Itinerary highlights

  • Discover an incredible cultural richness, born from the meeting of Christian, Jewish and Islamic traditions.
  • Stroll through the old town of Mostar, now peaceful, restored and welcoming to travellers.
  • Take a dip at the foot of the Kravice Falls, the Victoria Falls of Herzegovina.
  • Travel through landscapes of great beauty that the forest dresses in intense colours.
We’ve heard about Bosnia on the television for years, but we still do not really know exactly where it is. Under Croatia’s arm. Along with Herzegovina, which is south of Bosnia. Both are now part of a federation and are recovering from a particularly cruel war. You usually visit people who are recovering. It is even recommended. Overall, they appear in better condition than we might have feared. Even though, here and there, there are scars.

That’s the impression a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina leaves. The country bears impressive scars, but equally impressive are the beauty of its landscapes and the cultural richness of cities where the Ottoman Empire left a strong mark (which Austria-Hungary under Franz Joseph modernised without erasing). While the meeting of East and West in the Balkans is a common topic in social conversations, it is also a reality that finds admirable expression in Sarajevo, Mostar or Blagaj. That alone is reason enough to go and see it. And architecture is not the only place where the reality of this encounter can be seen. You can start your meal, for example, with a cheese pastry (simica), continue with stuffed cabbage or Bosanski lonac (the Bosnian pot), finish with a slice of Sachertorte and a Turkish coffee, and you will have set the perfect tone for your visit to Bašcaršija, the old town of Sarajevo.

A long weekend in the Balkans

The journey unfolds in two stops, Sarajevo (Bosnia) and Mostar (Herzegovina), with two loops around each city. It offers a well-balanced overview of Bosnian reality in both its past and present. Guides and private drivers accompany you during transfers and tours. High-quality accommodations each tell the story of the country in their own way - Austro-Hungarian in Sarajevo, Turkish in Mostar.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Welcome by your guide, transfer and check-in for two nights just a stone's throw from Bascarsija. The hotel was built at the end of the 19th century in the Austro-Hungarian style. Numerous renovations have been carried out since then, and the décor alternates between southern Biedermeier style and contemporary lines. Excellent facilities, including indoor swimming pool, spa, Turkish bath, etc. The Café Viennois revives the imperial and royal tradition with its creamy cakes.
Already on your itinerary - Private tour of Sarajevo.. The Ashkenazi synagogue (Karel Parik, 1902), the Gazi Husrev-beg mosque (Sinan, 1530-31), the Catholic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (Josip Vancas, 1884-87) and the Seher Cehaja Bridge (1585-86) are among the iconic monuments you will visit. During the 1992-96 siege, the ‘tunnel of hope’ was dug under the city that it helped to supply.

Already on your itinerary - Drive to Kiseljak, where a famous mineral water is bottled, then on to Visoko. Although the Visoki Valley was the centre of medieval Bosnia, it was the Ottomans who developed Visoko. The ‘Bosnian pyramid’ is a curious example of crypto-archaeology as Visocica Hill, which overlooks Visoko, is said to be a remnant of the ancient Illyrian civilisation. Nothing proven, nor even plausible, but plenty of national pride and a beautiful view of the surrounding area. Lunch in Fojnica and visit to the Franciscan monastery of the Holy Spirit (17th century). Sultan Mehmed II (1432-81) allowed the Friars Minor to remain in Bosnia, and they became the champions of Catholicism in the region. Night in Sarajevo.

Drive to Herzegovina and Mostar. Stay for two nights in a museum hotel in the historic centre. The building is typical of Bosnian-Ottoman architecture and the decor partly reflects the traditional layout. The rooms are equipped with all the latest amenities, while still immersing guests in the nostalgic atmosphere of Bosnia of yesteryear.
Already on your itinerary - Discover the city with a private guide. A treasure trove of Ottoman architecture and a martyred city, Mostar is undergoing major restoration work. The Old Bridge (Stari Most, 16th century) over the Neretva River is not only a Bosnian emblem but also an international one (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). It is also an example of how architecture can be integrated into the landscape. Crossing it today to discover the picturesque beauty of the old bazaar, mosques, inns and shops that made up this large border town of the Sublime Porte is both enchanting and a privilege. Beautiful Secession buildings in the Austro-Hungarian part of the city.

Already on your itinerary - About six miles (ten kilometres) from Mostar, Blagaj is a little gem. Located at the source of the Buna River, the village combines Adriatic and Turkish architectural styles with great elegance and charm. The tekke (Sufi monastery, 16th century) is inseparable from Vrelo Bune and is a splendid example of how a site can be interpreted. Pocitelj and its 15th-century fortress add to the enchantment. And the Trebizat waterfalls at Kravice provide refreshment. In the afternoon, visit the Marian shrine of Medjugorje. The Catholic Church has not ruled on the reality of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in this village in the municipality of Citluk, but the movement of devotion is impressive. Night in Mostar.

Transfer to Sarajevo airport and return flight.
