Itinerary highlights

  • After a stopover in the Balinese countryside, explore Sumba, a little-known island with a rich cultural heritage and unique identity.
  • Marvel at the purity of Sumba’s landscapes: waterfalls, mangroves, savannah, beaches and lush hills.
  • Massage in Bali, walks and visits to ikat and ceramics workshops in Sumba, snorkelling on a coral reef: it’s all planned!
  • Carbon absorption, private drivers, Concierge service, Wi-Fi: the extra Voyageurs touch
When Bali's buzz becomes too much, Sumba beckons with open arms. To the east, this Sunda Island radiates tranquillity and a unique, vibrant energy. Miraculously preserved from tourism, it quietly unfolds its immaculate beaches bathed by idyllic waters, its unspoiled landscapes of tropical forest and hills and its villages with conical thatched roofs and façades adorned with buffalo skulls.. The sandalwood that has perfumed the island and warmed hearts for centuries has given its name to a small horse that gallops in herds across the island, at a safe distance from the crocodiles: the Sandalwood. You need to go Bali Bali to reach Sumba. An opportunity to see - or rediscover - the Island of the Gods at its best, its most authentic. For this, you will spend two days in the lush and peaceful region of Sidemen. Around the village, rice fields and flower meadows create a wonderful setting for walks. Head to the local market, step into artisans’ workshops, or enter a massage parlour. Indonesia offers a calm, elegant first impression. From there, head to Sumba, west of the island of Timor. You approach the island from the east, a wild region where tourism takes the form of simple accommodation nestled in the heart of breathtaking landscapes. It soon becomes clear that the Sumbanese have a distinctive identity, which they seem to weave into their ikats - very beautiful, world famous traditional textiles. Eastern Sumba’s pieces are especially refined, and the master weavers you meet there describe their craft better than anyone else. From waterfalls to valleys, from rice fields to remote villages, time seems to move at a different pace, and doors open with natural ease. One example is the picturesque Pasola festival, where riders from different villages face each other in a warrior ritual - now peaceful - armed with javelins and their traditional colourful ikats. They ride the famous Sandalwood horses decorated with flowers for the occasion. From there you briefly pass through the north of the island and the region Kambera. New walks lead to new waterfalls. Natural pools refresh hikers who are surprised - and delighted - to find savannah landscapes and kayaks for river trips right in the heart of the island. You will then head to the other side of the island. On the west coast, you see a completely different Sumba: a rugged shoreline with steep cliffs battered by the waves. There are also white sandy beaches, where a lucky handful of surfers ride the waves. Once again, your steps lead you to marvellous waterfalls as well as to the multicoloured tropical fish living in the coral reef. This is the kind of place where you could happily put down roots Combining practicality with pleasure, one last night in Bali allows you to experience a lets you experience a slice of local daily life in Jimbaran. Shop in the fish market, before savouring your deliciously cooked precious catch in a warung

Your trip

We wanted to make this journey seamless, despite the unavoidable flights taking you from Bali to Sumba. We have also made it easier for you to get around on both islands thanks to our private drivers. They take care of the logistics and the small country roads so you are free to contemplate and unwind. Everywhere, we have selected accommodation in harmony with their surroundings and the atmosphere of each place. However, it's worth remembering that much of Sumba remains undeveloped for tourism, so options are still limited and comforts can sometimes be quite basic. In Sidemen, your first stop in Bali, we have chosen typically Balinese-style accommodation that has the feel of a small village. In Sumba, you will stay in turn in a charming bamboo cottage facing a sublime beach where green turtles come to lay their eggs; in a hilltop refuge offering breathtaking views over the lush hills of the Waingapu region; and finally in a superb retreat set by the ocean, which also welcomes artists and chefs in residence. For your last night in Bali, you will stay in a small thatched-roof retreat, where you will dine right on the beach. Explore the area with locals who know their island inside out. With their guidance, you'll connect with the very soul of the two islands through walks and bike rides, meeting locals and artisans along the way. As a bonus, we've also added a delightful massage to your itinerarybefore your flight to Sumba. Then, at the end of your trip, you’ll enjoy a snorkelling excursion on the island’s west coast, where, where — surprisingly — surfing isn’t the only star attraction And for anything we couldn't plan ahead - minor setbacks or sudden whims - you can rely throughout your trip on the assistance of our o-site Concierge service.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Night on board, arrival the next day.

Upon arrival, French-speaking meet and greet at the airport and assistance with travel formalities. Transfer in a private vehicle to Sidemen where you will spend two nights. Stay in a small property comprising several small buildings with thatched roofs and featuring traditional Balinese architecture. The charming interior design is typical of the island. The pool overlooks lush, terraced rice fields with Mount Agung rising majestically in the distance.

The village of Sidemen provides an excellent starting point for scenic walks through rice fields or vegetable and flower plantations, depending on the season. The nicest walks take you along narrow paths running alongside the rice fields or following the course of the subak - traditional irrigation canals flowing downwards from the volcano. In the morning, why not visit the local market, the iconic yellow bridge of Tukad Yeh Unda, a traditional ceramics workshop or the studio of a local weaver who may even reveal the secret of the renowned Sidemen songket - a traditional fabricl known for its distinctive patterns and colours.
Option: A day exploring Sidemen with a local inhabitant.

