Itinerary highlights

  • Staying at a stunning eco-lodge, with the Andaman Sea on the horizon: a rare find hidden in the Mergui Archipelago
  • The grand journey from Mandalay to Bagan, Inle Lake and Yangon to capture the essence of Myanmar
  • Yangon by night with an expat, lunch with the Intha people at Inle Lake, Bagan by scooter: it’s all on your itinerary
  • Concierge service, Wi-Fi, local mobile: travel the Voyageurs way
Imagine young girls with cheeks powdered with thanaka, elderly women smoking cheroots or chewing betel leaves, and regal looking men, dressed in long skirts tied at the waist. Imagine ancient pagodas where women and men of all ages count prayer beads among hundreds of Buddhas, coming and going, praying and meditating. Imagine the slender spires of the stupas and golden sunsets. Imagine canoes gliding across the vast waters of Inle Lake. And imagine a far-flung dot in the Andaman Sea, the white sand and crystal-clear water of the Mergui Archipelago.
As your journey unfolds, you visit the former capitals. Mandalay comes first, the last wooden capital, home to the country’s most well-known monasteries and still its main centre of learning. Legend has it that its construction was predicted by the Buddha himself, who stopped on the hill some 2,500 years ago. Mingun and its unfinished pagoda is next, followed by Ava and Sagaing, where there are still 600 pagodas and monasteries, home to some 3,000 monks. Amarapura comes last, where you watch processions of monks crossing the iconic U Bein Bridge during a cruise on the Irrawaddy. On the way to Bagan, you stop in the villages scattered among cotton fields and rice paddies to visit farmers’ markets or cheroot factories. Bagan, less crowded than Angkor yet just as magnificent, displays its glorious monuments across a vast plain covering 80 km² (31 square miles). The rural, unspoiled landscape is dotted with temples and stupas. From Ananda to Thabyinnyu and Gawdawpalin, you spend one day visiting the most famous temples. Another is spent exploring the dirt paths of the vast plain by scooter. Then it's a flight to Inle Lake, where you spend three days exploring its pagodas and monasteries, floating gardens, and sunken stupas. From there you fly to Yangon, where you discover its rich history and vibrant new energy, meditating in pagodas and visiting art galleries. When night falls, explore clubs and rooftop bars, with an expat, who takes you to their favourite local spots. Next, you head to the Andaman Sea and an island that feels like paradise in the Mergui Archipelago. The string of islands dropped in the deep blue water is a constellation of brown rocks crowned with tall trees and fringed with dazzling beaches. On these white sandy beaches you can enjoy doing nothing right by the sea. You can chill out on the sandy beach. You can swim in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. You can explore the reefs and the mangroves. Or you can choose to turn inland, to immerse yourself in the intense green of the forest. The island is three hours from the Burmese coast, and you reach it by private speedboat, for the exclusive experience of connecting with nature. It’s a secret paradise.

YOUR JOURNEY

Everywhere, we have selected the finest accommodation, chosen for its charm and exceptional location. In Mandalay, at the foot of the Royal Fort, you stay in a marble and teak hotel, nestled in a lush garden. In Bagan, you have a beautiful hotel in the heart of a vast park, looking out over the thousands of temples. There are two ancient pagodas within the park itself. At Inle Lake, it’s a hotel inspired by the Shan and Intha cultures, at the foot of the blue mountains, bordered by rice paddies. In Yangon, your hotel is the former residence of the governor of the southern states of Myanmar, which has lost none of its 1920s splendour, with its teak wood and rich silks. And on the untouched island of Lampi, in the Mergui Archipelago, you stay in an eco-lodge (the only one permitted on the island). There are 14 bungalows hidden between the sea and the mangroves. Yours is a treetop villa.
For all your private tours, throughout your journey, you will have a guide. And you have the contact details of our on site Concierge, available at any time. It’s their job to deal with the unexpected.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Night on board, arrival the next day.

