Breathe in, breathe out – the whole experience feels like a breath of fresh air. Travelling in Norway means entering a world where water seeps everywhere, forcing the land to become narrow and beautiful to retain its place. Fjords with unfamiliar names, Geiranger, Sognefjord, Lillehammer, coastal roads, canyons and crystal-clear waterfalls, wooden-clad churches and deep lakes, mountains that stay green, forests that remain forests, nature that remains nature, and silence that is truly silent. From time to time, you may catch fleeting glimpses of elves with light straw-like hair, or spot their houses – colourful wooden boards or grass roofs.

Travel to Norway by region

Bergen & the Fjords

The second largest city in Norway, Bergen is also a major university and cultural centre. This former Hanseatic port, with its colourful houses and UNESCO World Heritage status, invites visitors to stroll around and relax. Your trip to Bergen will also be an opportunity to admire the magnificent fjord landscapes, for example from the summit of Mount Fløyen, accessible by funicular. Taking the Flåm panoramic train, following cycling routes, kayaking along the coast, or tasting freshly caught fish are just a few examples of the many activities awaiting you during your stay in the fjords.

Finnmark & the Arctic

In the far north of the country, Finnmark County forms the Norwegian part of Lapland. The north and west coasts offer a succession of bays, fjords and straits enclosed by islands and populated by colonies of seabirds, as well as spectacular mountains and glaciers. To the east, the spruce and pine forests stretch as far as the eye can see; this is the land of brown bears, lynx and moose. In the heart of the county, the Finnmarksvidda Plateau reveals its landscapes of lakes and valleys, where thousands of reindeer roam, owned by the Sami, the country’s oldest indigenous people. A stay in Norwegian Lapland resonates as an open-air adventure, with dog sledding safaris, snowshoe outings, and ice fishing. The white desert reveals the depths of its mystery at nightfall, under the dance of the Northern Lights. Discover all of our travel inspiration in Finnmark and the Norwegian Arctic.

Lofoten Islands

The name alone evokes a sense of escape and distant horizons: Lofoten. With its landscape carved by fjords, gentle and peaceful meadows where flocks of sheep have made their home, and fishing villages nestled in sheltered coves, the archipelago, set just outside the Arctic Circle and separated from the mainland by the Vestfjord, lives up to its promise. A trip to the Lofoten Islands is a must for anyone visiting Northern Norway.

Oslo & Southern Norway

Oslo nestles in the heart of a fjord, on the edge of vast pine and larch forests. This setting – sometimes urban, maritime or rural, delights travellers, who can linger here before the dizzying architecture of its skyscrapers, wander among the picturesque, colourful village houses, or hike through the forests of Nordmarka. Norwegians look to nature – and even more to their mountains. Any trip to Oslo deserves a detour to its surrounding resorts, which embrace snow in winter and greenery when summer arrives. Getaways perfectly suited to discovering a wild and laid-back Norway.

Spitsbergen

At the edge of Europe and the Far North, beyond even the Arctic Circle and the North Cape, Spitsbergen is the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago. A land full of mystery, once reserved for trappers and whalers, explorers and scientists, and inhabited by spectacular wildlife – polar bears, reindeer, seals and other birds. The far north of Arctic Norway is gradually opening up to a few select travellers, on foot or by kayak in midnight darkness, by snowmobile or dog sled in winter, before the ritual of a heady gløgg and a restorative sauna. Discover all of our travel inspiration for Spitzbergen.
