A bridge between laid-back Florida and the equally cool Californian coast, between the revitalised East and the legendary parks of the West, the American South spans a vast territory and states with unique personalities. A journey through the Southern United States may focus on the Eastern states, from the Carolinas to Georgia, a region that has remained discreet, at times preserving, at times innovating. Of course, there is Louisiana, with its musical New Orleans and its bayous. “Sweet Home Alabama”, or an immersion in Dixieland culture. And then there’s also Tennessee: Nashville, the mecca of country music, and Memphis, birthplace of rock ’n’ roll and an iconic centre of the civil rights movement. And then, the “deep South”: Texas, a symbol of untamed America, today in the midst of a vibrant arts revival. And New Mexico, deeply shaped by its Native American and Hispanic cultures, where art galleries and museums flourish among old missions and cave dwellings.
