Itinerary highlights

  • Take the children on a joyful road trip through Denmark’s wild and island-dotted landscapes.
  • At each location, comfort and independence in your private accommodation; everyone has their own room, just like at home!
  • Skagen with a guide, seal watching in Ribe, horse riding on the island of Møn... it’s already planned!
  • Carbon absorption, rental car, Concierge service: easy family travel with Voyageurs du Monde.
When you look at a map, Denmark is just a tiny little piece of northern Europe. Barely 63,000 km² (24,000 square miles), Denmark is often (wrongly) reduced to Copenhagen and its Little Mermaid. That is out of the question here. This three-part journey will be green or not at all. Green and island based. And free, very free, because we believe in the initiatory power of the road trip and the virtues of improvisation. The same approach applies to accommodation: at each stop, you stay in your own house, with independence and warm comfort as the key. The main itinerary is mapped out; you are then free to digress, take side roads, and explore as your wishes and inspiration take you. Freshly arrived in Billund, you head north by road to the far reaches of Jutland: welcome to Skagen,  opposite the Swedish city of Gothenburg, set on the other side of the Kattegat. There is nowhere more Nordic in Denmark. Or more inspiring. At least, that’s the opinion of the “Skagensmalerne”, a colony of artists who, as early as the 19th century, saw in these lands battered by the elements a privileged place for a holiday retreat. The wild surroundings provide a wonderful setting for family adventures: set out to conquer the gigantic Råjberg Mile dune, a mountain of sand that moves several metres each year! It’s a fantastic vantage point to admire the surroundings, with their disconcerting, lunar-like appearance. There is also this quirky church, gradually being buried by sand, of which only the bell tower can now be seen. Next, head to Esbjerg, on the west coast of Jutland. From there, it’s easy to reach Ribe, the oldest town in the country, as well as the island of Rømø, renowned for its wildlife. An opportunity to pay a little visit to the idle and playful seals as they lounge on the sandbanks. Not to mention the island of Fanø, in the Wadden Sea National Park, with its fishing villages of narrow streets and old houses surrounded by fine sandy beaches, dunes, heathland and pine forests. The trip concludes with three days on Lolland Island, the fourth largest island in Denmark, a very convenient springboard for visiting the neighbouring islets of Langeland and Møn. A rare hilly region of the country, whose turquoise waters have earned it the nickname the “cold Caribbean”. Against a backdrop of pebble coves and immaculate cliffs, wild ponies gallop with their manes flowing in the wind.

Your journey

Keeping the children in suspense in the back seat for ten days - now that’s quite a challenge. One that’s easily overcome when every journey is a little trip in itself. And whether you are on the country roads of Jutland or those of the neighbouring islands, there is no boredom in sight - only excitement and, here and there, beautiful moments of contemplation. Especially as the journeys are relatively short and easy, and there are numerous opportunities to stop along the way. In addition to a rental car, enjoy a carefully selected set of our recommendations. The stop-offs have been chosen for their exceptional natural surroundings, allowing for beautiful walks and explorations suitable for all ages, watching wildlife, and numerous outdoor activities. We have also included several highlights in your itinerary, tailored to each place you visit: a walking tour of Skagen with a private guide, a marine “safari” to watch the seals near Ribe, and a horseback ride on the island of Møn. We also take care of reserving your table at some of the region’s finest restaurants. As for anything we cannot anticipate - minor hiccups or last-minute wishes - these will be handled in real time by our on-site Concierge service.

Your private houses

In Skagen,
You are now the happy temporary owners of a delightful black wooden house with white windows, topped with a traditional thatched roof. A true storybook cottage! From its perch - it sits atop a hill - it overlooks a delightful little beach on the North Sea. The interiors have that timeless charm of the Danish seaside style, with paintings and wooden furniture. The large table welcomes delightful moments of togetherness. The deer that occasionally wander into the garden gracefully embody the resilience of nature in these wild lands.

In Esbjerg
On the west coast, your house is almost on the sand. It is located about 40 metres (130 feet) from the beach, and this is reflected in the decor. White, wood, a touch of blue, and plenty of restraint - Scandinavian dictates. With a cosy lounge and sizeable terrace, the spaces have been designed for families and shared moments. And because the villa is part of a hotel, you also benefit from all the establishment’s services, including the two restaurants and the spa. The best of both worlds.

On Lolland Island
Just outside the small town of Søllested, you will stay in an old farmhouse dating from the late 18th century, surrounded by gardens, forests and fields as far as the eye can see. A lush and peaceful setting that perfectly suits this white building with traditional architecture and a thatched roof. Inside, however, everything is highly contemporary. Danish minimalism and aesthetics blend beautifully with the old beams. The spaces are perfectly laid out, making it easy to organise daily life and cook with local products - unless you prefer to take your inspiration from the very good neighbouring restaurants.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Upon arrival, collect your car rental and drive towards Skagen, at the northern tip of Jutland. There, you’ll stay three nights in a house that looks as if it has come straight out of a fairy tale, with its black wooden walls, white windows and thatched roof! Perched on a hill in the heart of the dunes, it overlooks a small beach on the North Sea. Inside, the wooden furniture and paintings evoke the typical charm of Danish seaside homes. At dusk, everyone gathers around the large table to share dinner, then enjoy breathtaking views of the water from the first floor. And when you waken the next morning, it’s not uncommon to spot the majestic deer that wander into the garden from time to time.

