Itinerary highlights

  • From the paradisical south to the volcanic north, a balanced journey that combines relaxing on the beach with hiking and culture
  • Staying in guesthouses full of Creole charm, run by Martinicans with a passion for their island
  • The guided walk in historic An Mao park, a day at sea and seine fishing off the coast of Le François: it’s all on your itinerary
  • Direct flights, a car to explore the island, on site Concierge service, our personalised recommendations: travel the Voyageurs way
To the south lie the crystal-clear waters of the Baignoire de Josephine and the centuries-old plantations of Trois-Ilets. To the north, it's lush tropical forest and the iconic Mount Pelée, known locally as the Bald Mountain. And all around, the endless beaches, the perfect embodiment of island paradise as we imagine it: Petit Macabou, Tartane, Baie Coco, Anse Madame, Le Diamant and Carbet. There's a vast range of landscapes to suit everyone. Hikers of all levels will love it just as much as those who prefer to simply relax on the warm sand. Martinique is an archetypal Caribbean island, but there’s much more to it than its picture postcard image. The history of the sugar cane planters and stories of pirates are recounted at the Jouan mill, the Bonneville Garden, the Savane des Esclaves, Fort Saint-Louis and Saint-Jacques Church The island has its own history and culture too. Rum, a genuine source of local pride, is another illustration of the island's history. It was first created here by the Dominican missionary Jean-Baptiste Labat (1663-1738). Distilleries, some of which still operate using old steam engines, are scattered across the island like historical gems. The ancient heritage is still very much alive. And what can we say about the food, so rich in colour and flavour? Martinican cuisine offers a wonderful array of Creole delights such as accras, chiquetaille de morue, smoked chicken, chayote gratin and colombo. With its translucent waters sheltering vibrant ecosystems, forest trails, banana plantations, gardens, and squares adorned with historic pavilions and markets radiating a contagious zest for life Martinique is rightly proudly of its beautiful charms. And while resisting these charms is a challenge, the hardest part is finding the strength to leave.

Your journey

The three stages of the journey are marked by three stop-offs in small charming lodges. For the first few days, you stay in Sainte-Anne, in the south of the island, in the hills of Cap Chevalier. Here it’s all scenic views, warm welcomes, friendly smiles and insider advice. Then you head north to Fonds-Saint-Denis, where you delve into a lush tropical jungle. Here you have a spacious room and everything you need for absolute comfort. The journey ends on a beautiful note in Le François, where your Creole-inspired room is nestled in a lush garden filled with tropical plants that looks out over a peaceful bay. Of course, there’s a swimming pool everywhere you stay, to keep you cool and relaxed. To make sure you've got something to do, tickets await you for the An Mao Heritage Memorial, near Sainte-Anne, where you can also go on a guided walk. And since the Caribbean Sea naturally makes you want to go island-hopping, we have also planned a day at sea? with a skipper. It's the perfect opportunity for you to try out the ancient technique of seine fishing. The rest of the time, enjoy the freedom of your rental car to explore the island at your own pace. In the event of any surprises or last-minute requests, you have the contact details of our on site Concierge, who is always ready to respond to your needs throughout your journey. Along with your travel specialist, they can also change your journey as it unfolds.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Upon arrival, collect your rental car and drive to Sainte-Anne. Three-night stay in a typically Creole guest-house. The pool area offers a breathtaking view of the nearby vegetation and the Caribbean Sea further in the distance. People gather there for a drink after a day at the beach or sightseeing, or simply to enjoy the morning sun. Outside, a bar and grill area is available so you can easily enjoy the catch of the day after returning from the market.

Already planned - Your entry tickets to the An Mao Heritagesite. A project initiated by Pierre-Yves Panor, poet, novelist and passionate protector of Martinique’s heritage, this memorial stands in a lush one-hectare park that was once home to former slaves. It offers a guided tour that reveals the fascinating history of these men and women, explores the legacy of marronage, and shows how these people forged their own paths after abolition.

Things to see and do - Lay your towel on the volcanic sand of Anse Noire, slip into the water and, with a bit of luck, swim with sea turtles; cruise along the bay of Le Marin; pick up some fruit and accras at the Diamant market; make out the distant outline of the Sleeping Woman; doze in the shade of a coconut tree on Salines beach.

Drive north on the island, heading specifically to Fonds-Saint-Denis. Three-night stay in a guest room in a charming colonial house dating from 1770. Amid a lush decor, between the Carbet River and the tropical forest, calm envelops the place in absolute silence, broken only by the sounds of surrounding nature. The swimming pool, with its sweeping view over the river below, invites you to unwind before sitting down to a dinner of home-made Creole fare. All that remains is to sink into the cosy comfort of your room, ready to start all over again the next day.

Perched at 400 metres above sea level, Fonds-Saint-Denis is a charming little village spanning the steep slopes of the Pitons du Carbet. Thirty minutes from the coast, the beaches give way to the pleasures of walking. The village is the departure point for picturesque trails that weave through the forest. The village itself, though modest, is home to a few points of interest: a 19th-century church and the Morne des Cadets Observatory, which keeps watch over Mount Pelée using one of the largest seismographs in the world.
Optional- Private hike in the north of the island.

Things to see and do - Test your balance as you walk along the Beauregard Canal, also known as the Slave Canal, and perhaps have an unexpected encounter with a matoutou falaise (tarantula); take a trip to the volcanological and seismological observatory; venture into the jungle to the Saut du Gendarme waterfall, enjoy a picnic there and take a swim — in whatever order you like; visit an agricultural rum distillery and, why not, treat yourself to a tasting.

Drive to Le François. Stay for three nights on the heights above the town. Equidistant from the southern beaches and northern forests, nestled among banana trees and flamboyant trees, your guest-house sits in the heart of a tropical garden. Here, a few Creole-style rooms stand alongside a swimming pool lined with sun loungers and  shaded carbets. The restaurant serves creative, fresh and local cuisine, all savoured against the stunning backdrop of Thalémont Point and the islets of Le François.

Scheduled -  A day at sea and purse seine fishing. This ancient technique involves catching fish at the surface by surrounding them with a large net called a “senne”. Set off with a local fisherman from Grand and Petit Macabou. Aboard his boat, he enthusiastically shares his advice and secrets of the trade. After hauling in the morning’s catch, enjoy a delicious grilled fish for lunch on site. Between fishing sessions, take refreshing dips near the fonds blancs - sandy stretches that emerge from the sea, sometimes several hundred metres (yards) from the shore.

Things to see and do - Venture onto the Caravelle Peninsula in search of deserted beaches; sail among the islets of Le Robert; try water sports in the bay; visit Habitation Clément, one of the most beautiful sugar estates in the Caribbean.

Drive to Fort-de-France, return the rental car, and take your direct flight back. Night on board, arrival the next day.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Hiking in the north of the island

Lace up your hiking boots for a five-hour adventure between Le Prêcheur and Grand-Rivière, where nature unfolds in all its splendour. With a private guide, discover the lush northern Caribbean coast on this moderately challenging walk. It’s a veritable riot of exotic vegetation, wildlife and breathtaking scenery. In Grand-Rivière, you have a well-deserved lunch at a local restaurant of our choice. For the return journey, forget about walking. You head back by sea on board a traditional yole, enjoying new views of the coastline along the way.
