Travelling in Chile feels a little like changing planets. You find yourself amid the surreal landscapes of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest in the world, yet capable of miraculous blooms during El Niño. Its rugged, lunar terrain seems untouched by humanity, and yet our footsteps are real on this ochre land of craters. Despite gravity, you feel close to the stars and at night it almost seems possible to reach out and touch them. Chile can tell an endless number of legends. Seafaring strongholds like Valparaíso and Chiloé evoke beauty guarded by waves and isolation overcome through conviviality. But it is in the far northern territories that Chilean grandeur truly comes into its own. Patagonia, the ends of the ends, wild and untamed, spreads out at your feet with its cracking glaciers and blue iceberg lakes. Truly another planet.

Travel to Chile by region

Atacama Desert & the North

Journey through Northern Chile. The vast salt flats of the Atacama are among the most spectacular in the Americas. A world of silence, they stretch out in the heart of the Andes mountain range at altitudes of over 4,500 metres (14,763 feet). Magical vistas of high-altitude lagoons, fumaroles from the El Tatio Geysers, churches built from cactus wood and llama leather. La Serena is worthy of stay over a few days. From Aguirre to Hemingway, it is laden with stories of conquests, big-game fishing and lively, well-watered parties. It is also the departure point for astronomical observatories, including the renowned VLT. Further north, Chungará Lake, overlooked by the Parinacota volcano, forms the border with Bolivia.

Chilean Patagonia

From Araucania to the Lake District, a journey through Chilean Patagonia is a celebration of majestic lakes and snow-capped volcanoes. In contrast, Chiloé Island, homeland of Coloane, under constant rain, tells legendary tales of whalers. Further along, the Carretera Austral with its furious Ríos draws in rafting enthusiasts and keen anglers, and already the Province of Magallanes, which, deep within its fjords, offers the unforgettable spectacle of giant glaciers and lost lagoons. The long southern road that leads from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales runs along the Strait of Magellan, through a desolate, windswept steppe landscape. Here at last is Torres del Paine National Park, an extraordinary place with its 242,000 hectares of lakes and glaciers.

Easter Island

A small volcanic speck lost in the vast emptiness of the South Pacific, Easter Island is a piece of Chilean land with a remarkable history. A trip to Easter Island will immerse you in fascinating landscapes of black rock cliffs battered by waves and grassy moorlands where the famous megalithic statues of the moai stand out. These statues have immortalised for eternity stone warriors or gods, all of whom turn their backs to the ocean, except those at Ahu Akivi – and serve as a reminder of the Polynesian origins of the island’s inhabitants. A stay on Easter Island is a fascinating experience, combining isolation, the harshness of the elements, human warmth and unspoiled nature. Discover all of our travel inspiration for Rapa Nui.
