Children may not know it yet, but Denmark is an eminently romantic country, a land of legend and adventure. Before setting off, you might read them a few tales by Hans Christian Andersen - The Little Mermaid (a national emblem), The Steadfast Tin Soldier, or even the true Snow Queen… It’s one way to prepare them for a journey into a fairy-tale land and for other stories, true ones this time, that have shaped the course of history with a capital “H”. Like that of the Vikings, who were not as rough as people think, and who seeded the coastline with small fishing ports, some of which have grown large. Or tales of fishermen, of course, and herring galore; the Cold War era and its indestructible bunkers… They will be fascinated by all of this, and by Denmark’s welcoming and generous landscapes, where the borders between islands and mainland are almost invisible. Everything begins in Billund,in a Danish province unlike any other, one which we call Legoland®! A land of colourful bricks entirely dedicated to adventure, where impromptu water battles with pirates, roller coaster descents, and submarine dives await… A unique place where children marvel and parents rediscover their childlike spirit. Then, because we are sad to leave this wonderful world, we sign up for another fun visit, this time to the Lego® House. You stay not far from all this, in the peaceful town of Horsens, from where it is easy to explore Jutland. By bike, you'll visit Aarhus in particular, a charming city with a Viking past that has embraced the Scandinavian design and vibe. Whether by car or on foot, Ribe, Esbjerg, or the islands - it’s up to you. Next, head towards Svendborg and the island ofFunen, on the other side of the Little Belt bridge. The human-scale island is easy to discover during day trips: Odense, one of the country’s oldest agencies and the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, where you take a journey back in time. There are also castles, windmills, labyrinths, funeral longships, and mysterious bunkers. Go back to the future in Copenhagen, a city spanning two islands. It is a surprisingly welcoming and easy-going capital, even for children; a city that breathes thanks to its proximity to the sea, urban parks, and miles upon miles of cycle paths. There are also friendly neighbourhoods, such as Nørrebro, an astonishing place filled with playgrounds and leisure areas, art, and street furniture from around 60 countries - a reflection of the cultural diversity of the people who live in the city. A few kilometres away, hear the call of nature and the deer of the Jægersborg Dyrehave - a magnificent forest park home to many animals. An opportunity to create more memories together, and to write more stories.

Your journey

In no time at all (just a very short direct flight), you find yourself in the heart of Denmark. Once there, a rental vehicle allows you to travel from one stop to another and, most importantly, to set the pace and direction of your days as you wish, supported by a mobile app and GPS. Those with more time can also start the journey from home, travelling with their own vehicle and stopping in Hamburg, Lübeck or Amsterdam. Because finding comfortable family accommodation can sometimes be a challenge, we have selected three perfectly located and family-friendly accommodation options for you: in Horsens, a palace with 18th-century walls overlooking a pedestrian street; in Svendborg, a bright waterfront hotel where every room is extended by a terrace; and in Copenhagen, a fully equipped independent apartment right in the city centre. You spend several nights in each location, having all the time you need to digress at your leisure. That doesn't mean there aren’t a few highlights planned here and there: Legoland® Park and the Lego® House, for which you already have tickets, a bike tour of Aarhus, a boat at your disposal in Odense, or even a private exploration of the capital accompanied by a local. And for anything we can't plan ahead - minor adjustments or sudden wishes - our on-site Concierge can be contacted at any time during your trip.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

After a direct flight to Billund, collect your hire vehicle and drive to Horsens (50 minutes), where you will stay for four nights. Your hotel is a 18th-century palace, built by a wealthy city merchant. From this noble past, the property has retained its high ceilings, silky fabrics and attentive service. Children will feel like kings and queens here. To top it all off, the quality of the restaurant makes you look forward to dinner time, and the hotel’s highly sought-after location - a pedestrian street in the city centre, right in the heart of Jutland - is ideal for exploring.

In the 1930s, Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter from Billund, created the first Lego® - a contraction of the Danish leg godt (play well). Twenty years later, he designed the first plastic bricks. And the rest is history - a true Danish success story.
Already included: your skip-the-line tickets for LEGOLAND®. Ole Kirk Christiansen’s son built the site in 1968 to show investors the creative potential of the bricks. Lego® bricks then did what they do best: with the imagination of those who use them, they gradually create infinite worlds. So it was mission accomplished for the site, which quickly became an amusement park containing miniature cities, attractions, animals and more - 60 million bricks creating an explosion of shapes, colours and emotions.
Also on the agenda - Lego® House is just five minutes away (and you’ll already have your tickets). Designed to look like a pile of the brand’s signature bricks, the building is instantly recognisable. Inside, there is a museum with unique exhibits (including the famous Tree of Creativity and the first brick moulding machine), a screening room, interactive zones, shop and restaurant where food is ordered and served using LEGO®, of course!

What to See and Do - Across Jutland. Founded by the Vikings at the beginning of the 8th century, the city of Ribe was an important port on the North Sea throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance. So let’s start there. Today, its pretty, peaceful streets present the charming facades of low timber-framed houses with colourful rendering. Children will enjoy the Viking Museum while parents will appreciate the unique architecture of the Wadden Sea Center. In the surrounding area, Esbjerg serves as a departure point for seal-watching excursions and ferries to the island of Fanø.

