Itinerary highlights

  • Four Shades of (Cape) Verde: An active journey to experience the archipelago in its natural state
  • Rocky mountains, green valleys, lava fields, sandy beaches: grandiose landscapes.
  • São Vicente & Santiago in the footsteps of locals, coastal hike in Santo Antão, ascent of Fogo: already planned!
  • Private transfers, concierge service, recommendations, carbon absorption: the extra Voyageurs touch
If you are seeking coconut palms and fancy hotels, this is not the place for you. An arid land sitting in the middle of the ocean, swept by winds and forgotten by maps, Cape Verde does not fit into any category - and that’s just how it should be. Far from the clichéd paradise of a honeymoon cocoon, Cape Verde is nevertheless an intensely romantic place to experience as a couple. From island to island, this trip has been designed to take you off the beaten track to experience the soul of the country, away from the crowds. It all begins in Mindelo, the beating heart of São Vicente. This city is a true reflection of the island itself: cultural and cosmopolitan, musical and festive. There are artists aplenty here, imbuing the island with a particular warmth and atmosphere. Their carnivals are worthy of Brazil, their dresscode European, and their little ones are carried on their backs African-style - a wonderful introduction! Opposite stands the island of Santo Antão: a high, green, wild, rugged contrast. The rocky mountains plunge into a stormy sea, while lush valleys compete with lunar plains, and people gather - with music ever-present - around a glass of grogue. From the mountains, we head to Santiago , a kind of Cape Verde in miniature. Populations intermingle, black sand gives way to golden grains, jagged coastlines to forests, banana plantations to deserts. In Praia, the country’s capital, you can truly appreciate the archipelago’s rich history and gradual opening to the world. And then there is Fogo, the black island - consisting of a single volcano - where nature offers a completely different spectacle. Its caldera contains a fierce volcano, whose influence seeps even into the temperament of the local people, while its peaceful capital is populated with colourful sobrado houses and flower gardens.

During Your Trip

We have designed this comprehensive yet relaxed itinerary for Voyageurs who wish to go off the beaten track without sacrificing comfort - with specially selected rooms and private transfers included. The aim is to be free, with the reassurance of assistance at any time from our on-site concierge; providing opportunities for meaningful adventures while retaining moments of intimacy. At every stage, you'll have memorable encounters, constant music, and the contagious joie de vivre of Cape Verde. To create a truly enchanting experience, we have selected intimate, comfortable accommodation, perfect for cuddling in after beautiful days of discovery, in properties that are also ideally located and well-equipped. Walks with local guides, private tours in English, and hikes along the coast and/or up the slopes of the volcano to get as close to nature as possible, are already included for you. And if you also want to try your hand at kite surfing in Sal, play at being a chic Robinson Crusoe in Boa Vista, dine at a chef’s table, do more walking, or stay in even more unique accommodation, we will be happy to take care of it for you. Any last-minute requests you may have during your trip will be fulfilled by our on-site concierge, whose contact details will be provided from the start.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Upon arrival, you will receive a personalised welcome at the airport by our local representative. After a private transfer, you’ll check in for two nights at a boutique hotel in the historic centre of Mindelo. The premises combine the charm of Portuguese architecture and an interior atmosphere inspired by Berber culture. The result is a very successful boho-chic ensemble, as if it came straight from the pages of a magazine. As a bonus, there are beautiful outdoor areas where you can have breakfast and relax at any time of day. The beach and the lively streets of Mindelo are only a few steps away.

“Those who do not know Mindelo do not know Cape Verde.” We take the musician Manuel d'Novas at his word, especially as this is the hometown of the famous singer Cesaria Evora and the island’s cultural and musical capital. So we set off for a walk with a local - already arranged - to get a feel for the place and discover the city by following in their footsteps. Their favourite neighbourhood, little routines, secret spots… A leisurely stroll with no set itinerary, wandering through alleys and squares, to share a slice of daily life, talk about everyday living in Cape Verde, and gather a wealth of guidance for the rest of your trip.
Optional - a private dinner at the home of Cape Verdean chef Lamine Mindela.

Private transfer to the port of Mindelo and ferry crossing (about 1 hour) to the port city of Porto Novo on the island of Santo Antão, then another transfer to Ponta do Sol. Once you move beyond the first impression of an arid and rather inhospitable land, the island reveals its imposing mountains and lush valleys, cut off from the world. Settle in for two nights at a small family-run accommodation next to the port. Your room is spacious and filled with light. As for the living areas, garden, terraces and balconies, they all invite you to relax.

