Itinerary highlights

  • The introduction to Cairo: private tours of Giza and the Egyptian Museum, strolling with a local
  • Sailing along the banks of the Nile on board the Steam Ship Sudan, passing ancient sites and seeing Abu Simbel
  • Staying in two legendary hotels at either end of the cruise: the Winter Palace in Luxor and the Old Cataract in Aswan
  • Private transfers, concierge service, Wi-Fi everywhere, private guides on request: the extra Voyageurs touch
Your journey begins in Cairo, over a thousand years old but still as vibrant and captivating as ever. Every era, every dynasty has left its mark here - as can be seen from its minarets, in every style and from every period. No other Islamic capital city can boast this variety. The long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum has recently opened near the famous Giza Pyramids. A colossal complex covering nearly 50 hectares (124 acres), bringing together 3,000 years of history and almost 100,000 artefacts, including the treasures of Tutankhamun. Another noteworthy event to add to your Cairo itinerary: a tour with a local that takes the form of a spontaneous stroll tailored to your interests - wandering among the attractions of Islamic Cairo or exploring the cafes that have made the city famous. Then you move on to the Nile Valley. Two legendary hotels at either end of your cruise: the Winter Palace in Luxor and the Old Cataract in Aswan. Emblematic of the first travellers in Upper Egypt, these buildings are perfectly suited to the atmosphere of the temples. The cruise on board the Steam Ship Sudan is the natural extension of this journey through time.

The Steam Ship Sudan, your Voyageurs Maison on the Nile

Built at the dawn of the 20th century for Thomas Cook and Sons, the Steam Ship Sudan is the last authentic steam ship still cruising on the Nile. It differs from other cruise ships because of its small size and the way it combines the original atmosphere with modern comfort. The two teak decks rise quietly above a hull that, for nearly a century, has been gliding through the waters of the sacred river at the slow pace of its paddle wheels. There are twenty-three cabins (including five suites) on board, each named after a figure connected to the history of the boat or of Egypt: Agatha Christie (who found inspiration for her novel Death on the Nile on this deck), Mariette Pasha, King Farouk, Jean-François Champollion, Herodotus and Oum Kalsoum among others. Voyageurs du Monde oversees the quality of onboard services such as dining (the Sudan is the first ship in the Nile Delta to be supplied with organic fruit, vegetables and eggs) and the recruitment of top-notch guides. If you want, you can have a private guide with you throughout the cruise. While the ship sails, guests can read or relax on the sun loungers on the upper deck, learn something new in a fun hieroglyph or cookery class, spend time playing backgammon in the lounge or chat with the crew members.

Your legendary hotels

Before embarking, you spend a night in Luxor. And your hotel is the perfect introduction to the kind of service you can expect on the Steam Ship Sudan. The opening of the Winter Palace in 1886 marked a milestone in the city’s history. While the walls are over one hundred years old, the interiors have been updated to meet the needs of modern travellers. We recommend walking slowly down the marble staircase and savouring the moment. The staff are attentive to your every need, while remaining unobtrusive. Insider tip: head to the terrace overlooking the magnificent gardens at nightfall to fully appreciate the magic of the place. When you disembark from the boat, you will be in Aswan, and your accommodation is none other than the Old Cataract. This historic building dates from 1899. It has been cleverly restored, changing only the essentials, without altering the soul of the place. The Nile Wing was built later to accommodate Russian and Egyptian engineers during the construction of the Aswan Dam. Inside you will find contemporary elegance and state-of-the-art facilities. On the agenda for your evening: a relaxing spa treatment, a nap by the outdoor pool overlooking the river, and finally, dinner in the majestic dining room of 1902, the hotel's gourmet restaurant housed under a white marble and dark woodwork dome.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Private transfer and settle in for two nights on Gezira Island. The hotel’s tower stands on the banks of the Nile. From the window, you can take in both the river and the city. The decor features oriental motifs, skilfully combined with the clean lines of contemporary design. The facilities and service fully meet modern requirements. Among them are the hammam and spa - a gentle escape - and the swimming pool, accessible all year round. Not far away, stroll through the Zamalek district - a successful blend of Belle Époque atmosphere and the latest expressions of Cairo’s creativity.

