When travelling in South Africa, at the far southern tip of the continent, you turn your back on the oceans and climb Table Mountain, shaped for a banquet of giants. You stay in Cape Town, that stretch of land advancing into the water like a frozen ship, and walk to the misleadingly named “Cape of Good Hope”. It was a Portuguese king, who had never been here, who renamed it, thinking of the riches beyond. A panoramic vision of infinity, sea and nothing but sea. Then you head inland, towards safari country, or on to Johannesburg, visiting the house where Gandhi once lived.

Why visit South Africa with Voyageurs du monde?

Two questions in one: why travel to South Africa and why travel with Voyageurs? To answer the first question, we would say the African space, the rainbow, the sharing of oceans, wine, Cape Town and Kruger Park. To answer the second, we would give the same answer, but with the addition of a vision. Because, through all our services, we present the country to you as it truly is – a genuine encounter. And, as every reality is somewhat greater than the idea we have of it, we offer you that extra touch of soul, the local friend, Gandhi’s Satyagraha House in Johannesburg – a place with a truly special atmosphere. And a collection of our recommendations tailored to your wishes.

Travel to South Africa by region

Cape Town & surroundings

A journey to Cape Town, South Africa’s Mother City. Nestled at the edge of the continent, at the foot of a spectacular promontory, the city faces the ocean and leisure. The Cape region is brimming with outdoor activities: strolls through Kirstenbosch Gardens, hiking at Silvermine Pass, to the summit of Table Mountain, or along the Cape Peninsula, which you can reach via the scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive. The wine route and its vineyards, established by the Dutch at the end of the 17th century; the wineries of Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl, which combine traditional Dutch architecture with noble European grape varieties: Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet. Touring the cellars by bike or sidecar, interspersed with a walk with cheetahs. Discover all of our travel inspiration for Cape Town and its surrounds.

Johannesburg & surroundings

Journey to Johannesburg. The districts: Houghton, Newtown, a former industrial area and now the city’s new cultural hub, extending all the way to Braamfontein, a student district bustling with art galleries. Buppies shopping in the Fashion District, until now stigmatised by its association with the poor neighbourhood of Hillbrow. This wave of modernity does not, however, sweep away Joburg’s historical dimension, which can be discovered by following in the footsteps of Gandhi, especially at the Satyagraha House, a residence restored by Voyageurs du Monde, or by tracing Mandela’s path in Soweto.

Kruger National Park & Blyde River Canyon

Travel to the Kruger Park, one of Africa’s largest wildlife reserves, with its baobab plains in the north and hills in the south, for off-road safaris. The Blyde River Canyon, a rift between the high Highveld (high plateau) and the low Lowveld (plain), is none other than the third largest canyon on the planet. A stop suspended 700 m (2,300 feet) above the riverbed. To clear your mind, take a dip in the natural pools of this region, perfumed by orange and tea plantations. Then, you continue on foot, by mountain bike, or by canoe, before picking up your dreams of freedom again in a hot-air balloon. Discover all of our travel offers to the Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon.