Santo Antão is one of Cape Verde’s most beautiful gems, with unspoiled landscapes that have largely escaped the wave of modernity sweeping across the country. It is also one of the poorest islands in the archipelago, and agriculture remains its main activity. Its heights block the wind and clouds, creating a more humid and cooler climate that is ideal for farming.
Scheduled - Private hike along the coast. At the departure from Chã de Igreja, the small shepherds’ paths along the cliffs wind through breathtaking landscapes, between mountains and ocean. By late morning, the Val de Corvo is revealed - a secret little canyon where you can enjoy a special break in the heart of nature. Led by a private guide, this day is also an opportunity to meet the residents of the small hamlets you pass through, known for their unparalleled hospitality. One last climb leads to the colourful village of Fontainhas.

Private transfer to the port, then ferry to Mindelo. Then you’ll have a private transfer to the same accommodation as during your first stay on the island, for comfort that already feels familiar.

Private transfer to the airport and a quick flight to Praia (45 minutes), on Santiago island. After another private transfer, you’ll check in for two nights at a simple yet comfortable hotel perched on a cliff facing the ocean. The view from the room is a real highlight, along with the large saltwater pool and the bar-restaurant below - perfect for a drink or dinner to the sound of the waves.
Must-see, must-do - The historic centre of Praia, known as the Plateau, with its colonial buildings; the African market of Sukupira; Rua Banana, the oldest colonial street in the world; and the Church of the Rosary, which welcomed Columbus and Vasco da Gama.

Santiago is the island where the first city, Ribeira Grande - later renamed Cidade Velha - was established, and where the first church and the first fortress were built. The first Portuguese settlers and enslaved people brought from the African continent invented Creole here, along with new musical rhythms.
Scheduled - Praia in the footsteps of one of its locals. You’ll stroll through the city on a relaxed walk, discovering with your companion of the day their favourite neighbourhood, secret spots, and anecdotes along the way. A relaxed gathering where everything can be improvised to suit each person’s tastes and wishes. It’s also a chance to discover the soul of the city and the people who live there.

Private transfer to the airport and flight to Fogo Island, the black pearl of the archipelago. Then you’ll stay overnight in a small guesthouse built from lava stone, set in the heart of the Caldera. It is run by the welcoming and cheerful Maria, a Cape Verdean. Simple yet comfortable, the house stands out for its unique warmth, musical atmosphere and excellent cuisine.
Already planned - hike along the trails of Fogo’s eruptions. Fogo Island owes its name to the peak that towers above it, the majestic Pico do Fogo - the only active volcano in Cape Verde. Climbing Pico Grande, which rises to over 2,800 metres above sea level, requires a good level of physical fitness. The departure is at dawn, climbing in step with the rising sun to the summit before descending the slopes of black volcanic ash - an unforgettable experience that opens up stunning views: savannah and farmland scattered with peaceful hamlets, terraces of coffee and orange trees, lava fields, etc.
Note: For an easier walk, you can choose the smaller Pico, which finishes with a tasting of wines produced in the Caldeira de Fogo.

Private transfer to São Filipe, on the west of the island, and check-in for one night in a superb sobrado in the city centre, which immediately caught our eye for its architecture, warm welcome and suspended pool.
Optional - Visit of São Filipe with a private guide.

Private transfer to the airport, then flight to Praia. At the end of the day, international return flight via Lisbon. Arrive the next day.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Private dinner at a Cape Verdean chef’s home

Native to Mindelo, Lamine Mindela began his catering career in Portugal, then Germany, before returning home to Cape Verde. He particularly excels in fish dishes. Put yourself entirely into his skilled hands for an evening of gourmet delights.

Day trip to Santo Antão

Discover the island of Santo Antão, from the old cobbled streets of Porto Novo to the rocky formations of Ribeira das Patas. You’ll be treated to a surprising succession of landscapes, colours, microclimates, and architectural styles. This 6-hour sightseeing day includes transport in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with a Portuguese-speaking driver and lunch at a local farm.
Optional - With a private guide

Explore São Filipe

The island of Fogo (“fire” in Portuguese) owes its name to its volcano - a natural wonder that draws many visitors. But people also come here to meet its inhabitants, discover its villages and explore its capital, São Filipe. The Old Town and its colonial past contain many historical sights and anecdotes, which can be discovered through its sobrados (townhouses), churches, water supply system(!) and market stalls.
Optional - With a private guide.
