Gujarat travel

Gujarat is not Rajasthan, nor is it the India of the Ganges valley, nor that of the Himalayas, and not yet that of the south, either. Because of its geographical location, this is the India of fulfilment and encounters. Following the river, the Indus Civilisation found a maritime outlet there. Hinduism became established there early on, alongside its critics: Jainism and Buddhism. Muslim horsemen and sailors reached the area and built minarets; Portuguese merchants and captains arrived in turn, Jesuits built churches, then, under the British Raj, Anglican pastors. The future Mahatma Gandhi grew up there, so in a way, contemporary India emerged from this place. The Gujarati synthesis is rich and powerful, and sometimes it erupts. Read more