Included - a day in Aarhus, just a 45-minute drive south of Horsens. The second largest city in the Danish kingdom and capital of Jutland, Aarhus was also founded by the Vikings in the 8th century, and then gradually became a major, prosperous port. It now has a reputation for art and culture, and it's easy to fall under the spell of this university city, brimming with great restaurants, lively cafes, and museums such as the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum (children will love its “Rainbow Panorama” crown).
Already included - Aarhus by bike. Explore the “city of smiles” by bike, accompanied by a guide who knows it like the back of their hand. Discover its Viking past and more modern attractions along the way. You’ll cycle by streets, squares and inner courtyards, the cathedral, national opera, and city hall designed by Arne Jacobsen. All these remarkable places will be brought to life by your guide’s commentary, telling part of Denmark’s history.

Drive to Svendborg (1 hour and 30 minutes) and check in for three nights at an ideally-located hotel just opposite the islands of Tasinge and Thuro. The spacious rooms are beautifully decorated in understated Scandinavian style. They are perfectly equipped and even have a private terrace. The real highlight, however, is the restaurant, bathed in a wonderful light and opening onto the water through large picture windows. Just a stone’s throw away, exploring the small beach at Christiansminde on foot, by bike or on the water offers a lovely break in a day spent out and about in the car.

Forty minutes away is Odense, the capital of the Funen Island and one of the oldest cities in Denmark. It is known as the birthplace of the author Hans Christian Andersen, who created, among other masterpieces, The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling and The Little Match Girl. The city still preserves his childhood home and, in 2021, opened a remarkable museum designed by a renowned architect that invites you to enter the fairy tale. The reconstructed Den Fynske Landsby (The Funen Village) is also well worth a visit. This outdoors museum takes you back in time with around 20 traditional farms from the 18th and 19th centuries, brought here from the surrounding area and rebuilt, along with mills, a forge and more.
Already included - electric boat hire to spend two hours discovering Odense from a different perspective. It’s a fun way to explore this charming city with your little crew!

The second largest island in Denmark, Funen (or Fyn in Danish), is comprised of a patchwork of farmland and woodland, interspersed with the occasional traditional village or splendid Renaissance castle. To the south, various sections of the famous Øhavstien (Archipelago Hiking Trail) wind through the fields and forests. To the west, the Lillebælt (Little Belt Strait) has been designated a marine nature reserve and is home to a large population of porpoises.
Must-See with children - the Viking Museum in Ladby, Denmark’s only Viking ship grave and the final resting place of a 10th-century Viking king; Egeskov Slot, a magnificent castle-museum with gardens that include a maze; the half-timbered thatched cottages of the Hindsholm peninsula; and the Langelandsfort bunkers for a spot of history.

Drive to Copenhagen and return your hire vehicle, then stay three nights in a self-contained apartment in the heart of the city, just a few steps from Rosenborg Castle. Behind the 19th-century façade, you’ll find a modern, elegant look, with understated style that is typical of Danish design. Equipped with a kitchen, you’ll have the freedom to organise your meals (and days) however you wish - a real advantage when travelling as a family. It feels like a Danish home-from-home with the added benefits of a hotel - housekeeping, luggage storage, and staff.

A “big city on a small scale”, the Danish capital is ideal for exploring on foot or by bike - along its canals, past Renaissance hotels and colourful houses. Always looking out to sea, the city has embraced a passion for its design, food scene and cosmopolitan flair, while never forgetting its humble past as a herring fishing port. The former docks have been transformed into residential districts, and a modern opera house welcomes music lovers by the water…
Already included - Copenhagen with a local guide. Set off with a local guide who knows Copenhagen like the back of their hand, to explore the capital on foot, on a personalised tour that takes account of your interests and your guide’s recommendations. This relaxed walk around a flexible route lets you soak up the atmosphere of different neighbourhoods, experience a small part of daily life here, and get answers to the questions that have been on the children’s lips since the start of the trip.

What to see and do - the famous Tivoli Park with its concerts, rides, restaurants and exhibitions; the iconic Little Mermaid statue; a city boat tour along the canals and through the harbour; Amalienborg Square and Palace to watch the changing of the royal guard; Rosenborg Castle for a treasure hunt in the gardens; wander among the sailing ships and terraces of Nyhavn; explore the trendy Nørrebro district; climb to the top of the Round Tower for a 360° view of the old town; and taste the famous smørrebrød - a slice of rye bread topped with just about anything you like: cheese, egg, raw vegetables, meat or, of course, herring!

Direct return flight.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

In the footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen is a name we all know, that of the writer whose fables and characters we have loved, such as The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling. This walk through 19th-century Copenhagen links the places that retrace his life, notably the house where he lived and wrote all his works. A small hands-on workshop allows younger children to have fun cutting out Andersen figurines. Next, head to the changing of the guard at Amalienborg, then take a stroll through the gardens of Rosenborg, Nyhavn and Højbro Plads.

Jægersborg Dyrehave deer park

About 15 km (9 miles) north of Copenhagen, Jægersborg stretches across 100 hectares of forests, meadows and gentle hills where red deer, fallow deer and roe deer roam freely among centuries-old oaks. Once a royal hunting estate, it now welcomes visitors for picnics, walks or bike rides and wildlife watching outings. In the park, the animals have become accustomed to the presence of humans, which allows visitors to observe them from up close. And the experience of the stag bellowing is memorable!

With a few more days… Amsterdam

If you travel by car, it is easy to stop in the Dutch capital, either on your way there or back. With its maze of canals, small wooden boats, the NEMO Science Museum, waffles, numerous parks and gardens, and its cycling culture, it has plenty to charm curious visitors of all ages.
