Bolivia is a country of many altitudes. Each level has its own landscapes and atmospheres. The butterflies of the Santa Cruz region don’t live in the same environment as the flamingos of the salt lagoons in the south-west. Just as the urban youth in La Paz have a different lifestyle from the indigenous people of Lake Titicaca. Paradoxically, it is the contrasts that form the unity of the country. Bolivians see themselves as a diverse and varied nation. Arrive in Santa Cruz then climb to Sucre, universally renowned for its quality of life and blended artistic heritage. Then, in Potosi, you are at the world’s richest source of silver, that once flowed into Renaissance Europe, bequeathing colonial ambiguities and contemporary industrial challenges on the region. In many ways, the vast natural landscapes of the southwest, from the Siloli Desert to the Salar de Uyuni, may seem far removed from our modern world, but with its geological wonders, the region is entering the 21st century at its own pace. As you will see in Lake Titicaca, where you will spend two nights - one in Copacabana and the other on the Isla del Sol. Here you will find Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria and Inca ruins. Finally, La Paz offers the picturesque charm of a friendly, spontaneous, messy, colourful city that defies any attempt to fit it into a mould. By this point, the contrasts mentioned above will have manifested themselves in shape, colour, and flavour, and Bolivia will be firmly imprinted in your memory.

Your Trip

The country’s demanding geography requires carefully-planned logistics. That’s exactly what we have put in place, so your trip offers the best guarantees of comfort. Please note that specific conditions apply to San Pedro de Quemes and the Isla del Sol. Nevertheless, you will have the essentials at every stage: the chance to recover from a busy day's sightseeing and an ambiance in harmony with your surroundings. The major transfers - Santa Cruz to Sucre and Uyuni to La Paz - will be by aeroplane. Other transfers will be in an air-conditioned car with driver. These methods of transport have been selected to facilitate ease of travel as much as possible. And the scenery keeps travellers from growing weary. To make sure you get a feel for each place on your itinerary, visits are organised throughout. They are conducted with private guides (except in Uyuni and South Lipez, unless you specifically request a guide here). The country’s natural and cultural wealth certainly make it worth while. And if you have any concerns or last-minute requests, you’ll have the contact details of our on-site Concierge service to assist you.

That’s the spirit!

On this trip, you will discover the deep-rooted culture and spiritual traditions of the Bolivian people. So, keep your spirits up! But at a leisurely pace. Your itinerary has been designed to allow for a gradual adjustment. At every stage, take the time to catch your breath, don’t push yourself too hard, and make sure to hydrate regularly.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Night on board, arrival the next day.

Transfer to the centre, Equipetrol neighbourhood. With its raw concrete, brick and glass, the hotel makes no secret of its contemporary style. It embraces it. Inside, leather seats complement the materials. The décor is themed, with a focus on photography: music, cinema, motor racing, football, etc. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The dining area has a pizzeria, a wine cellar and a coffee shop. To recover from the flight, there is a beautiful swimming pool and a gym. Your suite is available upon arrival.
Already on your itinerary - Butterflies and orchids. Accompanied by a private guide, visit the Güembé Bio-Centre, which is half an hour from Santa Cruz. This tropical nature park features a vast insectarium dedicated to butterflies, where they go through the different stages of their life cycle. While the last stage is the most dazzling, the previous stages are also a source of wonder. Then, take a stroll through the orchid garden, which rivals the butterflies in terms of diversity and splendour. From the footbridges, you can spot toucans and blue macaws, among other birds.

Transfer to the airport and flight to Sucre. Transfer. Stay for two nights in the historic centre. The hotel is a miniature colonial pueblo with a shaded square, rooms, restaurant, chapel and traditional tavern serving chicha, which is a fermented drink made from corn and fruit. The décor is not revolutionary but does subtly break with convention, but while they live in the present, they avoid making a clean break with the past. Moreover, the old Ciudad de la Plata de la Nueva Toledo surrounding the hotel offers splendid examples of architectural and cultural fusion everywhere you look. Strolling around here is a joy.
Optional - Sucre with a private guide.