Scheduled: There’s nothing like a massage to get the day off to a flying start. Next, visit a traditional house nestling between the river and rice fields. Experience a one-hour massage combining several Asian techniques and delivered by expert hands.
Transfer to Denpasar Airport for a short flight to Waingapu on the Island of Sumba. Drive to the north-east of the island. Stop off along the way to admire the magical sunset over Walakiri Beach and its mangroves
Then continue your journey and spend two nights in a charming bamboo cottage overlooking the sea. The nearby beach provides a haven for green turtles to lay their eggs in season. These natural surroundings are simply stunning. The spacious poolside bar, Bohemian style, is also made from bamboo and boasts an impressive roof. The interior design of the cottages showcases local arts and crafts. The cushions, for example, are covered with traditional “ikats” (dyed patterns) while baskets adorn the walls. What’s more, the bathroom products are scented with sandalwood, which grows on the island. Celebrate your arrival in Sumba with a glass of pec - a local spirit made from fermented palm sap.

Scheduled: Private day in eastern Sumba. After a hearty breakfast, set off to discover one of the natural gems of this part of Sumba: the stunning Waimarang waterfall. The scenery more than makes up for the steep terrain and challenging hike. Upon arrival, dive into the crystal-clear waters of the natural pool at the foot of the waterfall before settling down for a picnic. Then head to the village of Prayiawang to explore the megalithic tombs - imposing reminders of a glorious royal past.

Scheduled: A day in the centre of the island, private. Discover even more about the island’s natural beauty with each passing day. The first natural treasure along your route: Tanggedu waterfall where crystal-clear water flows freely from the cliff-top into tranquil natural pools below - perfect for cooling off after a short walk. Next explore the vast Puru Kambera savannah, where golden grasses ripple in the gentle breeze beneath a radiant sky, and admire the incredible views. As the day draws to a close, watch the sun set over the surrounding countryside from the Tanau Hills. The glowing rays of the setting sun tend to light up the sky. In the evening, change your port of call and spend the night near Waingapu. Don’t expect to find state-of-the-art equipment or international chains here. In actual fact, that’s not what people are looking for in this corner of the island. The rooms have only the bare essentials: a bed and air conditioning. But what a view! The building is constructed on stilts, high above sea level. The large windows in the bedrooms and some of the bathrooms have magnificent views of the rolling green hills. As the hotel is situated near a river, guests can explore the area by kayak. Regardless of the time of day, sink comfortably into a beanbag on the delightful wooden terrace and let your gaze drift towards the horizon. This location is too wonderful to make you think of home comforts!

Scheduled: Bike ride in the Kambera region. Cycle through this picturesque region of Sumba. The first scheduled stop is at an ikat workshop where you can chat with masters of the art. Watch the craftspeople at work and familiarise yourself with an age-old weaving technique renowned for its symbolic, colourful abstract, floral or geometric patterns. With the wind in your hair, continue your ride through rice fields and green valleys. Admire the contrast between rows of crops and wooded hills. Stop off en route for a chat with hamlet residents whose gentle way of life keeps pace with the changing seasons.
Transfer by private vehicle to the Kodi region in western Sumba for a four-night stay in a superb coastal retreat. Everything here is stunning, yet simplistic. The interior designers made liberal use of polished concrete, wood and other materials that are on-trend but still reflect the local surroundings and the area’s culture. The delightfully Bohemian atmosphere is in perfect harmony with the fresh, bright décor. The hotel has resident artists and chefs. On site, a farm carefully produces and prepares some of the ingredients that you will undoubtedly sample during your stay. The hotel puts this garden to good use to pass on growing and permaculture techniques. Or how to make the most of pleasing, useful combinations - comfort personified in an idyllic setting. Surfboards are an added bonus.

The Kodi region, to the west, is still very much a natural habitat where a few hamlets are linked by small dirt roads. The houses, which are mainly huts, seldom have running water or electricity. The coastline features idyllic sandy beaches and picture-perfect turquoise waters.
Scheduled: Snorkling off Kodi
. Just a few minutes’ drive from your hotel, and accessible by bike, there is a miraculously preserved coral reef - home to a vibrant underwater community. Equipped with mask and snorkel, discover an impressive range of tropical fish.

To see and do: - Sunbathe on Mandorak Beach, hire bikes at the hotel and cycle along the coast, go paddleboarding on Waikuri Lagoon or surf.
Optional: Walk through the tiered villages of western Sumba, private excursion.

Transfer by private vehicle to the airport for the flight to Denpasar. Transfer to Jimbaran and overnight stay in a charming hotel with hibiscus-lined tropical garden. The cottages echo pure Balinese style with large picture windows overlooking the garden or the ocean. The thatched roofs, high ceilings and exposed beams, carved teak wood furniture and doors, traditional silk and cotton bedding coupled with the asymmetrical terrazzo marble bathtubs all add to the incredible elegance of this particular venue. Dining is a truly romantic experience. Dine in the flickering glow of torchlights dotted along the beach, feet covered in sand, and listen to the waves lapping against the shore.

The Jimbaran fish market is not to be missed! Early in the morning, head to the fish market and try your hand at some bartering! Having purchased your catch of the day, simply head to one of the nearby warungs (stalls) where your fish will be cooked to your taste (spicy or plain). Sample your wares in an entirely local atmosphere.
Late afternoon, transfer by private vehicle to the airport for return international flight. Night on board, arrival the next day.
