The Nile Valley trip with Voyageurs du Monde has recently been given a makeover. The cruise on board the Steam Ship Sudan, the oldest steam ship still sailing on the river, now lasts for six days. Embarkation and disembarkation in Luxor and Aswan - direction of travel depends on departure dates. In both cities, you will stay in legendary, timeless palaces that play an important role in the legend of the Nile. Between the two, you will embark on a majestic voyage imbued with calm and history, to discover the great legends of Ancient Egypt. The cruise includes Qena to visit the lesser-known Dendera and Abydos temples, a magical sunset over the monumental Karnak temple complex and sunrise over the Valley of the Kings, taking in the Esna lock, and the temples of Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae. A timeless journey, for an unforgettable insight into Egypt.

The Nile on board the Steam Ship Sudan

Built at the dawn of the 20th century for Thomas Cook and Sons, the Steam Ship Sudan is the last authentic steam ship still cruising on the Nile. It differs from other cruise ships because of its small size and the way the original atmosphere is combined with modern comfort. The two teak decks rise above a black hull that has been gliding through the waters of the sacred river for nearly a century, moving to the slow rhythm of its paddle wheels, while steam rises slowly and regularly from the ship's chimney. There are twenty-three cabins on board, including five suites, each named after a figure connected to the history of the boat or Egypt: Agatha Christie (who found inspiration for Death on the Nile on the ship), Mariette Pacha, King Farouk, Jean-François Champollion, Herodotus and Oum Kalsoum among others. Voyageurs du Monde oversees the quality of onboard services, such as dining (the Sudan is the first ship in the Nile Delta to be supplied with organic fruit, vegetables and eggs) and the recruitment of top-notch guides. If you want, you can have a private guide with you throughout the cruise. While sailing, you can read while taking in the scenery, lounge on the deckchairs on the upper deck, or learn something new in a fun hieroglyph or cookery class - must be booked with your travel specialist.

Your accommodation in Luxor - the Sofitel Winter Palace

On the banks of the Nile, near Luxor Temple, stands another historic monument, the Winter Palace. The opening of this grand hotel in 1886 marked the beginning of tourism in the region. While it’s been updated to suit the demands of today’s traveller, a Victorian atmosphere still lingers over the grand marble staircase and in the elegant, gentrified lounges. The bellboys in sarouels and tarboushes, and the Concierges in tailcoats add to the ambience. The hotel has a hundred or so rooms - spaces that feel more like museum pieces than modern. Just take a look at the photo gallery: the great and the good have all passed through. In the newer section, also known as the "Pavillon", the rooms are larger and more modern.
Insider tip - Head to the terrace overlooking the magnificent gardens at nightfall to fully appreciate the magic of the place

Your accommodation in Aswan - The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract

A legendary hotel if ever there was one. Most of the rooms in the historic wing have been transformed into suites. The "Elephantine" Wing (Nile Wing) - where you will stay - is all modern elegance. Topped off with a spacious spa with a swimming pool. While great travellers such as Agatha Christie, Winston Churchill and the iconic statesmen of the 20th century may have added to the aura of this place, the palace continues to uphold its traditions of hospitality and comfort, with the focus on understated elegance and peerless service. Behind its ochre walls, against the backdrop of the river and rocks, the legend lives on.
Dining options - Middle Eastern and gourmet cuisine at the 1902 Restaurant; an intimate atmosphere and all-day service at Al Saraya; Egyptian flavours at Oriental Kebabgy; a tropical, informal atmosphere by the pool at Palms; afternoon tea at the Terrace.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

International flight to Cairo, then flight to Luxor. Welcome on arrival, private transfer, and a night at the Sofitel Winter Palace. On site, there are three restaurants, including the famous “1886”, two swimming pools - indoor and outdoor - and a beautiful garden where you can relax under the flamboyant trees, listening to the songs of countless birds.
Things to do and experience - Enjoy afternoon tea or cool off with a karkadé, a hibiscus tea made from Hibiscus sabdariffa - Swim at the end of the day - At night, watch the sound and light show at Karnak Temple…
Optional extra - Take a hot air balloon flight over the Valley of the Kings.

After a private transfer, board the Steam Ship Sudan, then settle into your cabin, Lunch is served on board. In the afternoon, explore the East Bank of Luxor with a visit to the Karnak complex, one of the largest sacred sites in the world. It is home to the temple of the god Amun, built over the course of nearly two thousand years, from the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemaic period. Return to the boat and begin sailing towards Qena, north of Luxor. This stretch of the Nile, rarely visited by cruise boats, is magnificent. Before dinner, planned on board, you enjoy your first sunset.

