A trip to Zimbabwe? In ChiShona, Zimbabwe means “great house of stone”. More than a house, Great Zimbabwe, whose impressive ruins still stand, was an entire city, construction of which began 400 years before our era. Immense, covering some seven square kilometres (3 square miles), it was the heart of the Monomotapa Empire, radiating hundreds of miles into what is now Mozambique. On the contrary, the country might just as well have been named Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “the smoke that thunders”, the name given by local people to Victoria Falls.
