Beyond the Arctic Circle, the county of Finnmark marks the end of Europe and the beginning of an almost unreal world, far removed from everything we know. A world where, in winter, a velvety light touches everything with infinite gentleness: the plains, forests, hills and glaciers. In the polar night, green veils undulate in the sky above the fjords. Northern lights. A paranormal setting. A sublime extraterrestrial manifestation that owes its beauty to its fleeting and elusive nature. On the desert plateaus, the Sami people, with their ancestral culture, are at one with the harsh elements and the raw, unspoilt landscapes that are covered in snow for several months of the year. Everything crunches, cracks and rustles poetically. Time seems to slow down with the snowflakes. Yet there is nothing hostile about Finnmark - except for the winter cold, which can be easily overcome by wrapping up warm. This trip offers the chance to experience it for a few days. Karasjok is the administrative capital of the Sami people and gives us access to the quintessence of life in the Far North. It is a ‘town’ that blends into its surroundings, a winding river, reindeer farms, hills planted with trees dressed in white. This is where the Sami Parliament is located and the starting point for many Nordic adventures on snowshoes, snowmobiles, skis, sleds, etc. Alta, the gateway and capital of Finnmark, is also very close to the wilderness of these isolated lands. Here, you live in direct contact with the forest and enjoy the pleasures of extreme climates: a moment suspended in the delicious warmth and woody scent of a sauna; a meal with Nordic flavours in the cosy setting of a wooden chalet, sheltered from the elements; a dreamy moment in front of the fireplace, gazing into the flames of a crackling fire. We also make a detour to Kautokeino, in the interior of the region, where the Sami traditions of yesterday and today are cultivated in the hollows of the meandering Altaelva river. The soundtrack is a deep silence, broken only by the occasional muffled sound of snow falling from a branch and the joyful barking of a husky puppy with bright eyes.

Your trip

The perfect companion for exploring Norwegian Lapland at leisure in the middle of winter, your 4x4 rental car seems capable of taking you to the ends of the earth - and isn't that, in a way, exactly what it does? Or how else to satisfy the irrepressible desire for freedom inspired by these wild landscapes? Other journeys are made by plane... and on skates. Your itinerary includes delightful walks and encounters: a special moment and lunch with a Sami reindeer herder in Karasjok; a dog sled ride and a snowmobile safari in the Alta area. Not to mention the meditative experience of the sauna, a Nordic remedy for all ailments after a day in the great outdoors. Your accommodation has been selected for its cosy feel, its proximity to nature and its warm atmosphere - and, of course, its saunas. On arrival, you will spend a comfortable night in a contemporary hotel in Alta city centre. In Karasjok, you will have exclusive use of a charming log cabin with rustic interiors that cultivate a charming ‘trapper's cabin’ spirit. Finally, during your second visit to the Alta area, you will stay in an intimate establishment with large windows opening onto the outside and, sometimes, onto the Northern Lights. The extremely refined cuisine serves wild fish, crab, grouse and hare accompanied by berries and birch sap, among other things. The hotel also breeds huskies. The real Lapland life. And if you feel like adding another walk, a dinner or a few days in the Lyngen Alps to this wonderful itinerary, our on-site Concierge is at your disposal throughout your trip.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Upon arrival, pick up your rental car and stay for one night in the heart of the city. The comfortable rooms have a warm, contemporary design. The hotel has a restaurant, a bar and the inevitable sauna. Welcome to Norway.

Optional extra - Fjord cruise and whale watching (November to January).
Drive to Karasjok and get your first glimpse of the wonderfully rugged landscapes of Norway’s far north. On the way, take a detour through the town of Kautokeino, the capital of Sami culture, both past and present, and a historic location for the native people. The Kautokeino uprising took place on 8 November 1952. The reindeer herders rebelled against the Norwegian merchants who had grown wealthy at the expense of Sami families. Visit the extraordinary hybrid building with its innovative architecture, that is home to the Sami National Theatre, the Sami High School and the Reindeer Herding School. Have your breakfast locally, alongside the students.
In Karasjok stay in for two nights in a small log cabin, made by the owner. The rustic decor pays tribute to the region’s traditional way of life, with lots of wood, animal hides and reindeer antlers. All around you is the forest, and close by, the gentle murmur of a river. The first thing to do is head to the sauna, heated by a wood fire and lit by the flickering glow of candles.

Straddling the winding Karasjohka River, Karasjok is the administrative capital of the Sami people and home to their parliament.
In your itinerary - Sami reindeer experience and lunch. Sami culture is not folklore but the reality of everyday life. Spend a few hours with a Sami herder and their reindeer herd and experience their life for yourself. With the herder and their family, get to know the reindeer who are so closely entwined with the ancient way of life of the Sami people. Then gather together around a campfire in the big outdoors to chat some more while enjoying a hot drink and a local lunch.

Drive back to the north. You will be staying for three nights about 10 kilometres (6 miles) from Alta, in the heart of a pine forest. The property is a hotel and a husky farm, and has only a handful of rooms spread across three small houses that look like modern chalets. Inside, the focus is on warm wood, with large windows to keep you connected to the outdoors (and, potentially, the Northern Lights). The food is distinctly local. The chef sources fish caught in nearby ice holes and herbs picked from the farm’s own garden. Other treats such as pastries with juniper berries and birch sap are also on the menu. This incredibly sophisticated cuisine is seasonal and directly inspired by the wild nature of Finnmark. Hiking trails pass right in front of the hotel, so you can set off strapped into your skis or snowshoes! Nearby, there is also a kennel with around sixty huskies. It’s a white dream come true.

In your itinerary - Dog sledding tour. Meet the musher who, after teaching you how to drive the sled, will ask you to help assemble the dog team. Once the sled is ready, the dogs jump and bark joyfully, their excitement growing to fever pitch. It feels like you are experiencing the very essence of life in the Far North. Then you're off! The harnesses tighten, the team pulls the sled, and the lead dog's commands guide you on your way. The hubbub dies down quickly and speed takes over. You glide over the snow of the vast Finnmarksvidda plateau in majestic silence. And at the end of the day, it's time to embrace another Nordic tradition. The sauna is reserved just for you.
Optional extra - Cookery class with a chef.

Already booked - Snowmobile safari in the mountain plateau. In winter, snowmobiles are part of everyday life in Lapland. They're a comfortable, fast and versatile way of getting around, which makes them perfect for gliding through the snowy landscapes of Finnmark. Wrap up warm and watch the hills, plains and forests whizz by. It’s an exhilarating experience full of thrills.

Drive to the airport, return the rental car and international flight home.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Fjord cruising and whale watching

Every year between November and January, whales come to take refuge in the fjords of northern Norway. From Alta, aboard a boat, properly equipped with insulated suits and accompanied by a guide, you will encounter these fascinating humpback whales and orcas, which are some of the largest mammals in the world. A memorable experience, made even more beautiful in the winter light.

Cooking classes with a chef

To begin with, you will learn about the different products that each season brings, Arctic plants and preservation methods - salting, fermentation and drying. Then it's time to get stuck in, preparing a vegetarian, fish, seafood or meat dish of your choice. Tasting and sharing are of course part of the itinerary.