Bolivia's constitutional capital has preserved a beautiful collection of 18th and 19th century monuments. Its cultural, aesthetic and political history is reflected in its white buildings. Sucre's university tradition dates back to the early 17th century (Universidad Mayor Real y Pontificia San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca - 1624) and continues today, giving the city a youthful energy.
Already on your itinerary - Potolo, a community in the Andes. You board a private vehicle with a guide and head for Chataquila, north-west of Sucre. There, you take an ancient Inca trail and, after a two-and-a-half-hour walk through the majestic Andes, you reach a Jalq'a village: Potolo. The Indians practise traditional agriculture (visit to a farm) and weave aguayos (squares of fabric) with intricate animal patterns on small looms. Between tourism and bean fields, local life is adjusting to the 21st century.

Transfer to Potosí. The city is built on Cerro Rico, the mountain safe filled with silver, which was exploited to help transform Renaissance Europe. Tin and zinc are now extracted from the mine and it can be visited, unless you are claustrophobic or asthmatic. In that case, you can opt for the museum of monastic life, which is housed in the buildings of a Carmelite convent founded at the end of the 17th century (a notable collection of religious art). Overnight stay in the city centre. At first glance, the hotel's architecture is rather strange, but the interior decoration nicely embodies the somewhat formal idea of chic accepted in Latin America. The services are provided with precision and the sauna, indoor swimming pool and gym are standard. The restaurant makes commendable efforts to rise above the ordinary.
Already on your itinerary - Potosí mining is not dead, and you will discover one of its aspects with a private guide: ore processing. Helmets and protective clothing are provided on site, along with all the necessary technical explanations.
Optional - Potosí, baroque and colonial.

Transfer to Uyuni, which is notable for its impressive locomotive graveyard. Overnight stay in a hotel in the centre. Classic façade. Inside too, at the back. The colours are bright: yellow, orange, turquoise, pink. The rooms are simple and well maintained. Relax in the indoor swimming pool or sauna. There is a bar and snack bar on site, and the neighbouring restaurant serves as the hotel's dining room. International cuisine, Bolivian style.

Already planned - Meet the driver, then head to Sud Lípez and the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve, arriving early at the Sol de Manana geothermal site. There are a hundred mud lakes that hiss and smoke in the icy air. The day moves from one exceptional natural site to another: the Dali Desert, which shares an atmosphere with some of the landscapes painted by the eponymous artist; Laguna Verde and the Licancabur volcano (5916 m) reflected in it; and Laguna Colorada and its flocks of flamingos. Then, you head for the Siloli Desert, which is part of the Atacama. Night in the desert. The cottages of the hotel hamlet huddle together to withstand the winds. Their stone walls blend modestly into the general minerality, over which the Jarava ichu grass grows like a beard. To the south-east rises the 6,020 m Uturuncu volcano.

Already planned - Drive to San Pedro de Quemes. Continue your tour of the natural wonders of the south-west with a series of lakes located between 4,000 and 4,200 metres along the border with Chile (Route de las Joyas), whose chemical composition and light create stunning colours. Overnight stay in a volcanic stone refuge hotel, whose simplicity blends in well with its surroundings. Here, you feel close to nature in all its harshness but still enjoy good service.

Already planned - The Salar de Uyuni. The largest salt desert in the world: 10,582 km² (4,087 square miles), 64 billion tonnes of salt, and significant lithium reserves. It’s a landscape with one dimension, and a colour that’s not really a colour - an immense sheet of intense white beneath a vast blue sky. The walk is dizzying horizontally. You will be reassured to find Incahuasi Hill, home of the Inca, and its giant candelabra cacti, which break up the abstract effect of the salt flats.
You will return to your hotel in Uyuni for the night.

Transfer to the airport and flight to Cochabamba, then flight to La Paz. Transfer to Copacabana, on the shores of Lake Titicaca.
Already planned - The small town is renowned for its 17th-century Church of Our Lady, which is a beautiful immaculate building that houses the Virgen de la Candelaria, patron saint of Bolivia (a statue carved from agave wood by the sculptor Francisco Tito Yupanqui, 1550-1616, who is a descendant of the Inca Huayna Capac). A major witness to the Christianisation of the Andes. Overnight stay in the southern part of the village. The exterior of the hotel features stylised colonial architecture. The interior décor evokes the Indian Titicaca region with its bright colours, fabrics and various objects. The facilities are well designed and comfortable in every respect. The restaurant menu features fresh fish from the lake. Whether in the rooms or the garden, which slopes gently down to the lake, the atmosphere owes much of its charm to the sun and water.

