In the tale Le tatouage de Mataora (Mataora's Tattoo) by Céline and Sébastien Ripoll, a young Maori chief obsessed with battle meets Niwareka, one of the spirit women of the underworld. Out of love for her, he undergoes various trials and, upon returning to the village, is able to pass on to his people the Taniko, the art of weaving, and the Ta Moko, the art of tattooing. This ancestral culture and its rites are inextricably linked to the land of the kiwi, and your tribe is quickly introduced to it. But don't forget to enjoy the landscapes that serve as its backdrop: towering mountains, purring geysers and ancient forests. The adventure begins in Auckland. New Zealand's largest city offers a wonderful introduction to the country - and a great urban break before heading off to explore the countryside. Located on the Coromandel Peninsula, Whitianga is synonymous with first excursions into the great outdoors. Here, everything invites you to get active and explore in a relaxed, hospitable and playful atmosphere that commands respect. The intensity of the journey steps up a notch in Rotorua, which is renowned for its high geothermal activity. Geysers, fumarole fields and bubbling pools fascinate all ages. So do the forests that dot the landscape. With giant trees obliging, the whole tribe climbs high to flirt with the canopy. And because you can't leave the country without visiting the South Island, Queenstown brings the journey to a close. On the shores of Lake Wakatipu, under the watchful eye of the mountains, thrill-seekers have a field day in what many consider to be New Zealand's outdoor activity capital. Now that you're warmed up, you can join in the fun. Between nature, culture and first-time experiences, the memories of this great Kiwi adventure will remain in your family's memory for a long time to come.

Your trip

A journey to the other side of the world cannot be improvised, especially with children. So that you can devote yourself entirely to your holiday, we take care of everything in advance. The international flight is booked, with priority passage through police and customs formalities to minimise stress at the airport. Domestic flights are also arranged, as are your rental vehicles and private transfers. What's more, once you're there, there's no need to spend the day in the car rushing from one activity to another. The itinerary has been optimised: just four stops, each no more than 3-3.5 hours apart. Your accommodation? Each has been carefully selected for its child-friendly atmosphere and location: a contemporary retreat near the heart of Auckland; a property just steps from the beach in Whitianga; a modern hotel with a swimming pool in the heart of Rotorua; a family apartment on the shores of the lake in Queenstown. During the day, you are free to explore at your leisure, with the help of a rental car and GPS app. However, to make sure you don't miss anything essential, we have already added a few activities to your itinerary that are designed to keep the younger members of the team (who can't sit still) happy: climb to the top of the Sky Tower in Auckland, go kayaking at Cathedral Cove, spend the night in the Redwoods forest and the day on adventure trails, slalom between the geothermal pools in Rotorua, race down the summer toboggan run in Queenstown, and more. And if you'd like to add whale watching, a jet boat ride or horse riding to the itinerary, just let us know. If you encounter any (minor) setbacks or have a sudden urge to do something else while you're there, you'll have the contact details of our concierge at your destination. The unexpected is their raison d'être, including when it comes to extending a stop or adding a stage in real time - a concept we have dubbed ‘unstructured journey’.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Night on board. Arrival two days later.

Upon arrival, private transfer and stay for two nights in the heart of Auckland, near the business district. Built in 1912, the hotel has retained the character and charm of its past enhanced with a modern decor. The rooms are as simple as can be, yet generously sized and furnished in a contemporary style that suits them well. A generous breakfast is served in the morning, perfect for fuelling up before setting out to explore the various nearby attractions. Queen Street shopping district is a five minute walk away, and Victoria Park Market and Viaduct Harbour are ten minutes away.

Not to be missed - Auckland War Memorial Museum, a perfect introduction to the country. The museum is home to the largest permanent exhibition showcasing Pacific cultures. Its collections feature Maori culture, geology, wildlife, and the country's flora. The War Memorial galleries on the top floor of the building explain the role of the New Zealand army in world conflicts.
Already booked - Your tickets for the Sky Tower. An iconic symbol of Auckland, this slender structure can be seen far beyond the city limits. Standing 328 metres (1,076 feet) tall, it is the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere. From the summit, the 360 degree view stretches as far as 80 kilometres (50 miles). The whole scene becomes even more mesmerising at night. Children and parents alike will be left speechless.
Optional extra - Whale and dolphin safari.

Pick up your rental car and drive to Whitianga, on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula. Stay for three nights in pretty cottages surrounded by a subtropical garden. Inside, the high ceilings and wooden features, from the polished ceiling to the exposed arches, create a particularly pleasant atmosphere. Soft light floods the rooms. After an impromptu barbecue, why not head to the beach, just a few steps away.

