Before the age of air travel, reaching Tahiti meant a month at sea – and the islands announced themselves first by their scent. Two days before reaching land, long before anything was visible, the fragrance of *tiaré* already hung in the air. Here there are islands upon islands, the one that promises ever more, an intoxicating set of nesting dolls. And then there is the music of the names: Bora Bora, Raiatea, Tupai Atoll, Tahiti and its Gauguin-coloured light. There are the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands, a place where there is no room for complaint.

Travel to French Polynesia by region

Austral Islands

About 600 km (373 miles) south of Tahiti, the volcanic islands of the Austral archipelago enjoy a temperate climate. Still rarely visited by tourists, the Australes are not a destination for staying in large luxury hotels, as there simply aren’t any. During your stay in the Austral Islands, you are welcomed into local homes with genuine simplicity, giving you the privilege of experiencing Polynesia as a Polynesian. Travellers come to Rurutu especially to observe humpback whales during the southern-hemisphere winter, from July to October. The most visited island is: Rurutu.

Marquesas Islands

A journey to the Marquesas... The name is enchanting. With unique archaeological sites, extraordinary landscapes and diverse crafts, this archipelago, just a four-hour flight from Tahiti, stands apart from the other Polynesian archipelagos. Without lagoons, the Marquesan landscapes are made up of rugged coastlines revealing bays, capes, rocky points and cliffs… It is a truly unique and magical destination with a rich cultural heritage, everyone returns from there amazed. This archipelago’s islands are: Nuku Hiva | Hiva Oa | Ua Pou | Ua Huka | Tahuata | Fatu Hiva.

Society Islands

A journey through the Society Islands archipelago, made up of high islands (except Tetiaroa) encircled by lagoons, allows you to easily combine cultural visits, hikes in the mountains and valleys, without missing out on the pleasures of swimming in turquoise waters. Travellers often begin their journey with a few of the Society Islands, as they are diverse with a wide array of activities. This archipelago’s islands are: Tahiti | Mo’orea | Huahine | Raiatea | Taha’a | Maupiti | Bora Bora | Tetiaroa.

Tuamotu Archipelago

Composed entirely of atolls, the beauty of this archipelago makes it a must-visit destination. A stay in the Tuamotu archipelago delights travellers with its beaches, dive sites and pearl farms. You are here in a “picture postcard” setting. The easiest islands to reach in this archipelago are: Rangiroa | Tikehau | Manihi | Fakarava.
