In the heart of the magnificent mountainous region of Bukittinggi lives the world’s oldest matriarchal society: the Minangkabau. Although they are Muslims, they entrust family authority to women. Among the Minangkabau, the birth of a girl is joyfully anticipated, unlike in other countries in this part of the world. The mother passes on only to her daughter her name, her possessions, her land, her titles, and of course her jewellery. As for the men, they live with their mothers, manage the daily life of the village… and pay “visits” to their wives.