In your itinerary: Giza and the Egyptian Museum, with a private guide. Symbols of Pharaonic civilisation, the Pyramids of Giza are the remains of a vast funerary complex built around the middle of the third millennium BCE. They are a testament to the power of the pharaohs during the Old Kingdom. The Great Pyramid of King Khufu is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing, a lasting testament to the splendour of another time. A tour to explore the whole site, beginning at the Sphinx - guardian of the Giza necropolis - then moving on to the megalithic Valley Temple, the Solar Boat Museum, and the three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. You continue your day with a visit to the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, founded in 1857 by the French archaeologist Auguste Mariette. It holds some of the most extraordinary examples of the genius of Pharaonic civilisation and gives us unique insights into the evolution of humanity: 120,000 objects ranging from the prehistoric era to the Greco-Roman period.
Optional extra - Private tour of the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology.

In your itinerary - Cairo with a local. Alongside them, the idea is to experience the city as if you lived there, to grasp its nuances and contrasts, and to discover both its highlights and its lesser-known spots. A kind of “Cairo with subtitles”, and also a chance to pick up plenty of anecdotes and advice. There’s no set itinerary: the outing adapts to each person's wishes. You can choose to see the city from the Nile on a felucca ride, or stroll through the cafes, or ahwa, an institution in the capital and a place for both relaxation and conversation. Others may prefer to visit historic Cairo, home to the world's largest concentration of Islamic monuments, or stroll through the city's most beautiful art galleries.
After lunch, take a private transfer to the airport and fly to Luxor. After another private transfer, you’ll spend a night at the Winter Palace, which shares a pool and splendid gardens with its modern wing, scented with orange trees and jasmine. Make the most of the palace’s atmosphere - the height of comfort and refinement. You should dine here, stroll through its lounges and gardens, and reflect on its terraces to experience the prestige of the place and the uninterrupted view of the Temple of Amun.
Optional extra - a visit to the Ramesseum with archaeologist Christian Leblanc.

After a private transfer, settle into your cabin aboard the Steam Ship Sudan. After lunch, your guide accompanies you to the Karnak complex, dedicated to the god Amun, protector of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom. Back on the boat, you begin sailing to Qena, north of Luxor. This part of the Nile, rarely visited by cruise boats, is beautiful and offers stunning views of the riverbanks - especially at sunset. Dinner is served on board.

Depart early for Abydos (about a 2-hour drive). The holy city - and the city of Osiris, ruler of the realm of the dead and god of resurrection - has also been a major pilgrimage site since the time of the Old Kingdom. The temple, dating from the time of Seti I, is a marvel, with its richly coloured bas-reliefs, the fine craftsmanship of which marks the birth of Ramesside art. On the way back, visit Dendera, the spectacular temple of Hathor, goddess of joy and love, protector of women and nurse of the pharaohs. Isolated on the edge of farmland and desert, the only remaining vestige of the ancient city of Dendera is particularly well preserved, with its richly decorated chapels, columns with cow-headed capitals, dark corridors and stairways, terraces, and a rooftop that offers splendid views over the Upper Egyptian countryside. Return to the boat for lunch, then depart for a wonderful afternoon sailing back to Luxor. Dinner is served on board.

The morning is dedicated to exploring the Theban necropolis, a land of mysteries and the domain of the god Osiris during the New Kingdom: the Valley of the Kings, where beautifully decorated tombs recount the journey of the deceased through the afterlife. You will visit the tomb of Ramses VI, among other sites. Next, head to the Valley of the Queens, the secret necropolis of royal wives, where you visit the tomb of Nefertari, wife of Ramses II. Finally, you stop at the Valley of the Nobles - the necropolis of officials, high dignitaries, and the wider court who were not of royal descent - and at the Valley of the Artisans, created to house the sculptors, painters, and stonecutters who worked on the necropoli. The day ends with a visit to Luxor Temple, the most elegant of the pharaonic monuments, built under Amenhotep III and later expanded by another great builder, Ramses II. You then return to the boat to continue sailing to Edfu, passing through the Esna lock on the way. Dinner is served on board.

