A journey to Peru: you have had a taste of the humid Amazon rainforest, dreamed before the giant Nazca lines – creations of brilliant astronomers, mad artists or perhaps extraterrestrials – followed the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, met the Uros of Lake Titicaca on their floating reed islands. And now, above your head, the great condor of the Andes soars. You took the bus this morning to see it at dawn. Like any great lord, it kept you waiting. And now it is there, flesh and bone, unsettling and protective, too vast to be just a bird.

Travel to Peru by region

Northern Peru

Your journey through northern Peru will take you to some of the country’s most beautiful archaeological sites, off the beaten path, as this region was home to the oldest civilisations in Peru. Here, the wealth recognised by UNESCO is not only cultural; national parks and lagoons are also among its highlights: Huascarán, Llanganuco, Huayhuash – places where trekkers are left breathless… The road from Lima to Huaraz runs alongside breathtaking gorges that form a natural fortress. The pre-Inca site of Chavín reveals enigmatic monoliths and labyrinths. Departing from Trujillo, the site of Chan Chan. Taking the Pan-American Highway, you head to the Sipán site or to Túcume, which has no fewer than 26 pyramids.

Peruvian Amazon

Preparing for a trip to the Amazon always means asking yourself if you are really being sensible, given how persistent the myth of Fitzcarraldo and the reputation of the Jivaroan peoples are. There are two entry points to the Peruvian Amazon. Departure from Lima, Iquitos, which is connected to the rest of the world only by the river. You can explore Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve on a land expedition or by river aboard a cruise boat. Departure from Cusco, Puerto Maldonado, on the Rio Madre de Dios. A vast ecosystem composed of freshwater and vegetation, the Amazon is the planet’s great ecological reserve. Accommodation in tents or lodges, boat trips on the rios, and hikes through primal forest to observe extraordinary flora and fauna.

The Andes

The Altiplano rises to over 4,000 metres (13,123 feet), and during your journey through the Peruvian Andes, you will stay at an average altitude above 2,500 metres (8,200 feet). Breathe! Your base camp is Cuzco, an open-air museum, a blend of architectural styles: Baroque art grafted onto indigenous land. Cuzco pulses with a vibrant energy and features boutique hotels and “fusion” restaurants. Departure point for exploring the Sacred Valley, with Chinchero, Pisac, Maras and all the way to Machu Picchu. Further on, Lake Titicaca. On foot, by train, by local bus. Everywhere, Andean communities still speak Quechua or Aymara, and the traditional dress is still worn by elders. The adobe hamlets cling to the still-cultivated Inca terraces, linking everyday life to the past.