Already planned - Boat to Isla del Sol. Overnight stay in a small eco-friendly estate. The cottages themselves are made of stone, adobe bricks, wood and thatch, and the interior design features local crafts (furniture and textiles). The conditions for guests are simple and excellent. The charming welcome and the sunset over the lake, which can be seen from the garden, add to the pleasure of authenticity.
The Isla is sacred because it is where Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, children of the Sun Inti who were born from the foam, are said to have left from to found Cuzco. A private guide will take you around the major archaeological remains, including the sacred rock of the Incas, Titikala (above which is a sanctuary of the Tiahuanaco culture: Chucaripupata); the palace of Pilkokaina; the labyrinth of Chinkana, and more.

Crossing to Copacabana. Transfer to La Paz. Two-night stay in a hotel in the city centre. The decorators may have been inspired by Great Britain as there is panelling, polished wood, and shades of aniseed, grey and cerulean blue. The style remains classic and understated. Cosy comfort in the rooms. The main dining room serves international cuisine. The coffee shop prides itself on being Bolivia's first coffee producer, roaster and café. A gym is available for guests.

Already on your itinerary - La Paz like a local.. Your guide for the day is not a guide in the usual sense of the word. He has been living in Bolivia for about fifteen years. In other words, he knows the country and its capital like the back of his hand. The idea for the day is to match your desires, your curiosity and your enthusiasm with La Paz and its way of life. There is no preconceived formula for doing this. Instead, you will meet up to chat about your expectations and preferences and he will bring his in-depth knowledge of the people and places. A plan of action is quickly drawn up. And off you go on a stroll, during which La Paz will answer your questions in its own unique way!
Also planned - Dinner at Gustu restaurant. This is one of the restaurants where Andean cuisine is modernised in the most subtle and convincing way. Another high-end experience.

Transfer to the airport and flight home. Night on board, arrival the next day.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Sucre, the good life

As any Bolivian will tell you, it’s good to live in Sucre! At an average altitude, with beautiful historical heritage and a relaxed, welcoming feel, Sucre is UNESCO-listed. Here, the blend between indigenous heritage and European influence seems to have been achieved more successfully than elsewhere. In any case, accompanied by your private guide, you will be able to truly appreciate the cheerful atmosphere in depth. We begin at the Casa de la Libertad (House of Freedom), where Simon Bolivar founded the Republic, and continue on to the Museum of Indigenous Art (textiles), the Franciscan Convent of La Recoleta, Saint Philip Neri Church, etc.
Optional - Half-day activity

Potosi: baroque and colonial

Before making Spain rich, the silver of Potosi made Potosi itself wealthy. This can still be seen today in the historical centre, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The colonial architecture here has a particular opulence, while the splendour of the churches was undoubtedly matched by the harshness of the mining conditions. With a private guide, visit the Casa de la Moneda (the Potosi Mint), opened in 1572; the spectacular San Lorenzo de Carangas Church, an 18th-century masterpiece of Andean Baroque; the beautiful historical districts and the former working-class neighbourhoods.
Optional - Half-day activity

Add a few extra days…

Explore the Amazon and Madidi National Park - Madidi National Park in Bolivia is the best preserved treasure of the Bolivian Amazon. Located northeast of La Paz, its exceptional biodiversity sets Madidi apart. The journey begins in Rurrenabaque, at an altitude of 274 metres (900 feet), on the banks of the Beni River. Choose to explore this part of the Amazon on foot or by canoe, marvel at its landscapes - including Bala Canyon and Lake Chalalán - and observe the wildlife and flora of this unique ecosystem.

Discover Amboró National Park - Amboró National Park is one of the most beautiful protected areas in Bolivia. Its southeastern part is a Yunga, a transitional zone between the Andean highlands, the plains and the Amazon rainforest - at the confluence, therefore, of three ecosystems - resulting in rich biodiversity and an impressive variety of landscapes, such as the giant fern forest shrouded in thick mist or the majestic waterfalls of the Jardin de las Delicias, which can be reached by hiking through the tropical jungle.

Trek across the peaks of the Cordillera Real - Trekking in the Condoriri massif will take you to some of the most majestic summits of the Cordillera Real. Adventure with a capital A, that is not seriously challenging, where each stop is an opportunity to marvel at breathtaking panoramas, spectacular mountain views and high-altitude lagoons.