Visit the Temple of Edfu, built from the 3rd century BCE onwards and dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god; his wife, Hathor, goddess of beauty and love; and their son, Harsomtus. This temple is one of the best preserved in the country. Return on board for lunch, as the boat resumes its journey to Kom Ombo. You will arrive at sunset. The Temple of Kom Ombo is unique in Egypt as it is dedicated to two deities: the falcon-headed god Horus and the crocodile-headed god Sobek. Dinner is served on board.

The final cruise is to Aswan, where the Nile Valley ends and Nubia begins. It was once the edge of civilisation. The afternoon is devoted to visiting the Philae Temple, domain of the goddess Isis, Universal Mother and magician who ruled over life, death and resurrection. Philae was one of the most important sanctuaries in Egypt and Nubia until 550, when the Byzantine emperor Justinian ordered its closure. After the tour, you have free time to explore Aswan. Dinner is served on board and the night spent at the quay.

In your itinerary - the Abu Simbel temples. Located 280 km (174 miles) from Aswan, in the heart of Nubia, the temples of Abu Simbel, built in honour of the great Pharaoh Ramses II, were carved into two sandstone hills facing the Nile. This grand complex glorified the power of the pharaoh over the southern peoples, over whom Egypt asserted its supremacy. A legendary site to explore in private, with a guide. The tour is followed by a Nubian lunch.
Upon returning from Abu Simbel, settle in for the night in the “Nile Wing”, the modern wing of the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract. Thanks to its renovation and the interior decor redesign by Sybille de Margerie, it offers rooms and suites with luxurious elegance, all overlooking the river and reflecting the colours of ancient Egypt.

A private transfer takes you to the airport and a domestic flight to Cairo, then the international flight home.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Cairo - Tour of the Institut français d'archéologie orientale (French Institute for Oriental Archaeology or IFAO)

The IFAO was founded in 1880 by Jules Ferry, giving Egypt the same importance as Rome and ancient Greece, both of which already had their own French School. Here you can explore both the history of Egypt and the history of French research and passions. With a private guide, first of all you take a tour of the Mounira Palace, which has been home to the Institute since 1907. Then you discover the phenomenal archaeology library and its precious volumes. Next you move on to modern equipment: the materials analysis and Carbon-14 dating laboratories. And finally, the publishing house. The very roots of Egyptology.

Tour of the Ramesseum with Christian Leblanc

The archaeologist has spent his life excavating this site. Ramesseum is the name given to the temple built by Ramses II between the desert and the village of Gournah, on the west bank of the Nile at Thebes. Although only a small part of the original monument remains today, it still exudes an extraordinary power. Some of the ruins remain, such as the pillars on the façade of the Hypostyle Hall, against which stand statues depicting the pharaoh as Osiris. Near these pillars lies the largest colossus ever erected in Egypt.

With a few more days, the Red Sea

For those lucky enough to spend more time in Egypt, you can continue your journey to the Red Sea. When you leave Luxor, you head to Hurghada. Here you will stay in a hotel by the sea. The rooms all feature marquetry, marble mosaics, delicate mashrabiyas and spacious cedar wood wardrobes. Middle Eastern craftsmanship at its most beautiful. The coral reef, brimming with life, is just in front of the sandy beach. Heading north, the two monasteries of Saint Paul and Saint Anthony immerse you in the history of Christianity and monasticism in Egypt. Some monks lived in caves in the desert, to live out their faith. Saint Paul, the monk who founded monasticism, is said to have lived there for 90 years. Saint Anthony did the same. In each monastery you will be welcomed by a monk, who will act as your guide and explain the site’s history.
