorated with African colours and patterns. The sheer curtains dress the room like indoor clothing, and the shared spaces have the same vibe: the lounge, bar and restaurant offer the perfect opportunity to gather and unwind. It's smart, but nothing stiff. The cuisine is modern African - expertly achieved. A beautiful outdoor pool and massage services bring added well-being to your break.

In your itinerary - A naturalist cruise on Lake Nakuru. Pink flamingos and white pelicans are the stars of the lake - people come for them alone. But they are far from the only ones worthy of attention. The Goliath heron, hamerkop and African fish eagle may be less gregarious, but they are no less admirable. And then there are the mammals. Like the black rhino, Rothschild’s giraffe, waterbuck, warthog, lion and cheetah - to name just a few - and not forgetting the olive baboon. All have their moment at the water’s edge to drink. Your small boat is also an excellent vantage point. An English-speaking guide gives you useful information, and a selection of canapés is served.

Drive to Laikipia. Stay for two nights on a farm near Mount Kenya. Don't expect rustic, though: this is English countryside style adapted to Africa - thoughtfully designed spaces and comfort for enjoying life outdoors. The endless picture windows make the surrounding nature a key element of the décor (complemented by a range of Indian and Himalayan motifs). In the spacious lounge, you'll find a fireplace and a well-stocked library. The guest rooms are in keeping with the property as a whole. The restaurant serves international cuisine. Outside, you'll find a floral extravaganza, a vegetable garden that supplies the kitchen, a swimming pool, and horses from the estate passing by. Not to mention the views. In a setting like this, yoga feels like a natural choice.

In your itinerary - The northern white rhinos of Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, this reserve is engaged in a last-chance rescue operation for the northern white rhino. The reintroduction of four individuals from the Czech park of Dvur Králové has mobilised Kenyan and international institutions: the Leibniz Association, San Diego Zoo, Tiergarten Schönbrunn. The outcome is still uncertain, but scientists persevere. With an English-speaking guide, you enter the protected perimeter where these massive - and now extremely fragile - animals live. You also visit the reserve where their black cousins are present in significant numbers. Incidentally, both black and white rhinos are actually grey; they're distinguished by characteristics other than colour!
Optional -
Hike on Mount Kenya.

Drive to Lewa Downs Reserve - part of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Ol Pejeta’s sister park. After this somewhat green section, settle in for a two-night stay amid the ochre and russet shades of the savannah. Your accommodation also adopts the same palette - red ochre, fawn, beige - blending into the landscape. Tents are set on stone platforms and covered by a large thatched roof. When needed, the canvas can be lifted, placing you directly in contact with nature. Your private space is simply furnished and comfortable, with a solid-built shower room. International African cuisine and white tablecloths are found in the mess. A pool for travellers to unwind.

Already included - Horse riding. Horses are an ideal way to explore the downs, the gentle hills of Lewa. You're at the perfect height, away from the noise of traffic. And there’s no need to be an experienced rider to join the outing - the horses are kind to beginners. An instructor ensures the group stays on track. So, in addition to classic safaris in a modified vehicle, you’ll ride across a reserve home to many black rhinos (and white ones too, but of the southern subspecies), abundant Grevy’s zebras, elephants, the elegant sitatunga, ostriches and more. You’ll also enjoy a walking safari. Accompanied by a ranger, you move with stealth and precision. The smaller scope of action is compensated by the intensity of the experience and access to fauna and flora on a more modest scale, yet just as integral to the ecosystem. It’s a way of entering into the reasons and conditions of the giants: organisms shape one another regardless of size. It's a stimulating field lesson.

Transfer to Nairobi airport and direct flight home. Night on board, arrival the next day.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Lake Naivasha and Crescent Island

Between Nairobi and Lake Nakuru, stop-off at Lake Naivasha. For the first exploration: one hour by boat and two hours on foot. A boat trip on the water, of course, and a hike on Crescent Island, where the density of wildlife - wildebeest, hartebeest, zebras, impalas - is exceptional. Earlier, you will have observed birds, including cormorants, golden-breasted jacanas (which walk on water lilies), and osprey. And a great many hippos.
Optional - With a private guide.

Hiking on Mount Kenya

This striking mountain, a deep-red volcano, is carved by ancient glaciers. You will have seen it from your lodge. Today, you will follow the footsteps of Halford John Mackinder, the first person to reach the summit - in 1899 - and set off with a guide. Via the Sirimon Route, you will first reach Likii North Camp, at 4,000 metres. Breathtaking view of the peaks. The tour of the peaks in the afternoon. The day is full of surprises. The Afro-alpine zone offers a wonderful opportunity for plant spotting: senecios and fescue, everlasting flowers, buttercups and giant lobelias. Dendrosenecio keniodendron is endemic; the rock hyrax loves to eat Dendrosenecio keniensis when it is young and tender. The rock hyrax and Grimm’s duiker are the most prominent animals in this area. Elephants, bongos, giant forest hogs or green ibises do not venture this high. From the acacia savannah to its snow-covered slopes, Mount Kenya has eight distinct zones!
Optional.

With a few more days… On the beach at Chale Island

At the southern tip of Kenya, the private island of Chale is one of the country's best-kept secrets. Once discovered, it becomes a stunning beach extension of your trip. After mountains and savannahs, it's time for the Indian Ocean! And without disturbing the natural charm: colobus monkeys, green turtles or whale sharks add to the already abundant list of your sightings. Add to this bungalows over the water, perched on the rocks or nestled on the sand, along with water activities, fine dining, sea excursions, and a sense of being off the beaten track. here there is everything you need for an unforgettable beach holiday.
