To stay in Anguilla is to drift into a dream. Previously, the Arawaks called it Malliouhana, “arrowhead”, for its elongated shape, a spur of land pointing into the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus arrived and, true to form, did not try very hard to understand what he had found. He renamed it Anguilla, for its long, slender shape. Perhaps, too, because it seemed to elude him: so much gentleness, beauty and ease, asking nothing in return but a little light and sound, traded for trinkets and bells. The Arawaks were wiped out, but the archipelago remains generous; a journey to Anguilla is about learning to listen to silence and suspended time.