In your itinerary - Kayaking in Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve. This marine reserve is hard to beat when it comes to kayaking. Te Whanganui-A-Hei (as it is known in Maori) is a little paradise of beaches, small islands and rocks. Settle into your kayak and glide into caves, watch the local wildlife, look for the stone arch that gave the reserve its name and, of course, get splashed. All this under the watchful, friendly eye of the guide.

Whitianga is close to the Coromandel National Park, making it an ideal base for enjoying one of the many activities on offer there. Inland you can try trekking, canyoning and rafting. Out at sea there's diving, fishing and boat cruises (the town is on Mercury Bay). There’s something here for everyone.
Things to see and do - Leave the coast behind and head into the forest via Route 309; hike to New Chums Beach; take in some culture at the Mercury Bay Museum; and, shovel in hand, dig your own hole on Hot Water Beach to reach the underground hot springs.

Drive to Rotorua, skirting the Coromandel Forest Park. It’s up to the driver to decide whether or not to take the longer route along the coast. The region you're heading for is famous for its lakes. Stay for three nights in a small, modern hotel in the heart of Rotorua. The classic style continues from the lobby to the rooms. Children will be delighted to see not one but two swimming pools (one indoor and one outdoor).
In your itinerary for the evening - Redwood Forest sky walk. The designer lanterns and multicoloured lights create a captivating atmosphere as you move along the walkway that spans 20 or so suspension bridges and platforms. It’s the perfect opportunity to see the giant redwood trees and the famous New Zealand silver ferns from above.

The city of Rotorua is known for its geothermal activity and its lake, not to mention the very strong smell of sulphur. The geothermal activity of this volcanic plateau is some of the most active in the world. Rotorua is also a place of great significance for Maori culture.
Already booked - Tickets for a self-guided tour of Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, famous for its striking colours and diverse landscapes. The lakes, caverns, bubbling mud, geysers, steaming fumaroles and rainbow-hued silica terraces are like a sound and light show in broad daylight. It’s a tour that won’t fail to arouse all your senses.

Also booked - Family zip line and aerial adventure. Head off together to the heart of the indigenous forest. A clever and fun network of walking trails, tree platforms, zip lines and suspension bridges takes you up to the treetops. It’s a great way to soak up the local surroundings with lots of thrills. And it's something that the whole family will enjoy.

Drive to Auckland. When you see the Mumbai Hills, you’re almost there. Return the rental car and flight to Queenstown. Upon arrival on the South Island, pick up your new rental car and stay for three nights on the lakefront. The apartment embraces simplicity with its spacious, well-appointed rooms and understated decor. The undeniable highlight is the view. Shimmering waters reflect the sun’s rays, with sculpted mountains in the background where clouds sometimes settle. Parents can make good use of the fully equipped kitchen, while children enjoy their surroundings.

Set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and framed by mountains, Queenstown is New Zealand’s adventure capital. All year round, people come here for skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, rafting, hiking or fly fishing. For adrenaline junkies there’s paragliding, skydiving and bungee jumping too. And all this in a breathtaking setting.
In your itinerary - Summer tobogganing for the whole family.
Built overlooking Queenstown, the luge has five downhill runs spread over two tracks. Your round-trip cable car tickets are included, along with several fast downhill runs. In the heat of the moment, you quickly spot the daredevils and the level-headed members of the family. The most skilful will overtake you at the very last minute on a bend. And, of course, you can capture it all with plenty of photos and videos.
Optional extra -Dart River jet boat experience.

Also booked - Scenic drive and deer farm. Deer Park Heights offers a wonderful mix of experiences and is a great family-friendly option. Perched 550 metres (1,804 feet) above the city, the scenic road winds through enchanting landscapes, some of which featured in the Lord of the Rings films. It’s perfect for hiking and encountering herds of friendly deer. There is something for everyone to enjoy.
Optional extra - Rees Valley on horseback.

Return the rental car and international flight home. Night on board, arrival the next day.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Encounter whales and dolphins

About thirty minutes from Auckland by high-speed catamaran (thrilling!), the Hauraki archipelago unfurls a string of paradise islands with small white sandy coves and lush vegetation. Offshore, whales and dolphins come to frolic in the nature reserve. We approach respectfully, waiting patiently for the animals to decide to make an appearance on the surface - with varying degrees of theatricality depending on their mood.

Jetboating on the Dart River

A jetboat is a boat powered by a jet engine. So get ready for a thrilling ride with 360° turns. Today's playground is none other than a wild river at the confluence of Lake Wakatipu. To top it all off, the outing includes a walking section to bring your adrenaline levels back down and allow you to better appreciate the stunning scenery of the famous Mount Aspiring National Park.

The Rees Valley on horseback

Experienced riders and novices alike are invited to ride alongside a guide on this outing through extraordinary terrain. The horses trot along the heights of the lake, cross glacier-fed rivers and offer unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks. And if you feel like you're patrolling the sets of The Lord of the Rings, it's because several scenes from the saga were filmed here!