Transfer and check in for three nights near the royal fort, in a hotel built in line with traditional prestige architecture - a privilege for guests, with its marble and teak interiors, lush garden, spa, swimming pool and restaurant.
Mandalay is home to some of the country’s most renowned monasteries, and has a particularly large monastic community - 40,000 monks for a population of 500,000. Here, ancient culture is passed down in the shade of the pagodas.
Included - a private tour of Amarapura with its Mahagandayon Monastery - a centre for monastic and religious study - and the legendary U Bein Bridge, built in 1782. Spanning 1,200 metres (nearly 4,000 feet), it is the longest teakwood bridge in the world, where you can watch the beautiful procession of monks crossing over Taungthaman Lake. A private cruise on the Irrawaddy River at sunset brings your day to a close.

Included: a tour of Mandalay, taking in the Mahamuni Buddha Temple - nearly seven tonnes of gilded bronze, four metres (13 feet) high, and said to come from the ancient kingdom of Arakan; Kuthodaw Pagoda, with its collection of 729 marble slabs inscribed with the teachings of Buddha; and Shwenandaw Pagoda, one of the most precious gems of Burmese wood art and the last remaining vestige of the 11th-century royal palace.

Included - full-day private tour of the former capitals. Arrive in Mingun after a peaceful cruise along the Irrawaddy River. The city is home to an unfinished pagoda that reveals a superb panorama of the surrounding countryside from the top. Sagaing is the spiritual centre of the country. With nearly 600 Buddhist pagodas and monasteries, it is home to 3,000 monks. Golden rooftops rise above the trees all around. On the other side of the river, crossed here by a famous bridge, lies Ava. Highlights include the palace watchtower and the Bagaya Monastery, built entirely of teak.
Optional - a walk through Mandalay for photo enthusiasts, finding the best vantage points to capture your surroundings and scenes of daily life.

On your itinerary - drive to Pagan. Follow the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, past villages, sesame and cotton fields, and rice paddies. Cross the bridge to Pakokku, a large town that you’ll explore by tuk-tuk, visiting its thanaka market in an old monastery and a cheroot factory - the Burmese cigars for which Pakokku is known. Next, travel down the river by boat, past small fishing villages lining the banks. Arrive in Pagan after two hours of sailing to check into your charming hotel in the heart of a vast park, with beautiful views over Pagan’s thousands of temples and pagodas - two ancient pagodas are also within the park grounds. From the terrace at sunset, the panoramic view over the vast Pagan plain is stunning.

Already included - full day exploring Pagan’s most significant temples and stupas, including a visit to Nyaung Oo Market, Shwezigon Pagoda, the grand Ananda Temple (one of the largest Burmese pilgrimage sites), the mural paintings at Wetkyi-In Gubyaukgyi Temple, and Dhammayangyi. Pagan is also renowned for its lacquer workshops, which you won’t want to miss. The next day, electric bikes are available so you can discover the charms of the city at your own pace.
Optional - meet the director of Pagan’s Department of Archaeology, a unique opportunity to learn more about Pagan’s history through the objects preserved in the archaeological museum.

Private transfer to the airport, then flight to Heho. Another private transfer to Inle Lake, then take a pirogue across the water to your hotel on the lakeshore to stay for four nights. The wooden architecture of the chalets is inspired by Shan culture. Spa treatments draw on the wellness traditions of the mountain peoples and are offered in delightful surroundings. The restaurant reflects the intersection of cultures in these regions, serving Burmese, Shan, Chinese and European cuisines. It all sets the perfect tone to help you acclimatise to the pace of lake life.
Included - board a traditional pirogue to discover the floating gardens of Inle Lake and meet its market gardeners and fishermen as you glide over the water. Arrive on the eastern shore of the lake and set off on foot through villages to discover the Intha’s traditional gardening techniques.

Inle Lake is a world apart. What makes it unique are its Intha villages on stilts, surrounded by floating gardens. Only the gentle sounds of fishermen’s boats disturb the quiet of the place.
Included - spend a day exploring the lake by traditional pirogue, discovering houses on stilts, floating gardens, markets and pagodas. Nga Hpe Chaung Monastery offers a chance to stretch your legs and admire its collection of ancient Shan Buddha images. Your guide will facilitate varied and enriching encounters with local people.

