The word “paradise” may be overused - don’t we all have our own idea of what paradise looks like? - but it has to be said: Antigua comes remarkably close to the island ideal. Larger than its sister island Barbuda, it features hundreds of beaches and coves, each more beautiful than the last. The sea shifts from pale aquamarine to vivid turquoise; the sand runs through a subtle spectrum from white to soft gold. Alongside small towns and fishing villages with brightly painted wooden houses, palm trees form a gentle transition between the coast and the island’s interior. Life here moves at an easy pace, with subtle reminders of the colonial past. Beneath the coconut palms, polo and cricket matches play out, and the timeless ritual of afternoon tea endures. Driving is on the left here, too. Beneath the same coconut trees, the rhythms of steel bands mingle with the music of a major summer carnival, a vibrant celebration of Creole culture. The old stones of St John’s, English Harbour and former plantations tell compelling stories to anyone willing to listen. For this richly layered holiday, you stay on Antigua’s west coast, sheltered within a shimmering bay and enjoying direct access to the Caribbean Sea - ideal for encounters with stingrays and the countless flashes of colour that animate the underwater world. From here, exploring the rest of the island is easy, with each day’s itinerary improvised as you go. The only activities set into your agenda are a private, guided tour around the island and a meaningful encounter with the local Nyabinghi (Rasta) community, whose inspiring way of life keeps certain African traditions alive. The rest of the time is yours: diving, reading, paddling, enjoying a massage, walking through the forest, tasting fungee (a cornmeal dish similar to polenta) and salt fish, feasting on lobster and seafood, napping, or sipping a cocktail as the sun sets.

Your hotel

Your very own Creole cottage. The hotel consists of around twenty brightly painted wooden houses, linked by charming palm-lined paths. These intimate retreats offer rustic charm - dark wooden floors, exposed beams, canopy beds and shaded terraces - along with all modern comforts, including air conditioning and an outdoor shower. This pared-back style suits island life perfectly and highlights the property’s true luxury: its natural setting. Before you stretches a truly sublime panorama - palm trees swaying in the breeze, the electric turquoise of the Caribbean Sea, and the lush contours of the island beyond. On site, you will also find a spa and a swimming pool. Swimming, yoga, snorkelling, paddleboarding and pure relaxation on the beach are all just a few steps away.

Your trip

This is a journey as smooth as Antigua’s sand. Conveniently-timed flights, a carefully chosen and perfectly located hotel, private transfers to and from the airport, and a rental car for two days to explore the island or sample one of the excellent restaurants we have recommended - everything falls naturally into place. Add to this the invaluable support of an on-site concierge, who lives locally and is perfectly placed to fine-tune your itinerary if needed - whether booking a massage, extending your car rental, arranging a polo lesson, boat outing or hike at short notice. They can even push back your return date, should the mood strike…

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Climbing Mount Obama

Mount Obama, also known as Boggy Peak, is Antigua’s highest point, rising just over 400 metres (1,300 feet) above sea level. Setting out from a farming village, you begin the ascent accompanied by a guide. The trails vary in terrain and difficulty and are lined with coconut palms, mango trees, bamboo and other local plants, all explained along the way. From the summit - reached in around three hours - the views across the island’s west and north coasts are superb. A well-earned reward.

Snorkelling with turtles

This half-day outing begins with a pleasant walk through the tropical forest, a black pineapple plantation and a fishing village. You then reach a beautiful beach where you gear up to set off in search of the green turtles that inhabit the surrounding waters. During the snorkelling session, you may also spot shipwrecks, tropical fish, stingrays and squid. The day ends with a short hike to a natural seawater pool surrounded by vegetation, like a scene straight out of a storybook.