Depart in the early morning for Abydos (2 hours by road). Abydos is a sacred city - the city of Osiris, ruler of the realm of the dead and god of resurrection - and, since the Old Kingdom, an exceptional place of pilgrimage. The temple, dating from the time of Seti I, is a marvel, with its richly coloured bas-reliefs, the fine craftsmanship of which marks the birth of Ramesside art. On the way back, visit the site of Dendera, the spectacular temple of Hathor, goddess of joy and love, protector of women and nurse of the pharaohs. Isolated at the edge of farmland and desert, the sole remaining vestige of the ancient city of Dendera is one of Egypt’s best-preserved great monuments. It features richly decorated chapels, columns with cow-headed capitals, dark corridors and stairways, terraces, and a rooftop with a splendid view over the Upper Egyptian countryside. Return to the boat for lunch, then depart for a wonderful afternoon sailing back to Luxor. Dinner is served on board.

The morning is devoted to exploring the Theban necropolis, a land of mysteries and the domain of the god Osiris during the New Kingdom: the Valley of the Kings, where beautifully decorated tombs recount the journey of the deceased through the afterlife. You visit the tomb of Ramses VI; the Valley of the Queens,/strong> the secret necropolis of royal wives, including a visit to the tomb of Nefertari, wife of Ramses II; the Valley of the Nobles, the burial place of officials, high dignitaries and members of the court who were not of royal blood; and finally, the Valley of the Artisans, created to house the sculptors, painters and stonecutters who worked on the necropolises. The day ends with a visit to Luxor Temple, the most elegant of the pharaonic monuments, built under Amenhotep III and later expanded by another great builder, Ramses II. You then return to the boat to continue your journey, passing through the Esna lock on the way to Edfu. Dinner is served on board.

In the morning, visit the Temple of Edfu, built from the 3rd century BCE onwards and dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god; his wife, Hathor, goddess of beauty and love; and their son, Harsomtus. This temple is one of the best preserved in Egypt. Then, you have lunch on board before sailing to Kom Ombo. In the evening, you visit Kom Ombo Temple, the originality of which is both architectural and religious. Unique in Egypt, it is dedicated to two deities, with two temples brought together in one place. The southern part was devoted to the falcon god Horus the Elder (Hera-Ur), and the northern part to the crocodile god Sobek. Dinner is served on board.

Sail towards Aswan, the gateway to Nubia. The cultivated banks give way to wide sandy shores. It was once the edge of the civilised world. As early as the third millennium BCE, a commercial exchange centre had developed on Elephantine Island. Nubia (“gold” in Nubian) was a rich land; it supplied Egypt not only with gold but also with soldiers, prized woods and precious ivory. In Aswan, visit the Temple of Philae, relocated in 1974 to Agilkia Island after Philae was submerged by the reservoir waters of the dam. This sanctuary was dedicated to Isis, the universal mother and magician, who presided over life, death and resurrection. Goddess worship continued there for a long time, until the Byzantine emperor Justinian transformed it into a Coptic church in the 6th century. Dinner is served on board.

Disembark after breakfast and enjoy a private transfer to the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract. You’ll settle for the night in the Nile Wing, the modern wing of the hotel. Originally, it was built to house Russian and Egyptian engineers during the construction of the Aswan Dam. Thanks to its renovation and the redesign of its interior decor by Sybille de Margerie, it now offers rooms and suites with a more contemporary, luxurious elegance. All of these face the river and feature the colours of ancient Egypt - shades of water green, turquoise and sand that echo the landscape’s hues.
Already planned - Afternoon tea at the Terrace, one of the hotel’s bars, with a selection of teas served with buns, and strawberries and cream.
Things to do and experience - Relax by the pool or enjoy a spa treatment; visit Elephantine Island, the centre of the cult of Khnum, master of the cataract, which is home to an impressive series of ancient ruins; explore the Nubian Museum, etc.
Optional extra - Visit the Abu Simbel temples.

A private transfer takes you to the airport, followed by a flight to Cairo and then the international flight home.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

The Theban Necropolis by hot-air balloon

Flying over the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens above the west bank of the Nile, in the peaceful glow of dawn, is an unforgettable and magical experience giving you a very special view of the region’s vast cultural treasures. Transfers, the flight (40 minutes) and a light snack before the flight are included.

The temples of Abu Simbel

300 km (186 miles) from Aswan, in the heart of Nubia, the temples of Abu Simbel, built in honour of the great Pharaoh Ramses II, were carved into two sandstone hills facing the Nile. Bathed in the golden light of the African sun, this magnificent complex symbolised the power of the pharaoh over the peoples of the south over whom Egypt asserted its supremacy. A legendary site to explore in the company of a private guide.

With a few more days, the Red Sea

For those lucky enough to spend more time in Egypt, you can continue your journey to the Red Sea. When you leave Luxor, you head to El Gouna. For your accommodation we have chosen an elegant beach house. The shades of blue - from the walls, the pool and the sky - blend together harmoniously making it the perfect place to relax. Heading north, the two monasteries of Saint Paul and Saint Anthony immerse you in the history of Christianity and monasticism in Egypt. Some monks lived in caves in the desert, to live out their faith. Saint Paul, the monk who founded monasticism, is said to have lived there for 90 years. Saint Anthony did the same. In each monastery you will be welcomed by a monk, who will act as your guide and explain the site’s history.