Included - travel to the Sagar region by pirogue. Off the beaten track, at the far south of Inle Lake, this is one of the most beautiful places in Shan State, with mountains, small villages and rice paddies. As you explore, discover the 108 hollow stupas built in the 16th and 17th centuries. Lunch in the home of an Intha family.

Private transfer to Heho airport and flight to Yangon. Another private transfer and stay one night in a teak colonial mansion. Once the governor’s residence for the southern states of Burma, its has retained all its splendour and 1920s atmosphere. The spacious rooms are furnished with wood and silk; the lush garden is dotted with ponds filled with blooming lotus. Welcome to the most beautiful hotel in the city. There are two sides to the former Burmese capital. The first exhibits the faded charm of various periods in its history: golden pagodas and giant Buddhas, parasols and longyis, colonial facades overgrown with vegetation. Beneath the banyan trees, a British atmosphere still lingers. The second side is a creative, dynamic vibe that is reinvigorating Yangon. A rapidly developing urban landscape brings delightful surprises in many areas, from contemporary art to the food scene.
Included - private tour of Yangon’s pagodas, taking in Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda and its famous, 70-metre (230 feet) long reclining Buddha, and Shwedagon Pagoda, believed to house 8 strands of Buddha’s hair beneath 40 tonnes of gold leaf. This is the centre of Burmese devotion, where you can wander quietly, listening to the monks’ mantras. After dinner, join your guide for an evening stroll to discover the vibrant energy of Yangon by night, taking in hidden neighbourhoods, markets, street food stalls and trendy bars.

Private transfer to the airport and flight to Kawthaung, then private transfer to the jetty to take a private speed boat (3 hours) to Lampi Island, in the heart of the Mergui Archipelago in the Andaman Sea. Its eco-lodge, which opened in March 2018, is the only authorised one on the island. It comprises 14 villas located on the sand or in the trees between the mangroves and the beach. Amid the pristine biodiversity, there is a unique sense of isolation. Enjoy three days relaxing on the beach, swimming in the Indian Ocean, walking along forest trails, kayaking through mangroves, or snorkelling. With just a simple mask and snorkel, you’ll be able to marvel at schools of fish in every colour - the sea is so clear, you can see up to 40 metres (131 feet)! Here and there, in these idyllic waters, you may spot a large dugong or the graceful dance of a turtle.

Take a private speedboat crossing to Kawthaung, then a private transfer, and flight to Yangon. Stay one night in your hotel, where Victorian grandeur and colonial decadence are on proud display. We love the refined atmosphere, the great attention to the decor, and the ideal location facing the river.

Included - half-day private tour of Yangon. The visit begins at Le Planteur, a beautiful colonial residence nestled in a tropical garden, which has preserved a refined culinary expertise from the time of British colonisation, and transports guests to Kipling’s Burma with afternoon tea in true English tradition. Then board the circular train that connects Yangon to its outskirts - on board, schoolchildren jostle with street vendors and workers heading home for the day. And stroll between old colonial districts and the art galleries that bear witness to the city’s revival. Private transfer to the airport and international flight in the early evening. Arrival the next morning.

In Mandalay, the vibrant street stalls and artisan workshops provide wonderful backdrops to capture scenes of daily life. You also venture into the surrounding villages to photograph freshly dyed textiles drying in the sun at the weavers’ workshops and pagodas at sunset.

RICE BARGE LUNCH - INLE LAKE

A boat ride on the lake, on board one of the sturdy boats that transport rice, to soak up the unique atmosphere of Inle Lake, which was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2015. Observe the daily life of the people who live on the lake's shore, watch them fishing and see birds such as the Tibetan gull or the black-winged stilt. And the lake’s food has its own distinctive flavours that are especially delicious when you taste them floating on the water.
