Itinerary highlights

  • Connecting three of the most beautiful Swiss agencies by train - medieval old towns, lakeside strolls, contemporary art…
  • A Swiss guide so you can experience each place as a local, and your tickets to the Beyeler Foundation: it’s all arranged!
  • Perhaps opt for a cruise on Lake Geneva, tickets for the Paul Klee Centre, or the Tinguely Museum?
  • Carbon absorption, central hotels, Concierge service, mobile app, our recommendations: travel the Voyageurs way.
Switzerland shares this undeniable advantage with other small countries around the world: nothing is inaccessible there. However, that is where the comparison ends. For Switzerland is Switzerland. But Lausanne is neither Bern nor Bâle. And vice versa. So instead of choosing, you’ll see all three, all in one trip but at a gentle pace. Spending two days in each city allows you to take the time to admire, understand and savour. You can leave a little mystery too, or ask questions. Our local contact, a Swiss woman passionate about her country, is there to answer your questions and to reveal, three of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities at their very best. The first, Lausanne, flourishes in the gentle way of life characteristic of lakeside cities. With vineyards to boot. Medieval heritage and a Gothic cathedral (the most important in the country), vibrant student life and the Olympic Committee - the city defies categorisation and has something to charm everyone. In the capital, Bern, people do not give in to the pressure of seriousness - the River Aare and the bears in the Bärenpark certainly have something to do with it. Strolling becomes a leitmotif in the narrow streets of the old town, whose value has long been recognised by UNESCO. This Swiss triptych concludes in Basel, which inevitably sparks enthusiasm among art and architecture enthusiasts. Between two crossings of the Rhine aboard ferries in operation since the 19th century, you’ll reach the local creativity hotspots: the Beyeler Foundation with its contemporary art collection, the Tinguely Museum dedicated to the renowned Swiss artist, or the Vitra Design Campus, with buildings by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Tadao Ando. In the surrounding area, the vineyards are reminiscent of those in Lausanne - have we come full circle? - and of the inseparable bond that Swiss culture maintains with its terroir, a connection we will have enjoyed throughout the journey.

Your journey

From one adventure to the next, from train to train, from station to station, we assure you: rail is the best way to discover Switzerland. So forget about energy-consuming journeys - in every sense of the word - no driving licence required. Especially as Lausanne, Bern, and Basel are close enough that transport does not encroach on either your enjoyment or your schedule. The trip has been marked by relaxed strolls - one in each city - in the company of a local who is passionate about history and watchmaking, always attentive to new trends and full of quirky anecdotes about her homeland. In short, the best companion for exploring historic districts, walking along the shores of lakes and rivers, or sitting in a café and discussing daily life in the cantons. In Basel, we have also arranged tickets for the Beyeler Foundation. You have the rest of the time to design your own itinerary and digressions. You are helped in this by the central location of your accommodation, which we have also chosen for its comfort - international standards, excellent breakfasts, gyms and attentive staff. As for any little surprises or sudden, irresistible whims, they are managed in real time by our on-site Concierge. In coordination with your travel specialists, the concierge can indeed help to adapt your journey even while it’s underway.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Train journey and a two-night stay in a peaceful neighbourhood in the centre of Lausanne, at a recently renovated hotel. This large, internationally styled property has lovely, comfortable rooms, perfectly equipped. Breakfast is served in a fully glazed room with lovely views over the city, Lake Geneva and the mountains in the distance. On site, a sauna and gym help to keep you in shape.

Lausanne, capital of the Canton of Vaud, is surrounded by vineyard-clad hills and borders Lake Geneva along its northern shore. This superb natural setting lends the city a tangible sense of calm and well-being.
In your itinerary - Guided tour of Lausanne in the footsteps of a local. Spend a few hours exploring the city in the company of a local Swiss guide. Not only is she a historian who is passionate about her country, she is also a keen horology enthusiast - having previously been the curator of Le Locle’s watchmaking museum. She'll gladly share her hidden favourites and insider advice, focusing on your interests and whatever you're in the mood for. Along the way, you’ll see the country's foremost Gothic cathedral, watching over the old town and its cobbled streets since the 13th century; then the Olympic capital; the shores of Lake Geneva, and more. A relaxing stroll where nothing is set in stone.
Not to be missed - Plateforme 10, the city’s new arts district. Located on a vast esplanade in the heart of Lausanne, it brings together three outstanding museums: the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts, the Cantonal Museum of Design and Contemporary Applied Arts and the Cantonal Museum of Photography. Visitors drift from one to the next, enjoying the joint cultural programme that showcases different disciplines along the way. An enlightening glimpse of Switzerland’s cultural dynamism.
Optional - Cruise on Lake Geneva.

A short train journey to Bern. Stay for two nights in a central hotel with a decidedly British feel. With tartan prints and matching décor, everything has been tastefully designed to fit with the theme. Staff are attentive, breakfast is generous and the bar is great.

Despite its status as federal capital, Bern has retained an intimate feel, revealing itself on pleasant walks along the banks of the River Aare or by climbing up to the Rosengarten (rose garden) by the BärenPark - dazzling views guaranteed. The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is like an open-air museum: four miles (six km) of arcaded walkways and narrow lanes lined with traditional façades, fountains and medieval towers. Bern's allure is undeniable. To help you get to grips with it all, your Swiss guide takes you on a stroll in the footsteps of Albert Einstein, up to the top of the cathedral tower, along the River Aare, through the streets of the old town or from shop to shop, depending on your wishes.
Not to be missed - The bears at BärenPark. Symbol of Bern, the bear shows off in this riverside park, on the site of the former 19th-century bear pit. In addition to spotting these beautiful specimens here (except in winter, when they hibernate) and learning about their way of life, you can also visit the small museum nearby, dedicated to 100% Swiss brands and products.
Optional - tickets for the Paul Klee Centre.

Train journey to Basel and a two-night stay at a hotel made up of two historic 18th-century buildings. Playing on its twin nature, the property is divided into two concepts: one is a classic hotel with an elegant, understated contemporary look; the other is an art gallery hotel with a quirky, colourful style and eclectic furnishings. In both wings, rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed. The restaurant is Michelin-starred, showcasing top-quality produce handled with exceptional skill. A cafe-bar, a theatre and a wine bar complete this extraordinary venue.

In your itinerary - In your itinerary - A private stroll through Basel with a local Swiss guide. By now you know what to expect in terms of form - an easy urban stroll with no constraints or fixed itinerary - but not in terms of content. Basel is a city apart, where street art and fashion thrive alongside religious architecture and the contemporary art of Jean Tinguely. As you roam, don’t miss (like many Baslers) crossing the Rhine on one of the city’s ferries - Wilde Maa, Leu, Vogel Gryff and Ueli - which run between the five bridges. Engine-free, they rely solely on the force of the current to carry passengers across. You can also embark on the lock cruise, which connects Basel to Rheinfelden, travelling up the river.
Also included - Tickets to the Fondation Beyeler which, in a building designed by Renzo Piano, presents the outstanding collection of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler and regularly hosts major exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Architecture enthusiasts can also visit the Vitra Design Campus to admire buildings designed by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Tadao Ando. Located in Weil am Rhein, the site can be reached via a pleasant walk or bike ride through the vineyards.
Optional - Tickets to the Tinguely Museum.

Return journey by train.

The panorama is breathtaking, and the experience is a must.