Already included: private tour of Skagen. Skagen's geographical location makes it the northernmost town in the country, and therefore the sunniest. Many painters and poets have celebrated the unique light of Skagen. In the 19th century, a community of artists settled here, drawn by the shifting sunlight, the unrivalled beauty of the natural landscapes, and the tenacity of the fishing community who insisted on living on land that was inhospitable, to say the least. Explore the town in the company of a guide - perhaps taking the opportunity to discover the museum that showcases the talent of those “Skagen painters” who fell in love with the place. Among them, Anna and Michael Ancher left behind an exceptionally well-preserved house museum, where exhibitions are regularly held.
Also included - an evening meal reservation in one of Skagen’s top restaurants.

Must-See - Set out to conquer the Rabjerg Mile dune, located about 15 km (9 miles) from Skagen. This is the largest migrating dune in Northern Europe, composed of 4 million cubic metres of sand being blown northwest by the wind, sometimes moving as much as 18 metres per year! From the summit, 40 metres above sea level, you’ll witness an incredible desert-like, almost lunar, panorama - quite unexpected in Scandinavia.
What to see and do nearby - Den Tilsandede Kirke is a church built at the end of the 16th century, gradually buried by the dunes. The locals struggled against the elements for a long time, but eventually gave in at the end of the 18th century. Now, only a pretty white steeple rises above the ground. While the history of the place is unusual, its natural setting - dunes, forests and the sea as a backdrop - is also well worth a visit.

Drive to Esbjerg, on the west coast of Jutland, and stay for three nights in a house that is barely 50 metres (55 yards) from the beach. The charming decor is enhanced with classic seaside touches - white backgrounds, natural wood, a hint of blue - and that appealing Scandinavian simplicity. It’s all wonderfully peaceful with a very well-appointed kitchen, lounge and a large terrace, where you can relax between excursions. And since the house is part of a hotel, you can also make the most of all its services, including two restaurants and a spa, while still maintaining your independence.

Esbjerg is the ideal gateway to embark for Fanø, a small island just 3 km by 20 km (2 x 12 miles) in the heart of Wadden Sea National Park. Take your car on the ferry crossing, so when you arrive, you can head to the fishing village of Sønderho - with its adorable narrow streets and pretty thatched-roof houses - or to Nordby in the north. The rest of the island, with its fine sandy beaches, dunes, heathland and pine forests, is perfect for exploring on foot or by bike.
In the evening, you have a dinner reservation in one of the island’s excellent restaurants that draws inspiration from local produce.

Must-See - Visit Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark with its picturesque centre, town hall and cathedral. Several museums offer valuable insights, including the Viking Museum and Wadden Sea Centre. Follow the coastline south of the town, past some very beautiful beaches, to visit the wonderful bird and marine life that has made its home on the island of Rømø.
Already included - a seal safari from Ribe. The Wadden Sea coastline is a protected habitat, where dense seagrass beds and mudflats provide a wonderful feast for many animal species. Seals, for example, settle comfortably on the sandbanks and bask by the water’s edge.

Drive to Sollested, on the island of Lolland. Just a few minutes from the village, your new home for the next three nights will be a Danish farmhouse dating from 1775. Surrounded by gardens, forests and fields as far as the eye can see, this peaceful setting is part of a 560-hectare (1,380-acre) estate. The building itself has been beautifully restored to welcome visitors, while remaining true to traditional rural architecture with its white façade and gorgeous thatched roof. Take a step forward in time as you cross the threshold to find the decor is resolutely modern. Minimalist and aesthetic, in the Scandinavian style, it combines exposed beams, modern furniture and soft, natural tones. The island’s fertile soils are a constant source of inspiration to talented local chefs - so there is no shortage of excellent restaurants to choose from round about. You can also cook for yourself whenever you like, with a fully equipped kitchen and a basket of local produce waiting for you on arrival.

Lolland is the fourth largest island in Denmark and there are plenty of opportunities for walks in the surrounding area, especially on the neighbouring South Funen Archipelago. Located about 40 minutes from Odense, it includes the island of Tasinge, where Valdemar Castle (17th century) stands. This architectural marvel was a gift from King Christian IV to his son. Very close by lies the rural island of Langeland, dotted with old windmills and small hamlets full of old-world charm. We recommend a stop in Rudkøbing, the largest town on the island. This old village has a lively fishing port and cobbled streets lined with wonderfully preserved merchants’ houses. Head to the island’s southwest coast to find Klise Nor Nature Reserve. The lagoons, coastal meadows and dunes here comprise some of the most beautiful landscapes on Langeland. On the Ristinge side, you may see wild Exmoor ponies galloping against a backdrop of beaches, ochre cliffs and pebble coves.
Also included - your lunch-time reservation in one of Sollested’s excellent restaurants.

Head to the island of Møn, one of the few hilly regions in Denmark, dotted with thatched cottages and flower-filled gardens. This destination seems frozen in time, inviting you to slow down and savour the moment. Take the small roads that wind between poppy-strewn hillsides, stopping now and again, wherever the notion takes you. Pause in Stege, for example, with its pretty half-timbered houses, or Elmelunde or Keldby, both home to fine examples of Nordic Romanesque art. To the east of the island, the bright chalk cliffs of Møns Klint rise to a height of 128 metres (420 feet) and stretch for 7 km (4 miles). If you can, take a photo of the turquoise waters cascading down the cliff - the colour contrast is stunning. These unique landscapes, unexpected at this latitude, have earned the area its nickname “Cold Caribbean”.
Included - horseriding across Møn Island. Set off from a farm on horseback and ride through the island’s bucolic landscapes, all the way to the impressive cliffs.

Drive to Copenhagen, return your hire vehicle, then take your direct flight home.
