And don’t imagine Astana’s skyscrapers have erased that nomadic culture – it is still there, transposed. However, in this open country, where Russians are still very present, modern developments are appearing everywhere and are welcomed. Nevertheless, all heritage is carefully preserved: the Dalmatian pelicans of Saryarka and the extraordinary mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasavi (1093–1166) in Turkestan are even UNESCO World Heritage listed. Although not listed, the powerful Charyn Canyon, the almost Alpine lake of Kolsai and the singing dunes of Altyn Emel are no less beautiful or spectacular.
